Why do you do good?

I personally believe in God because I had an encounter with the Lord when I was 15. But not everyone has had the same experience and many do not believe God exists. So for those who do not believe in God, if there is no God, why do you do good? I heard a quote which I don't remember exactly but it goes something like this, "If there is no God than everything is permissible." If there's no God who draws the line between right and wrong? If there's no God, what's the point of life, we rose out of the slime, we live, we die, is it all meaningless to you? If there's no God than who are you to tell me I'm wrong for committing what you call a crime? If there is no God than I can govern myself and create my own laws, I am like my own god. But don't get me wrong, I have always been a nice peaceful person even before I met God. But my encounter with God changed everything, He gave me a greater purpose and hope for today and the future. So tell me? Why do you do good? I'll give one answer, I know people do good because it feels good and reaps good results. Like, you don't slap a random guy in the face because you just might get slapped the heck out lol---(you didn't know he was an MMA master.) But also people do good because their conscience tells them it's the right thing to do. But seriously, with all due respect, why do you do good?
If there's no God, what's the point of life, we rose out of the slime, we live, we die, is it all meaningless to you?
Not if I can help it.
If there's no God than who are you to tell me I'm wrong for committing what you call a crime?
A sensible human being with a natural disposition towards right and wrong.
If there is no God than I can govern myself and create my own laws, I am like my own god.
Yes.
But don't get me wrong, I have always been a nice peaceful person even before I met God.
I am glad to see that you can disprove your own world view as being universally applicable.
Common sense. It all comes down to common sense and a sense of right and wrong. If it seems like its wrong, there's a good chance that it is. Quite frankly, life is mostly meaningless to me, but let's not get onto that. Yes, you could govern yourself and create your own little country from a slice of land. However, that is a stupid idea. Also, its nice to know you can so easily contradict your examples of what you could do.

      • 1) Biochemical reactions in your brain make you feel good, not God. 2) We do good things because we are nice people, and we can't do whatever we want because we have laws that we have to follow.

            • Well, there's the innate sense of direct reciprocity and altruism that I believe results from evolution, and the frontal lobe of the brain, but I think that having faith in some order, a God, or some good cause is essential to a strong moral compass.

                • Because I am a human being and I inherently know the difference between right and wrong I don't need a wizard in the sky telling me not to kill someone. (Which he did condone and encourage and participate in, Yahweh that is.)

                • Morality is not an objective trait outside of "x species thinks this way." It has not been shown to have a universal law stating something like "Killing's bad, mkay." I do good things because frankly I want the species to be better off than when I got here. That want/drive is nearly axiomatic due to instinct. If you want to do something, you are not then set on an objective scale regarding its "good/badness". If you're on a scale at all, it's on the opinions of those around you, and your own. Each person sets their own boundaries, whether or not they use religion to do so is up to them. I'm not sure I'd call you your own god when setting it yourself, but you'd certainly be more... independent?

As much as I possibly can. Not so much because I want to be a "good" person or whatever. But mostly because I have a conscience that literally haunts me if I do something I know is wrong. I'll think about it constantly until I make it right. So it's just easier for me to be good. But man, I've missed out on some opportunities because of it.

                  • You need to read the bible or whatever holy text you follow and examine the morality in it.

                      • Morality is NOT derived from religion. This is why we do good

I have no desire to stand out, therefore I act polite and proper towards others. Kindness and simplicity allow me to blend in, get around easier, and do things without being noticed, because ordinarily nobody has any reason to pay me any mind. I like having that ability, that freedom from suspicion. If I went around acting a fool and doing improper things, i'd always be watched, there would always be suspicion around me, i'd always have some sort of attention directed toward me, and I have absolutely no desire for that. After re-reading that, i'd honestly i'd say i'm morally neutral, I just do what makes a given situation easiest for me.
