How's it different from any other start screen?
There are no other modes in destiny and character selecting is the only other screen besides play so it really doesn't waste any time.

If it went straight to the character selection screen then there would be no waste of time. Introducing another step prior to that is a waste of time. IMHO.

Well yeah but you'd still have to load all the over head that happens after pressing the x. So it maybe saves a few seconds at most a minute if you're sitting there when everything starts up and didn't walk away. And the "do you really want to" feature, is common practice in all things computer related.
