Yesterday I tried to do the Eris bounty ‘kill 10 majors/ultras during nightfall’ and I thought that with me being a level 30, that my maxed out arc sniper (300dmg) would cut through them like a knife through butter.
Which was clearly not the case!
I switched to Murmur and that worked a bit better but also took me some time to take them down.
Is this because the enemies are the same level as I am? I really thought with the elemental burn things would go smoother.

1 Reply***IMPORTANT*** Know that whatever burn is present on the Nightfall has effect over everything including yourself. If the burn is arc, fallen and hive enemies that use arc weapons will be able to kill you just as easily

4 RepliesThe elemental will burn through the enemies but not their shields.. Each enemies shield is a different element, (I can't remember which enemy will take affect from which element.) but you take their shields down with say solar (for wizards shields.) and then hitting the enemy with arc will burn through like butter..

1 ReplyThe problem you're running into is the elemental shields versus the burn damage. In my opinion you're better off using a matching elemental weapon against a shield than you are trying to rely upon the burn modifier during the nightfall. So bring a solar damage weapon with you to take care of the wizards (VoC is my go-to) and arc-damage weapons for everything else.

1 ReplyBurn+proper elemental shield=hot knife through butter So icebreaker/black hammer/gjallerhorn against a solar shield enemy like a shank or a wizard will get toasted Truth/atheon epilogue against praetorians/minotaurs will go boom Fatebringer/patience and time will fry knights/captains When damaging the "not same" elemental shield with an element weapon, the damage is reduced until the shield breaks. Gjallerhorn with solar damage will break and destroy anything, IB/BH may have a little trouble but will push through. Rocket launchers with the correct burn tend to break and kill shielded targets with 2 shots

1 ReplyPre - patch...(i cant remember which one) - you would be correct - the game used to be set so that depending on the number of players in a strike determines the difficulty/weapon damage - Meaning - If i ran a nightfall alone i would do full damage to them and if using a burn, pretty much drop them in 1 or 2 shots - If you add a player, more enemies spawn and they become a little harder to kill, same thing again with the 3rd guardian entering Now bungie wants us to socialize and group up so they made all the strikes and nightfalls basically assume there are 3 players, so it is always going to take more shots to take them down - And I saw all this first hand - a few weeks ago when it was the summoning pits nightfall - i was just about to shoot the last knight to end phase 2 of the 3 phase door (the first darkness zone u come to) when my friend joined my open game - While still on phase 2 more of each enemy spawned and they definitely took alot more shots to take down - Same thing happened again when the 3rd entered So TL;DR - It used to be you could solo a nightfall and drop them with a burn easily, now after patch, it is better to have 3 people shooting

1 Replyin nightfall the shield are very dmg specific. it will take a while to cut through a solar shield with arc dmg in the nf
-
1 Replyvoc for wizards, mumur set to arc and thunderlord for everything else, or second loadout, fatebringer for arc, ice and hezen to devestate anything solar
-
1 ReplyUse vision of confluence to drop the Wizards shield, then it's 1 maybe 2 shots with a sniper and he's done.

1 ReplyBurn does 300% damage. +200% to your existing damage. Fate bringer can do 1500 crit. Increased to 4500.

2 RepliesEdited by Machiavoriel: 12/18/2014 4:54:12 PMNightfall and Burns are always an interesting juggling act because of the nature of shield 'type' and resistances. For example, you could have a hugely damaging Arc rifle, with arc burn on (so 4 x the damage etc.) but if they have a fire (orangey/red) shield, or a void (purpley) shield then their shield resistances will outweigh any bonuses you get to damage. For example (using inaccurate numbers for easy maths) Arc Burn gives you + 400% Damage - So if you hit originally for 100, you would now hot for 400 (on un-shielded mobs) Shield resists reduce non relevant damage by 90% - So this 5400 damage becomes 40 (!!!) So, even with the Arc Burn on (for example) shooting it at the 'wrong' type of shields will take a long time. My advice is to remember/look up/ask what mob types are *in* an instance, and take weapons according to that. For example; for Summoning Pits i know that, regardless of Burn, i need Arc for the shields on the Knights, and Fire/Solar for the shields on the wizards - So at the very least (and ignoring Elemental primaries which i know not everyone has) i would at the very least take a special (anything but shotgun lol) and a Heavy with the relevant elemental damage (i.e. Solar Ice Breaker and Arc Jolders Hammer) The new Murmur Fusion Rifle is amazing for this very reason, because it can hot-swap between Fire and Arc damage as and when you need it - so you arguably only then need a Void FR for when that comes up :) I hope this helps!

14 RepliesThe eris bounty only requires one kill of an ultra in nightfall not 10!

1 ReplyAll about the shields man. Gotta keep more than just the burn type on you to properly pop them.
-
2 RepliesThe elemental burn just means that that specific element will deal more damage, but that doesnt affect shields as much. If a wizard has a void shield, arc burn will bring it down a bit faster this week, but still, wont be as good as firing a void weapon at them. just keep variety in your arsenal. In that same example, the best way to do it would be, bring down his shield with a void weapon, and once the shield is down, fire away with an arc weapon.
-
8 RepliesHigher the level higher the shields are. If you don't match elements to take out shields, the elemental burn does little to help.
-
1 ReplyWhen shooting any enemy with a health shield, if it says 'resist' then you're using the wrong elemental damage. When you're using the correct one you will get numbers in the colour of the element. E.g. Shooting a shielded wizard with a solar sniper will display '1000' in red. Shooting one with an arc sniper will display 'resist' (but will still slowly take down shield)
-
3 RepliesIn nightfall the shields resistance to certain elements is increased dramatically. Wizards for example resist arc. Even with the arc burn you will deal little damage to their shields.
-
2 RepliesYou still have elements man. Drop the wizard shield with something fire elemental, then hit them with the arc. Or you should just target the Knights. Two good hits from arc murmur was working quite nicely. When I soloed the nightfall on Tuesday I used two gjallahorn rockets on the wizards. Murmur and VoC works on pretty much on everything else.

3 RepliesEdited by Sovereign Man: 12/18/2014 4:01:48 PMThe shields are your issue. The elemental burn, if used correctly, makes the strike far, far easier, but we aren't talking about your Guardian being God himself, walking through every enemy just because you have the right element on your weapon. You still have to take your time and be careful.
-
1 ReplyIf the shield isn't the same element as the burn, I find the burn only applies after their shields are down. I did the nightfall and wizards died faster if I broke their shield with icebreaker before my friend sniped them with an arc sniper.
-
1 ReplyFrom what I've gathered through experience, the shields still react more to their respective type rather than the burn. So if you're doing a nightfall/weekly that has a certain burn element, be sure to bring other weapons that are good against certain types of shields (in this case a solar weapon works quite well on the wizards).

1 Reply2-3 shots on wizards with solar to bring down their solar shield then finish them off with an arc weapon..
