Nope. the gun takes up a primary weapon slot just like any primary weapon. The weapon gains experience just like any other weapon, but instead of just gaining perks or more damage, it upgrades to a higher level weapon (legendary then exotic).

i know. i was just saying, in general, that it gains experience through kills and not through a mission or quest.
