Kotaku's main argument is ether a Lie or the result of complete ignorance.

this quote from the article is what everybody keeps throwing around.
"The system actually punishes players proportionately to their dedication to the game, and it's the stupidest thing I've ever seen a major game developer do to its community."
Here is the problem. WoW does this every time a new raid is introduced to the game. Not every expansion, EVERY 5 MONTHS WHEN A NEW CONTENT PATCH COMES OUT. literally every raid that is introduced they need to get new gear and weapons. if this Kotaku guy doesn't known this ( i do and i don't even play WoW) then i don't want see what he thinks about games because obviously he doesn't play to many outside of maybe CoD and Madden.

  • Gaming is pointless. Soon as you figure this out you will enjoy gaming more. Wow was one of the first games to introduce mainstream grinding and progression. This was crack to some people because you were actually building a persistent character and your time was manifesting in something. This ultimately doomed us all. Gaming no longer was just about having a good time but now became projects like electronic woodworking. If only we could go back to older games where we just played to play we would have so much more fun. Destiny has that concept to it, but people just want to be rewarded for absolutely everything *acheivements*. How about this week you play the raid, strikes, crucible, missions with the mindset of having a good time, setting your own achievements- make your own short term goals and relish your own accomplishments. I didn't get much from crota but i had a good time getting through the raid. I play roc striked even when my vanguard marks are maxed. Strikes are just fun. My melee build is super fun. I love getting close to Minotaurs, dodging their lunges and answering with my own, accompanied by my shotgun. Did i get an exotic shotgun for being a melee boss? No. Do I feel bad about that? No. Do I care that my last raid gear didn't entitle me to enhanced strength? NO. Just play the game. Plaaaay it. It plays amazingly.

Destiny wouldn't make a pimple on WoW's behind. Bungie has taken every good idea from every leveling system of every decent RPG ever made and completely ignored them, came up with their very own system and their system sucks so bad they have to try to fix it every 30 minutes. Unfortunately, instead of referring to all those good ideas from other games they've ignored, they just invent something else that's even dumber than their last idea.

      • I think you are the ignorant one here OP. The rest of the article explains why in Destiny the fundamental system for leveling is flawed and why being a "hardcore" player is punishing BECAUSE the gear-treadmill actually lowers their levels gained when they have to reupgrade new gear.

        • His point was your level isn't determined by gear like it is here. When you get new gear you go down levels ect.

          • I love that the only defense of these mechanics is, "Well, WOW does it this way..." I've yet to see an actual, logical, defensible argument for why these various resets of sorts make sense for anybody that plays this game. I'll be waiting.

          • In Destiny you have to relevel your weapons or get new ones. Weapons in Destiny makes your playstyle. In WoW abilities makes your playstyle. Destiny and WoW are different in the sense that Destiny makes you change your playstyle per expansion and WoW lets you keep it.

          • Dude it has nothing to do with getting new weapons. the article states (which you left out) that the more dedicated players who strived to max out all of their exotics end up getting screwed more because they now need to reforge and totally reupgrade all of those weapons again, or they are useless. They took away progress a player already had. It has nothing to do with replacing obsolete gear. So to me his statement looks pretty correct: The more effort you gave to grind out and max your exotics = the more progress you are losing by having to reupgrade each exotic. That's how proportionality works...trust me, I'm an Engineer

Kotaku is wrong end of story. Like other blogs/"gaming sites", they review Dark Below, did not get to 32 or step foot in the raid and they complained about how they are excluded, then they trash the system b/c they can't get to 32. Well guess what, gotta play the game morons. edit: I just ran by their article again, I can actually debunk the ENTIRE thing but since SO MANY people are defending Kotaku here (as well as Polygon) there's no point for me to even post such a thing. Most of you would not likely understand it either.

See the difference is that those large mmo games didn't remove the lower level armor and provide progression jumps like this game does. In expansions like wow they also make new worlds, new vendors, and higher level areas to go along with the higher level requirements. The thing is this game just has the tower and the vendor equipment alone made most of the legendary and exotic gear obsolete. And of course this all happens in the same playable area. In context that's what they are getting at with the quote. People are not required to go through the same progression gates therefore making the high level armor and weapons gained before trivial. This will continue to happen unless destiny expands its world and makes higher level vendors at different locations. Have the tower be the "starter area." It would contain the original vanguard gear and weapons. Then in a dlc like TDB they could make something like "the guardian outpost" on the moon selling the higher level gear. To avoid trivializing progression they just create a min level requirement to equip the gear. That would be more like traditional MMOs

                • Kotaku guy is just totally wrong and whiney in that article. I prefer using my VOG scout rifle so far in the Crota final encounter and the VOG boots with the bonus heavy ammo. Both are really good and a big reason why we downed Crota twice last week. Not to mention Bungie actually did something that other companies don't do, which is give us the option to upgrade our exotics through Xur. Seriously that author is being a whiny brat in his article.

There are two differences between what Bungie is doing and what wow does. First of all its not that there is a new tier of gear, it's that the next tier of gear is just bought from a vendor. You are supposed to earn gear to work towards the next raid. You don't need top tier gear to go shopping at a vendor. The second is how aggressive it is. They had an iron banner event, that people had to work hard on in a timed event, and then they immediately made it obsolete.

                    • And we won't have to worry about it for at least a year, when the second expansion comes out. I literally got patience and time 2.0 from the first raid chest today, so I'm okay with the update.

I don't mind re upgrading my weapons. What I do think is dumb is that I need Radiant materials and only radiant materials to upgrade new vault gear, and the only place to get those is the new raid. That is beyond Bungie being dum dums. At least implement a trading system from ascendant to radiant, not radiant shards for radiant energy and vise versa.

                      • The problem is that when wow does a content patch it truly feels like you're moving on to a new adventure. New zones, new dungeons, new raids. Also vendors don't completely replace hard mode raid gear from the previous content patch. When there is an actual expansion they rase the base level cap and add whole new zones filled with quests and npcs. New raids, new dungeons new pvp maps and more. Destiny gave us 2 story missions and a raid. To compare the two just does more to make destiny look bad.
