Bungie on why we can't skip cutscenes - Game Informer

This month's Game Informer has a feature on the Dark Below. They interview a few people at Bungie about some of our criticism and the question came up about skipping cutscenes in the game. This is what they had to say: "In a connected world where the computing is distributed it's actually an interesting challenge. How do you actually skip it? Is it a vote system where everybody in the party votes, or is it the fireteam leader? And how is that networked? How do you spawn everybody afterward, and how does the world reinstate itself? And it's just not simple, unfortunately. That's not an excuse - that's just a reality that this is actually kind of complicated. We are definitely looking at it and it definitely sits in the priority bucket, against a bunch of other really important stuff. We're not taking a philosophical stand against it, we're just working on all the things we want to work on." - Ryan Ellis, technical art director Honestly sounds like a bucket of BS to me. Other games don't have issues doing it so it's obviously not that complicated. I can play Halo and watch a terminal while my teammate backs out of it or decides not to watch it and there are many other games where its implemented.

  • Complicated? That's funny, Bungie. Plenty of other games have gotten it right and it works. Not to mention what about when someone's playing alone? They sure as hell want to skip. God, I can make a full three course meal in the time it takes the Speaker to prattle on about the shItty traveler.

  • I've played a ton of games where parties of people could skip a cutscene. Like freedom wars in the beginning of a battle cutscene if one person presses skip then it skips for everyone. It's simple. Wow bungie, trying to make it seem complicated for the sake of being -blam!-ing lazy as shit. Nice.

  • Ffxiv has skippable cut scenes in raids etc, not even remotely difficult to do. This excuse from bungie is bizarre, it's as if they don't realise that we know other games exist lol.

    • Except the big last one, I don't mind the cut scenes. It's nice seeing my badass dude and how far he has come in the cinematic's. Compared to the rust bucket I was when I started lol

    • RE 6, Dark Souls series are some of the recent games I played where you can skip cutscenes while an online friend is with you. As others have said, I don't know why Bungie has trouble with skipping scenes.

    • Other online games simply either have a vote to skip mechanic or let people skip immediately. Those who choose to skip move on and play, those who don't, can stay in the cutscene and catch up to the others when it is over. Simple. Of course there were people who complained that others didn't wait for them but there was usually somewhere in town where you can sit and re-watch all the cutscenes you've been through at your own leisure so nobody cared. These problems have already been figured out years ago by other companies. Don't know why Bungie acts like they are the first to encounter things like this.

    • I love this game but how hard is it to put in a mechanism to skip a cutscene?
