Too many. I think it's better to have less but allow for more customization so that you still have freedom without -blam!-ing over your head trying to figure out the difference between a shaman and a druid

  • Alright, so me toying around with the Shaman and Druid hybrid came out... Well, game breaking. There's only 2 specialization trees (one being called Spiritual, and the other is Druidic). The Druidic tree consists of Totems and Elemental attacks (also crosses over and grabs some innates from Spiritual). The Spiritual tree is... Interesting. You pick a spirit animal, and all of your abilities reflect your animal. As a spiritual user, you don't use weapons, but your fists and body are augmented by the spirit animal of your choice, making you either a Beefy DPS, or an untouchable Tank. This tree grabs some elemental buffs from the Druidic tree so you can have some more DPS through your fists.

  • Nice. A long time ago I converted version 3 over to a star wars type game and messed around with that for awhile. It was fun but it was pretty rough since I was younger.

  • Cool, are you basing it off version 4 or 5?

  • Lol, actually the book i had was 2. It's old, but it has enough for me to spring off of. I'm really just using the names of the stats from the book, I don't have much use for anything else in it.

  • Wow, that is old. I've never played with version 2 but I one thing I know that they improved from 3 to 4 to consolidating the skills. It's far more player friendly when you don't have to worry about a move silently check and a hide check, all you have to use is stealth. Or a climb, jump, swim, etc in 4 it was all just athletics which was very nice.

  • I've heard 3 and 4 were leagues better; but I discovered this game called Dungeon Worlds that I'm gonna mimic in terms of the overall combat/ social system. Basically, you take 2d6, roll, and add your modifier in amy said stat to see if you fail (2-6), succeed with a penalty (7-9), succeed (10-11), or crit (12). This modifier is static, and is used for everything from dodging, to attacking, to casting a spell, to talking to someone. We're using the stats from D&D and just giving certain numbers a bonus to your roll when it comes time to roll a check. My favorite part about this system though is that the DM NEVER HAS TO ROLL, since he just reacts to the players roll and either strikes, or makes an adjustment to the surrounding area.

  • To me, I think of the Shaman as a support player who drops different totems everywhere and used elemental magic. To me, a Druid is someone who shape shifts into animals and has some control over plants and pheromones. It shouldn't be that hard to make them different to be honest.

That's fine. But I think you should have one class with multiple skill trees so that you can do one or the other or even a little of both. If you think about real life (by real life I mean real life plus magic) a magic user that specializes in natural magic might have received multiple forms of training enabling him or her to shape shift and use totem magic. Indians believed/believe in both totem magic and animal shape siding, they also believe in spirit possession and other naturalistic magic. And when I said it was hard to figure out the difference I was exaggerating to get my point across.

  • Ah okay... That hybrid sounds pretty powerful too; drop some damage totems and morph into a bear- you're good to go. I'll work on combining the two and just calling it a Shaman (historically, a Shaman is just a Druid without standing in the world; a Druid is deemed as a high political figure). As far as spirits go, I've been working on a specialization that uses these nature spirits to aid his attacks; but i want the character to be Unarmed in nature. This leads me to almost want to make him a monk of sorts.
