I feel the vog weapons needs to be updated to match all the newer guns in January when the crota guns are released. Exotics obtained from vog, however, i feel should be upgraded to the newer exotics in the next hot fix. There have been reports that vog gear/weapons/exotics from checkpoints and/or raid chest have not been updated.
