Enhanced controls with fast weapon, special, and grenade swap

Dear Bungie, I have two control schemes in mind to enable the "hot-swapping" of weapons and abilities. The first utilizes the PS4 touch pad, as that is the platform I use, and therefore is only applicable to PS4. However, second I'll include thoughts on Xbox One/360/PS3 controls as a whole (which could also be used on ps4 since buttons are basically the same across all 4 platforms...). Here goes. I often times find myself wanting to quickly swap primary, secondary, or heavy weapons. For instance, I'm void-sniping a minotaur from mid-long range, but then he comes teleporting towards me and I want to pull out a shotgun...no can do. Or, I want different weapons depending on the crucible map, and hate going in and out of the inventory screen all the time. I may be the only one that wants this, but I'm guessing not. I therefore propose the following: Imagine, if you will, your guardians gear screen. You have your equipped weapon slot, then open inventory slots to the left in a 3x3 grid. When you equip an item, it simply swaps places with the active item, retaining the weapon's "place in line" in your inventory. Obtaining or dismantling items always "stacks" your items right-to-left, top-to-bottom. We all know how this works. Now, imagine the top 3 slots for each weapon inventory is your "hot-swap" area, which sits ever-so-slightly above your remaining 2 rows (6 slots) of inventory (No Bungie, I'm not asking to carry more). Now imagine you have a void sniper equipped in your special weapon slot and in the bottom 2 rows of your special weapon inventory you have 2 shotguns, 2 snipers, and 2 fusion rifles. Now you're going out to do the second mission of the Dark Below, and plan on taking down a rough wizard inside Rasputin with an arc shield, but are fighting other wizards with fire shields. All the wizards you want to hit from mid-long range, and maybe you want a shotgun for those ads. So you go into your inventory and press "X" to equip an arc sniper rifle. The void sniper you were carrying doesn't drop back into your inventory, but instead "slides" one box to the left and your arc sniper becomes the "active equipped" item, while the void sniper sits in your "hot-swap" list. Next, maybe you'd like a solar fusion rifle for the lesser-wizards, so you go a head and equip that, sliding out the arc sniper one box to the left to your hot-swap area, which in turn pushes your void sniper one more box left. Now you want a shotgun, so you equip one of those, pushing the fusion rifle to the left, pushing the arc sniper, pushing the void sniper...you get the idea.. like your inventory: items stack right. Now you're carrying the shotgun and have a solar fusion rifle and 2 sniper rifles available to hot swap. You decide you don't really want that void sniper rifle in there to clutter up your equipped items, so you could either A) equip another weapon and "push" it back into your inventory since it was the left-most weapon in the hot-swap row... or B) just remove it by clicking "X" on it, which would dump it back into your inventory area. Let's assume for this example we just remove it, leaving a shotgun equipped and fusion rifle & sniper available to swap. So, that's the setup for each weapon slot for hot-swapping of items. Now, assuming the ammo penalty is still active for hot-swapping guns (maybe to a lesser extent?), here are the controls to swap: If you're carrying that shotgun you equipped (special weapon), simple "click" the touchpad anywhere, and your "hot-swap" bar would appear with the icons (with damage type indicator please) of the items you have available in that top "hot-swap" row of you're inventory (the sniper and fusion rifle). Now, "clicking" either the right or left side of the touch pad will cycle through the weapons (left or right, obviously), and pausing on one will equip it "pushing" your shotgun into the hot-swap bar. Take this concept and use it for primary and Heavy weapons as well, utilizing the same methodology to swap weapons based on what you're currently holding. So, if I have a rocket launcher equipped (and holding it on screen) and I want to hot-swap to a machine gun, I can do that. Or, if I'm using Red Death and want to swap to Vision of Confluence, I can do that. Other caveats: -Stopping on your currently equipped weapon, nothing happens and there is no ammo penalty (you didn't swap). -If you pull the trigger to fire the weapon, it cancels out and nothing happens and there is no ammo penalty. -If you switch weapon type (secondary to primary), nothing happens for the weapon you brought up the hot-swap for, but the hot-swap remains up for the now-selected item (so instead of secondary weapons, it would show primary). - You can still only have 1 legendary. If you have a legendary already equipped and you have one in your hot-swap, the icon is greyed out (much like it is in the inventory now) and it is skipped when cycling through. Now, in the title I mentioned hot-swapping grenades and specials. Enter the touch-pad swipe. Say you're a hunter and you want to switch from run-and-golden-gun to blademaster-of-shadows. Simply "Swipe" the touchpad left or right (at this point there is only 2 options...but that 3rd is coming... I can smell it Bungie). This will bring up a similar hot-swap bar with the special's icon. Then, simply "click" the touchpad to confirm your swap and voila! Note: your grenade, melee, and super cool-downs would still reset. If you use your special or do not click to confirm (as opposed to weapon swapping where you just pause on the weapon to equip it) for a second or two, the hot-swap prompt goes away and it's back to business as usual. Grenades? "Swipe" the touchpad up or down to cycle through your current special's grenade types (maybe this could be shown as a vertical bar above the current grenade icon/refresh indicator). Like the special swapping, "Click" to confirm the selection and your grenade cool-down resets. If you don't confirm after a second or 2, or throw a grenade, it just cancels out and goes away. What about bringing up ghost for missions and the like, which is what the touch pad is used for now? I'm not sure. Maybe pushing the "Options" button takes you to your inventory like it does now, but a "push/hold" would bring up ghost? Or maybe re-map the D-pad for other purposes... Good Segway! On to option number 2 and how to make this work for Xboxes and ps3, or simply as a universal scheme for all platforms straying away from the touchpad option I just described. Assuming the same setup and caveats, the controls could be as follows: Much like the Vita, the D-Pad could be re-mapped for alternate purposes instead of 4 social options. D-Up + (X, O, □, ▲) could be social actions, like it is remote play for the vita (vita uses d-left + ? for social, but same idea). Bungie! You could even extend this out to include more social actions! (D-Up+ R1, R2, L1, L2, etc...) This frees up 3 D-buttons for other uses! Such as: D-Left/Right = cycle hot-swap for active weapon Hold D-Down, then press (□, O) to hot-swap specials left & right, respectively, then let go of D-down to confirm Hold D-Down, then press (X, ▲) to hot-swap grenades down & up, respectively, then let go of D-down to confirm O yea, the ghost on ps4 if using the touch pad for hot-swap: just press D-down (no hold) If nothing else, this would make changing gear for specific crucible maps SOOO much easier. Just a thought I guess! Do as you will.
