What exactly is a scrub?

I'm seriously asking this. I see this term thrown around on videogame internet forums all the time and it usually comes with the connotation of someone who thinks they are better than someone else. Regarding Destiny, it seems scrubs are people who suck at the game, have a low K/D ratio in PvP, have gotten exotic items from Xûr, are only level 29, are level 30 but have Iron Banner armor, etc. So what the hell exactly is the definition of a scrub? I guess I could just Google it, but I'm interested in seeing what the community here has to say. It seems like there is a general trend that the gaming community, at least those who post online, are horrible people who treat others with no respect at all. Hence, they throw the term "scrub" around as an insult when referring to someone who they view is below them. The funny thing is, this kind of spoiled brat, elitist, dick-measuring behavior seems to be mostly confined to the context of posting on forums. In my experience, when I actually engage with a fellow gamer online in a game, people are generally nice. But as soon as they get behind a keyboard and the protection of anonymity, there's a huge switch and it brings out the worst in people. All of a sudden, everyone else is scrub. I'm not really offended by it, actually I think it's pretty entertaining watching how horrible people can be behind the keyboard. But I am kinda curious as to why it happens, and why people are so mean and call each other scrub. What exactly does the word "scrub" mean to you, and why do you call people that?
