How high level do I need to be to play Crucible?

Hi, I just played my first few Crucible matches over the last two days, and I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed. Is there a minimum level to have any level of competitiveness in the Crucible? I mean, I know I'm a noob, but when I empty my gun into the back of a level 29 point blank, and he then turns around and one-shots me, it makes me think that maybe it's just not worth playing without gearing up first. Also, probably a stupid question, how do I tell what team somebody is on? Since we aren't color coded, I'm having trouble immediately identifying whether someone is an enemy when they suddenly pop around a corner. Right now, I'm going with the "Do they shoot at me?" method, but that means I tend to lose the quickdraw contest. Thanks!

  • Sounds like the level 29 is lagging, or you need to aim for the head more. There are plenty of high level players who don't even realise that they are surviving on a lag crutch. I don't know what you mean by "not colour coded" though.... The guys with the red names are the enemies. The guys with green names are your fireteam. The guys with the blue names are your non fireteam squad mates. Also, you should know exactly who is around you at all times by your radar. Seriously, radar is all important. I felt out of my depth until a friend reminded me to keep an eye on my radar. Learn to love that radar. Also, don't be afraid to get pounded for a while until you learn your war around the maps and get the feel for things like grenade mechanics and angles of approach. Who cares what your overall stats are? What matters is fun and game by game performance.

It just depends on your knowledge and understanding of crucible. Finding your own play style is a massive element in PVP. Sitting back and holding zones, pushing enemy zones or just rush and kill... Plenty of others. Level doesn't mean a lot and better guns make it easier but it comes down to you at the end if the day. Don't give in, you'll find what technique suits you best and then heads will roll

  • LEVEL Doesn't really matter, but what does is fully unlocking your class abilities and taking advantage of them. WEAPONS Matter way more than level, more than almost anything. There are a handful of good blues you can use early in the game before you get good legendaries and exotics. Watch your drops for: Shingen E auto rifle, Black Chasma ESC shotgun, Helios FR5 fusion, Dammerang fusion rifle, and any rocket launcher with proximity detonation. If you're still on greens look for a Cydonia auto rifle. ABILITY COOLDOWNS Pick two cooldowns that work for your class and play style and try to max them as much as possible, i.e. super/intelligence, grenades/discipline, melee/strength. TEAM SPOTTING Yep, its stupid. Whoever thought it was a good idea to spot members of the red team by looking for blue markers has some logic issues. Its a bitch, and you just have to get used to looking for people with no marker over their heads. Your team always has a blue marker over them, while enemies have none until you shoot them, after which you'll see a red marker.

  • You can play at any level. You might wanna wait to gather up some better weapons and unlock more perks on your subclass though. At level 15 you should be ok.

    • Max out a sub class and then get weapons you're comfortable with and you'll be fine after that, no matter what level you're on

    • I say not until you're 20. 15 the least. The reason why I say twenty is because your powers arent fully unlocked in whatever class you have chosen. Yes level advantages are disabled but you still dont have everything you need.

    • You can pvp at any level. And the crucible is actually a good way to level up a fresh character. Perks and extra abilities make things easier. I've been taken down by level 5's before. Skill makes the most difference. Except for iron banner. Don't enter that if you're under 25.

      • It depends on your preference. I've got a Titan character I leveled up by straight crucible bounties and crucible, all the way from level 5. But when you're under twenty, it's a lot more skill based, as those 29s have the gear to back them up, whereas a level six with an uncommon hand cannon is reliant on skill, not gear. And you can tell people's team by the name plate. If you see a name and level, there's your team, and names always show, so you can see them from far away. If there's no name, fire away.

        • 2. Both of my alt characters started in the crucible after the first mission. Its a much quicker way to level up compared to story missions

            • At minimum 5 so you have the basic upgrades in your skill tree. I usually start at 2 and it's really tough on certain levels because you can't double jump.

            • I would at least have your super before trying out Crucible and maybe a set of guns you're comfortable with.

            • The only way to see if they're on your team is when your in the game( I'm one Xbox) press the back button but besides that you can't.

            • Don't know if someone has answered this but... Usually your team mates will have their PSN/GT user name above there heads. The opposing team will not be running around with their name over their head. Your enemies name only appears once you aim down on them.

            • Best advice I can give is to keep at it. Learn the maps and find the weapon(s) you are most comfortable with.

              • I've played in crucible with as low as lvl 2 characters. One of my best Clash matches was with my lvl 15 Titan. I know...lvl 15, big deal right? Except that was when I unlocked my subclass Defender for the first time, in between matches. When I swapped over to it I had nothing unlocked. No double jump, grenades, melee, super ability...no nuthin'. Just a green rifle. That was the first time I got more than a 10 kill streak going, just stalking the outer edges of the map and backing up my teammates with primary fire. I think I had a green shotgun for anyone who got too close, but it was mostly rifle kills. You can still win without the added abilities and weapon perks, just have to play smart and be strategic instead of just running out into the enemies' bullets. Good luck!

              • Level advantages are disabled in PvP outside iron banner, so it boils down to unlocked abilities and weapons. Obviously level 20 weapons will outperform rares and commons, but each weapon type deals relatively the same amount of damage regardless of weapon level. For example a rare blue auto rifle with the same ROF as a shadow price will deal the same damage.

                • 5 really, my first time playing the game was when the first iron banner released, did pretty well even though it was only a slight increase. It's still terrible when you let a low level play well. All you really need to do is play smart, don't be the guy who takes bullets to the face.
