Looking at how other games operate I'm ok with this, as most games where you level, your weapons generally lose power and you end up just forgetting about them. You unlock weapons in CoD or Titanfall and when you prestige you have to unlock them again. In MMOs you work towards high end gear and it disappears in the next expansion. I like that my weapons from original release will translate to useable weapons in the new expansions. I like a lot of people put a lot of work in upgrading my exotics and legendaries, but I'd rather have to level them up again than lose the ability to use then on higher content because they are no longer powerful enough. I would like to see a material exchange for ascendant to radiant possibly and radiant to exotic shards. Looking forward to the expansion and hitting the new raid though.
