I don't know if you've ever noticed, but those arenas are the same as the one with Atheon in it. The only clear sense to call it would be, the past and the future. Just because something has jungle doesn't mean it's Venus, and just because it is a barren area doesn't mean it's Mars either. If you are gonna go by those standards then call them both Earth.
Edit: this wasn't really me asking why people are calling the past and future by the planets. I was asking for each of your individual opinions on why you call it that. I was just saying what they actually are, which is the past and the future. They are time portals.
Edit: I personally like to say left or right, but I'm trying to have people know that when you go through the portals it actually doesn't take you to those planets. Believe it or not, a lot of people actually think that. Also to the people who are getting mad saying just use the radar. I believe it is faster to use a call out than to use the radar. I believe not using call outs takes away from the excitement of playing the vault.

5 RepliesProbably the same reason that Americans call the Native Americans "indians"
-
That's what I learned from when I did my first raid..and I still ask what planet people are on.

1 ReplyEdited by Old Man Phenom: 12/3/2014 6:46:00 PMIf people called them banana and wrench, and it works, then who the hell cares?
-
It makes sense to say Mars Left or Venus Right...plus if I am inside, it reminds me which way to turn when I exit so I don't waste time. Mars left, so when I come out, I turn left...ya know?
-
Edited by Slippe: 12/3/2014 6:45:27 PMDoesn't matter what they call them. As long as you guys get it done. Also people probably call them that because familiarity. The left portal resembles Mars, due to the sand and the light red/orange textures. And the right resembles Venus, from the grass and dark green texture. Whatever helps people make the connection to which portal is for which side, is totally fine by me. I don't care if they call it something ridiculous, as long as I can understand which portal, then I'm fine.
-
Started for my group when we first did the raid. We didn't know what was going on we just knew it was green or sandy which meant Venus and Mars until we actually started to look around. So basically when the raid first came out it was assumed to be different planet
-
Ive called jungle/desert, venus/mars, or not call anything as the people outside would open both portals. Also, u can tel which side the team teleported to by looking at the minimap
-
Because one looks like a jungle and the other a desert? Exactly how mars and venus look? Not a hard concept to grasp.
-
I say Mars left and Venus right. No one misunderstands that way.
-
They look like Mars and Venus?
-
2 RepliesWhy call both the portals Earth? Shouldn't they all be "Venus," since the Vault is on VENUS?
-
I think as long as the people outside the portal know which side to open it doesn't matter what they're called.
-
I agree on the call outs part, and it pisses me off when I ask and some smartass says "check the radar" instead of just saying left or right.
-
i didn't read your wall of text due to the title
-
I gave up pointing out that they're both Venus long ago, personally I still just call left or right I don't understand how to make it any more simple than that.
-
So what you are saying is you get butt hurt pretty easily then?
-
We call it green poop and brown poop
-
Past and future can get confusing, as is often a problem when it comes to time travel. So I call them out as desert and jungle.
-
It's for simplicity. People know it as Venus & Mars so that's what people go by to make it easier for everyone else. Personally, I just look at the radar...

Edited by Caulophacus: 12/2/2014 5:53:27 PMHeres the problem with past and future, both time zones can see into the sky which if you look at how geology works, the rock would have to be weathered for a very long time to expose the sky because you are underground. "Venus" is partially weathered, "mars" is very weathered exposing a lot of the world. Its almost like they are both varying future time periods

3 RepliesWe call it Mars or Venus because they follow the aesthetics. You could easily call it "Desert" and "Jungle," Left and Right, or Flapjack and Waffle for all I care, as long as the raid understands and knows where to go.
It isn't too far outside of the lore to disallow the possibility that the portal sides (specifically, the left portal) teleport to Mars and Venus. We know from the story that the Vex can teleport, instantaneously, across planets, and heavily hinted that they teleport through time as well. All this hints at the possibility that they have roughly infinite constructs and installations similar to the Vault of Glass. The portals deep in the vault could lead to two similar Vaults on *any* planet in their range, which is never established. You could be on a Mars-similar planet light years away for all we know. All we know is "holy shit we gotta get back soon, open dat portal."
Hey you're your own game focus on the mcc.gosh halo
-
I generally prefer "left/right" myself, but will just go with whatever the group I'm running with decides to call it. Honestly, what does it matter anyway? The idea is to let the rest of your team know where you were warped to.
-
4 RepliesIve known it was past and future before ever playing VOG since I watched Datto beat it the day it came out on his stream. I still call it Mars and Venus sometimes since its so common. Lately I try to only say Left or Right. Btw, your radar will point to the portal that the away team is in so we dont really even need to say it.
-
I've taken some noobs on the raid recently, and it is just way easier to explain it as Mars and Venus. If they're teleported it's easier for them to call out the planet names, then to remember left or right. And if they're on the outside, I always explain it as alphabetical order, left to right, M before V, Mars = left, Venus = right. Like others have said it doesn't matter what you call it as long as everyone understands. And I know you weren't taking issue with that, just inquiring about the reasons, so... Already explained that. I'll stop rambling.

You can call them Laverne and Shirley for all I care, just had the right gate open when I'm coming through.
