Was it in their will to be known as a woman? What did it say on their birth certificate?

The article didn't say what was on their birth certificate but she did have her name legally changed. I don't think she had made up her will. She was still really young to be worrying about a will but this only pushes the importance of one if you'd find yourself in the same place.
