In the wake of the Return of Iron Banner, some words of advice to those who SUCK at PvP...from one who once did (long)

Edit 3 (Edits 1 & 2 below): I'd like to thank everyone who's responded and been complimentary. I wrote it to help others see that they can get better at PvP if they just see the problems they have and put forth the effort to fix them. For those reading this for the first time, there is a wealth of knowledge that has been dropped by those who know how to do this so I implore you to read through the comments and check it out for yourselves. Again, thank you all for responding and thank you to those who have defended me against the haters who only wish to bitch and not be positive. Guys, Iron Banner returns this week (or so I've heard) and I cannot wait to jump in there and kick some ass, and this is funny considering that when it first came around I did it sparingly since, the sad truth was, I was terrible at PvP. I'd ditched the Thorn bounty three times because of the crucible part and the same was done with Invective. I'd read of others ditching these bounties and/or avoiding the PvP altogether for the same reasons as I and I just let it go as a part of the game I would never be a part of. But then I got the Invective bounty again (A Dubious Task) and, as I was half way through discarding it--I stopped. Looking at the screen and that elusive gold square looking back at me, I had a revelation: I was going to f*cking figure out the PvP one way or another and get that gun! I went to the crucible and got my ass kicked again and again, but this time I didn't mind because I wasn't there to win, I was there to learn: what were the guys who were killing me in firefights doing to beat me, even when I'd gotten the jump on them? How was it that I kept getting caught flat-footed, even from cover? Why wasn't I killing these guys even though I had blasted them dead on center mass (or so I thought)? And how in the f*ck does that damned radar work??????? These questions and others haunted me, but in time, through ass beatings, forum posts, ass beatings, YouTube videos and more ass beatings, I started to figure it out. Slowly, very slowly, I started not to get killed so much and then I started to hit back. I never got that much of a high score, but I was starting to get a score...and soon things started to change. It took awhile, but I started getting better, and then, on 11/1/14, this happened: http://i.imgur.com/SVxrZ12.jpg Yes, as shocked to sh*t as I was, I was the lead scorer on a winning team (I'd come out on top of a few losing teams before that, but this was the one that got me the most). I couldn't believe it! Was this a fluke? Well, no, it wasn't. I haven't done it often, but I came out on top a few more times on winning teams and yesterday I did something extraordinary (the impetus for writing this post): http://i.imgur.com/IlkIYpA.jpg Yes, that's 32 kills which included a 12 victim long killing spree. I f*cking dominated that match and I had so much fun doing it that I thought I should write this post for those of you who suck at Crucible but wish they could join. The RNG sucks to high heaven, yes (it wasn't until two weeks ago that I got a legendary prize--and from a Blue engram of all things (Final Boss--f*ck yeah!!!) and the matchmaking is kinda lopsided (one match your team dominates, the next you're getting ass--blam!-), but the fun I have is more then enough for me (though watching that dude in forth place on our losing team--which I topped--get Thunderload really pissed me the f*ck off). So, some words of advice: 1-Don't f*cking stand still--EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can't tell you how many time I've gotten kills from guys who just stand there and shoot at me. In the words of the great Muhammad Ali you gotta 'Float like a butterfly and sting like a bee'. Bob and weave, move your feet--keep moving. All of the best I see constantly keep in motion as it's so much harder to get all those hits on them. 2-Figure out the radar: it may seem like a challenge, but it's much more simple then you may think. This video will help you out with that: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vDumLvofnLc 3-Bring the proper guns!! I know you may love that pulse rifle in PvE, but in PvP, it'll likely get you dead (if you're not good to begin with). Hand Cannons & Auto Rifles are good Primary weapons for the guy who's still learning (leave the Scout Rifles for more polished hands, okay.) For Specials, Shotguns get a bad rap and some of it I think is deserved, but it'll get you through a tight spot for sure. Snipers? Don't even bother as those take a practiced hand (and the distances in the majority of matches negate it's pluses except for the very gifted (which, if you're taking these words to heart, you are not). Fusion Rifles? I'm an FR lover for sure, but these also take a talented hand to use and I don't really recommend them for the guy trying to get good. Remember, you're not trying to win every match off of the bat, you're just trying to figure out the essentials so that you'll have a base of knowledge from which you can build on. 4-Most importantly--Small chunk it: That's right. Don't go all in trying to win the match or get a high score, go it to answer the questions you're having problems with like I can't figure out the radar--go and just try to figure out how it works, f*ck how many times you die doing it. I can't hit these guys in the head--spend 5 or 6 matches just trying to figure out the mechanics of the headshot. I can't this, I can't that--take your time, take a few matches and figure that aspect out, too. To get good at the Crucible (or anything for that matter) is simply a matter of getting down the various aspects that make it all work (i.e. The Fundamentals). Each part exemplifies the whole and when you take them apart and learn how they work, you start seeing that this isn't that much of a mystery at all, it just seemed that way because you weren't taking the time to learn the language. Do these things and you will get better--I did and you can. And though I'm nowhere near the best, I have a great time doing it now and that's more important than anything. To all those who have figured this out, please feel free to comment on what you think others can do to get better. Thanks for reading, guys. Enjoy Edit: BTW, I forgot to mention that not only did I get Invective, but I good Thorn soon after. :-D Edit 2: I want to thank those who have complimented me on this post, especially those that are already good at PvP. If you look at my K/D across my characters, you'll notice it's pretty bad, but then that's because of how abysmal I was in PvP for so long. Those photos don't lie though and they're not the only ones of got of me being top dog (and those are only of the times when my team won). I wouldn't still be playing if I hadn't improved. Stay strong and persevere.

Great post! Upvoted. My struggles with the Crucible have been many and it's worth more people like you posting about their progress to encourage others. It's definitely encouraged me. I have a strong history in PC gaming, playing at a reasonable level competitively for a few years. I took a long time off gaming entirely and only picked up the PS4 in the last 6 weeks or so. I'm used to KD ratios of 4-1 and better in games like Battlefield, CoD, CS and TF2. I've finished rounds in PC games with KDs of 40-0 or thereabouts, with decently-matched opponents. You can only imagine how humiliating it's been trying to fumble with thumb sticks and slowly build my KD up above 0.6-1 in The Crucible. Hearing people brag about a 2-1 KD after they played for hundreds of hours makes me weep, but it also keeps me motivated. Single-player and co-op missions will only get me so far. I know full well that any game with serious longevity needs a strong PvP element. I'm committed to making this work for me. I wish I had more practice before this Iron Banner dropped, but I feel I should just bite the bullet and get involved, setting ego aside for the greater good. Hopefully, not too many of my teammates will rage at me for "learning on the job".

    • Probably the most helpful and common sense thing I have read on the forums. Well done bro. It is really good advice. One thing I would re-confirm is that to be better play ALOT. Just keep playing. Not only do you become more comfortable with the maps but you work up your skill set as well. Im not the best at PvP but the more I play and watch others (both my team and opponents) the more I learn and better I get. My K/D ratio is still rubbish but its way better than what it was.

When it comes to CoD, I always top leader boards, but the crucible..... Well I suck. I haven't really practiced much. Only time I've really pvpd is with friends & for bountys. Tomorrow the iron banner rolls out and we'll I shoulda practiced before, but now that they are rewards I'll die over and over and over until I master the art of bungies pvp. Let's have fun tomorrow! Huuu-Rah any last words?? Lololol pun intended.

    • Weird... some games take time to develop skill before you do good? Who would have thought? Sorry, no offense OP. Good post. Just so many people that can't be bothered to get better at PvP.

      • The best advice I can give is, keep your distance, never get close, let them run to you and pick them off that way, it always works for me with a handcannon, Thorn. If you see a sniper, shoot, strafe, jump, shoot.

      • Great post. I've played thousands upon thousands of games of halo 2, 3 , and reach mainly, so have the experience in competitive multiplayer. But throughout the beta and first few weeks the crucible seemed like a real blood bath, almost impossible to do good in. Now I'm the one making the blood bath. It just takes a while to figure out what works where.

      • Great post. I'm pretty average but working on a build and playing to its strengths is what helped me out. I will have my Titan set up for max speed, forward sheild and auto shotty for banner. I stay inside this strategy and it works out. Good stuff man.

      • I was terrible when I first started playing and was in the .4 - .5 k/d range. Now my second character has close to a 1 k/d and he's a tiny bit over 1 on control, which is all I've been playing recently. The thing that helped me most, which is probably super obvious to all the people who played Halo, is shoot people in the head. When I first started playing I would go like 4 and 17 and couldn't figure out how I managed to lose every single gun battle. Titanfall was really the only fps I'd played and I was so used to winning a gun fight if I got my sights on the other guy first. Once I realized that headshots are so important in this game, I started playing a lot better. A fully upgraded Suros has helped me a lot. It has almost no recoil and great range and the slow rate of fire makes it really easy to keep your sights on the guys' heads and take them down really fast. I usually use the Suros if I think my opponent is going to be at distance and then switch to a fusion rifle if I anticipate that it'll be a cqb.

      • Last time I was a level 27, but was using my only primary legendary...Bad Seed Down. I'm not a pulse rifle fan with the exception of SP and in the future Bad Juju because it looks beautiful. But anyone who enjoys pulse rifles an admit, that gun sucks. It was a death sentence. I won my first 4 games flawlessly (mind you I was near the bottom half of the leaderboards) my team still wrecked all 4 and I got my shader and emblem. So the bounties I thought I could do (like 5 during the entire event) were about half way done. I went back and it just fell apart. 4-5 games i consecutively lost. I crawled shamefully back into PvE, my natural element. And that was the end of everything.... But then, I started to learn how to use my New Monarchy fusion rifle. It is the weapon of the gods. I mastered crucible (Firebase Delphi is my spirit map) with pride. Now; level 30, mythoclast ready to go (could maybe use some upgrades though) I am excited to see how deadly I can be. Depending on how the vex feels, I'll either stick with it, go to Suros or Thorn (only Suros if I don't see much of it, I am a God with hand cannons, not to toot my own horn or anything) Idk about anyone else, but this is going to be a fun Iron Banner

Great post. I am at best average in the crucible but have a good match every few games and some bad ones. I was leery of the Thorn bounty as well but not this past weekend and decided to go after it. Worked my way through the bounty and got to @360 points in about 20 point chunks. Then the lights went out and wasn't even paying attention to how well I was doing. Second to last kill of my next match the bounty popped? I was like how did that just happen? Then i saw my score 32-8 my best score ever and never used my primary just my FR and Truth. I can say for sure that these tips will help everyone who wants to improve get better.

        • To be honest this post inspired me. As one of the higher tier players, i can truly say i guess I teach people pain, but then you will learn how to hit me right back. Those photos are not the best, sure too you but as Lord Shanxx would say, "It's a start." You'll only get better from here on out! I truly admire you, kids who complain and don't want to evaluate why they suck, need to read this post. This is a fact. It is just practice. And yes...PRACTICE APPLIES even in a video game. • I think that is solid advice. I would recommend using hand cannons to start with. They will teach you shot pacing, how to not panic, and how to keep some distance in a fire fight. Stay calm, pace your shots. I think for team play you should also try to preach map control. Very good advice.

            • The thing that made the biggest difference for me is slowing down an focusing first on staying alive. If I start doing poorly I'll start trying too hard and stop paying enough attention to my surroundings. If I reel myself in and focus I start doing better.
