In the wake of the Return of Iron Banner, some words of advice to those who SUCK at PvP...from one who once did (long)

Edit 3 (Edits 1 & 2 below): I'd like to thank everyone who's responded and been complimentary. I wrote it to help others see that they can get better at PvP if they just see the problems they have and put forth the effort to fix them. For those reading this for the first time, there is a wealth of knowledge that has been dropped by those who know how to do this so I implore you to read through the comments and check it out for yourselves. Again, thank you all for responding and thank you to those who have defended me against the haters who only wish to bitch and not be positive. Guys, Iron Banner returns this week (or so I've heard) and I cannot wait to jump in there and kick some ass, and this is funny considering that when it first came around I did it sparingly since, the sad truth was, I was terrible at PvP. I'd ditched the Thorn bounty three times because of the crucible part and the same was done with Invective. I'd read of others ditching these bounties and/or avoiding the PvP altogether for the same reasons as I and I just let it go as a part of the game I would never be a part of. But then I got the Invective bounty again (A Dubious Task) and, as I was half way through discarding it--I stopped. Looking at the screen and that elusive gold square looking back at me, I had a revelation: I was going to f*cking figure out the PvP one way or another and get that gun! I went to the crucible and got my ass kicked again and again, but this time I didn't mind because I wasn't there to win, I was there to learn: what were the guys who were killing me in firefights doing to beat me, even when I'd gotten the jump on them? How was it that I kept getting caught flat-footed, even from cover? Why wasn't I killing these guys even though I had blasted them dead on center mass (or so I thought)? And how in the f*ck does that damned radar work??????? These questions and others haunted me, but in time, through ass beatings, forum posts, ass beatings, YouTube videos and more ass beatings, I started to figure it out. Slowly, very slowly, I started not to get killed so much and then I started to hit back. I never got that much of a high score, but I was starting to get a score...and soon things started to change. It took awhile, but I started getting better, and then, on 11/1/14, this happened: http://i.imgur.com/SVxrZ12.jpg Yes, as shocked to sh*t as I was, I was the lead scorer on a winning team (I'd come out on top of a few losing teams before that, but this was the one that got me the most). I couldn't believe it! Was this a fluke? Well, no, it wasn't. I haven't done it often, but I came out on top a few more times on winning teams and yesterday I did something extraordinary (the impetus for writing this post): http://i.imgur.com/IlkIYpA.jpg Yes, that's 32 kills which included a 12 victim long killing spree. I f*cking dominated that match and I had so much fun doing it that I thought I should write this post for those of you who suck at Crucible but wish they could join. The RNG sucks to high heaven, yes (it wasn't until two weeks ago that I got a legendary prize--and from a Blue engram of all things (Final Boss--f*ck yeah!!!) and the matchmaking is kinda lopsided (one match your team dominates, the next you're getting ass--blam!-), but the fun I have is more then enough for me (though watching that dude in forth place on our losing team--which I topped--get Thunderload really pissed me the f*ck off). So, some words of advice: 1-Don't f*cking stand still--EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can't tell you how many time I've gotten kills from guys who just stand there and shoot at me. In the words of the great Muhammad Ali you gotta 'Float like a butterfly and sting like a bee'. Bob and weave, move your feet--keep moving. All of the best I see constantly keep in motion as it's so much harder to get all those hits on them. 2-Figure out the radar: it may seem like a challenge, but it's much more simple then you may think. This video will help you out with that: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vDumLvofnLc 3-Bring the proper guns!! I know you may love that pulse rifle in PvE, but in PvP, it'll likely get you dead (if you're not good to begin with). Hand Cannons & Auto Rifles are good Primary weapons for the guy who's still learning (leave the Scout Rifles for more polished hands, okay.) For Specials, Shotguns get a bad rap and some of it I think is deserved, but it'll get you through a tight spot for sure. Snipers? Don't even bother as those take a practiced hand (and the distances in the majority of matches negate it's pluses except for the very gifted (which, if you're taking these words to heart, you are not). Fusion Rifles? I'm an FR lover for sure, but these also take a talented hand to use and I don't really recommend them for the guy trying to get good. Remember, you're not trying to win every match off of the bat, you're just trying to figure out the essentials so that you'll have a base of knowledge from which you can build on. 4-Most importantly--Small chunk it: That's right. Don't go all in trying to win the match or get a high score, go it to answer the questions you're having problems with like I can't figure out the radar--go and just try to figure out how it works, f*ck how many times you die doing it. I can't hit these guys in the head--spend 5 or 6 matches just trying to figure out the mechanics of the headshot. I can't this, I can't that--take your time, take a few matches and figure that aspect out, too. To get good at the Crucible (or anything for that matter) is simply a matter of getting down the various aspects that make it all work (i.e. The Fundamentals). Each part exemplifies the whole and when you take them apart and learn how they work, you start seeing that this isn't that much of a mystery at all, it just seemed that way because you weren't taking the time to learn the language. Do these things and you will get better--I did and you can. And though I'm nowhere near the best, I have a great time doing it now and that's more important than anything. To all those who have figured this out, please feel free to comment on what you think others can do to get better. Thanks for reading, guys. Enjoy Edit: BTW, I forgot to mention that not only did I get Invective, but I good Thorn soon after. :-D Edit 2: I want to thank those who have complimented me on this post, especially those that are already good at PvP. If you look at my K/D across my characters, you'll notice it's pretty bad, but then that's because of how abysmal I was in PvP for so long. Those photos don't lie though and they're not the only ones of got of me being top dog (and those are only of the times when my team won). I wouldn't still be playing if I hadn't improved. Stay strong and persevere.

  • Very good post. I sucked in PvP for a long time (still do from time to time).....I did what your post suggests a few weeks ago and ...finally...started to do pretty good. Just keep fighting.

      • Also just heads up for those that don't know... The buff that Saladin is selling for one more of light to increase your iron banner gains is not a consumable. Ie. The countdown timer starts right away. So only buy it when u are ready for a big banner session.

        • Roughly how long would it take to get to rank 3 for boots, as the Raid won't give me them. I'm a pretty decent PvP player, just only played Crucible when the game first came out as I prefer PvE.

        • No person should ever have to use one or two particular types of weapons, play with any gun you want. Have fun and play for your team and that is all you can do.

        • Nice post man, great tips :) i'm not the greatest pvp player, i'll go negative in one match, then i'll be unstoppable in the next one. I'm not 'consistent', lol. Going back to the fundamentals is refreshing and takes me way back to the first pvp fps I ever played. Turok on N64 couch versus is what started it all for me. Good times and a lot of worn out joysticks.

        • I agree with most of the things in the post. I too really sucked at PvP, although I am now what I'd consider close to average, it took me a while to understand PvP. The main two issues which have already been highlighted in OP was I never understood the radar and had to read a guide which enhanced my understanding. Also, I was using the wrong weapons for my playstyle, an autorifle (Suros Regime -non upgraded) combined with a shotty seemed to work best for me. Another piece of advice is learn the spawns of Heavy Ammo and timers. Even a below average player can decimate with a heavy machine gun. First time I got the Mark of the Unbroken title (minimum 15 kills streak and no deaths in the game), I was shocked and surprised, but I knew I had improved vastly from when I first started.

        • I Love pitting my skills up against people online, I've been pretty good at a few FPS games, CoD4 being my favourite, I've always had 2+ KD on the cod games, not as good on here yet but I could switch around a few things on my sunsinger class and make it easier for myself but I like my build so ill stick with it. A few things I notice in PvP is that as soon as you shoot somebody they jump in the air, this is a stupid mistake, it's harder to aim and it slows you down unless you have blink on, plus it makes you a target for other people! I don't get why people do this all the time. People who instantly throw grenades as soon as they get shot? unless its a sticky then there is no point, you cause damage then die, then I just retreat, heal and im back in the fight within a couple of seconds. grenades need to be used tactically. This game has been quite poor without teamspeak online and not been able to communicate with other people in your team, not that the majority would listen, PvP is all about calling and playing as a team, locking down the map and controlling your enemies and there spawns, I play with a couple of people on this game who just play for the laugh, as I do but sometimes it would be nice to either play some competitive people with a decent team and either not just get battered by a team or just destroy the enemy team cos they couldn't hit a barn door with Truth. PvP is pretty fun on this game but could be made far better, a few more game types etc, also maybe some kind of ranking system. Plus I don't get why you think that Fusion Rifles are hard to use, they one shot from quite far away, plus you just tap your shot trigger when you see that people are close to you and its basically half charged all the time, pretty easy to use if you ask me, apart from that the suros is still a beast, if I had that gun I reckon I would be pretty untouchable.

        • Thanks, hopefully I can get a more positive mind to PvP, but normally just a means to an end for weapons to use in PvE.

        • Why do you need VOID kills to get a NON VOID weapon? I got thorn and always wondered that.

Well said.. I have never been bad in Pvp, but I guess some upper-mid skill. I can handle a sniper at any distance, I use Hand cannons and Scout rifles more than Auto rifles, and I use shotguns quite a lot, if a map is built in a way that compliments it. Don't be stupid. Adapt to your surroundings. The thing that deters me from playing online for the most part is simply not having people to play with. I play online not just to win, but to have fun. That's why I don't eagerly jump into the Iron banner or Trails of Osiris. Yes, I have the individual skill, but I lack the team to compliment me. I have a lot more fun in a game where I land every shot, every grenade goes where I wish it to, and foes fall rapidly to my shiny golden gun. Keep going man. Made my day reading this!

            • Good post, in light of Iron Banner I hope all you join in. Help me attain rank 5 on two characters easier :) I'll gladly beat the snot out of all of you. Just don't take it personally, and hopefully learn some things. Dance like a butterfly, sting like a bee. You stop moving you're dead. See yah in the battlefield Guardians. Cheers

Nice one. It shows that if you stick at it, you should improve in the end. Most people refuse to stick at it, because they continue to get rekt. Everybody that is good now didn't start out good. You will get rekt at first, but you should improve if you put the effort in to get better. Instead of trying to improve, most would rather complain and ask for PvP to stop being a requirement for the exotic bounties.

                    • My big piece or two of advice is: Stick within sight of your teammates, unless splitting flanks. As a hunter, I make sure I can scoop and drop orbs. I'll take a death just to grab 4 orbs for my next super. Pay attention to play styles. Without getting technical, you have two major types. Aggressive and passive. Work around these, and recognize them. Learn your maps. Find choke points and short cuts.

                    • To me one of the most important things when learning your maps is knowing the shotgun kill zones ... i still run in to them not thinking but with all the shotgun play nowadays in the crucible just knowing where to not go can cut you k/d in half
