In the wake of the Return of Iron Banner, some words of advice to those who SUCK at PvP...from one who once did (long)

Edit 3 (Edits 1 & 2 below): I'd like to thank everyone who's responded and been complimentary. I wrote it to help others see that they can get better at PvP if they just see the problems they have and put forth the effort to fix them. For those reading this for the first time, there is a wealth of knowledge that has been dropped by those who know how to do this so I implore you to read through the comments and check it out for yourselves. Again, thank you all for responding and thank you to those who have defended me against the haters who only wish to bitch and not be positive. Guys, Iron Banner returns this week (or so I've heard) and I cannot wait to jump in there and kick some ass, and this is funny considering that when it first came around I did it sparingly since, the sad truth was, I was terrible at PvP. I'd ditched the Thorn bounty three times because of the crucible part and the same was done with Invective. I'd read of others ditching these bounties and/or avoiding the PvP altogether for the same reasons as I and I just let it go as a part of the game I would never be a part of. But then I got the Invective bounty again (A Dubious Task) and, as I was half way through discarding it--I stopped. Looking at the screen and that elusive gold square looking back at me, I had a revelation: I was going to f*cking figure out the PvP one way or another and get that gun! I went to the crucible and got my ass kicked again and again, but this time I didn't mind because I wasn't there to win, I was there to learn: what were the guys who were killing me in firefights doing to beat me, even when I'd gotten the jump on them? How was it that I kept getting caught flat-footed, even from cover? Why wasn't I killing these guys even though I had blasted them dead on center mass (or so I thought)? And how in the f*ck does that damned radar work??????? These questions and others haunted me, but in time, through ass beatings, forum posts, ass beatings, YouTube videos and more ass beatings, I started to figure it out. Slowly, very slowly, I started not to get killed so much and then I started to hit back. I never got that much of a high score, but I was starting to get a score...and soon things started to change. It took awhile, but I started getting better, and then, on 11/1/14, this happened: http://i.imgur.com/SVxrZ12.jpg Yes, as shocked to sh*t as I was, I was the lead scorer on a winning team (I'd come out on top of a few losing teams before that, but this was the one that got me the most). I couldn't believe it! Was this a fluke? Well, no, it wasn't. I haven't done it often, but I came out on top a few more times on winning teams and yesterday I did something extraordinary (the impetus for writing this post): http://i.imgur.com/IlkIYpA.jpg Yes, that's 32 kills which included a 12 victim long killing spree. I f*cking dominated that match and I had so much fun doing it that I thought I should write this post for those of you who suck at Crucible but wish they could join. The RNG sucks to high heaven, yes (it wasn't until two weeks ago that I got a legendary prize--and from a Blue engram of all things (Final Boss--f*ck yeah!!!) and the matchmaking is kinda lopsided (one match your team dominates, the next you're getting ass--blam!-), but the fun I have is more then enough for me (though watching that dude in forth place on our losing team--which I topped--get Thunderload really pissed me the f*ck off). So, some words of advice: 1-Don't f*cking stand still--EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can't tell you how many time I've gotten kills from guys who just stand there and shoot at me. In the words of the great Muhammad Ali you gotta 'Float like a butterfly and sting like a bee'. Bob and weave, move your feet--keep moving. All of the best I see constantly keep in motion as it's so much harder to get all those hits on them. 2-Figure out the radar: it may seem like a challenge, but it's much more simple then you may think. This video will help you out with that: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vDumLvofnLc 3-Bring the proper guns!! I know you may love that pulse rifle in PvE, but in PvP, it'll likely get you dead (if you're not good to begin with). Hand Cannons & Auto Rifles are good Primary weapons for the guy who's still learning (leave the Scout Rifles for more polished hands, okay.) For Specials, Shotguns get a bad rap and some of it I think is deserved, but it'll get you through a tight spot for sure. Snipers? Don't even bother as those take a practiced hand (and the distances in the majority of matches negate it's pluses except for the very gifted (which, if you're taking these words to heart, you are not). Fusion Rifles? I'm an FR lover for sure, but these also take a talented hand to use and I don't really recommend them for the guy trying to get good. Remember, you're not trying to win every match off of the bat, you're just trying to figure out the essentials so that you'll have a base of knowledge from which you can build on. 4-Most importantly--Small chunk it: That's right. Don't go all in trying to win the match or get a high score, go it to answer the questions you're having problems with like I can't figure out the radar--go and just try to figure out how it works, f*ck how many times you die doing it. I can't hit these guys in the head--spend 5 or 6 matches just trying to figure out the mechanics of the headshot. I can't this, I can't that--take your time, take a few matches and figure that aspect out, too. To get good at the Crucible (or anything for that matter) is simply a matter of getting down the various aspects that make it all work (i.e. The Fundamentals). Each part exemplifies the whole and when you take them apart and learn how they work, you start seeing that this isn't that much of a mystery at all, it just seemed that way because you weren't taking the time to learn the language. Do these things and you will get better--I did and you can. And though I'm nowhere near the best, I have a great time doing it now and that's more important than anything. To all those who have figured this out, please feel free to comment on what you think others can do to get better. Thanks for reading, guys. Enjoy Edit: BTW, I forgot to mention that not only did I get Invective, but I good Thorn soon after. :-D Edit 2: I want to thank those who have complimented me on this post, especially those that are already good at PvP. If you look at my K/D across my characters, you'll notice it's pretty bad, but then that's because of how abysmal I was in PvP for so long. Those photos don't lie though and they're not the only ones of got of me being top dog (and those are only of the times when my team won). I wouldn't still be playing if I hadn't improved. Stay strong and persevere.

  • I stopped reading after he said that fusion rifles take a skilled hand..they are without a doubt the most noob weapon in the game. A nutless monkey could get kills with one it requires no skill at all.

    • just like any other pvp fps game most important thing is knowledge, knowing the maps and spawns. being able to know where the other team will be, knowing which routes to take depending on spawns. then after that its gun knowledge I use different guns depending on the map like mat for exp a great map for the suros has long straight line of sights easy to take advantage with the suros. then theres maps like blue which a fast fire rate AR works well I use the vanq or a non upgraded suros (hint if xur sell suros again buy one and don't upgraged it put smart drift and now you have a laser) also this game tempo is fast or slow so sometimes it pays to be able to know the tempo of the game theres times where the other team is playing slow and ill just straight up rush shotgun in hand and just destroy them after that its just skill and thumbs

    • No offence meant at all, but I really do not understand people that can't play PVP. I've always been decent at it, not going to brag and say I'm awesome or anything, but occasionally I play PVE with people and they're great, we switch to PVP and they just can't seem to work it out. I just don't get it.
ENLIGHTEN ME
• How is the radar hard to understand? It's literally a circle with bright red marks where enemies are. Yet 30% of my kills are on people who don't even look at the radar so I just follow them around and punch them in the back. You look at it. It shows enemies. The end.

            • Basically you are telling people to keep practicing and they might get good... you aren't the first person to think of that. I think the tips you gave were really self explanatory. Plus, if somebody doesn't know how to use the radar after playing PvE, they have a problem.

              • Great post. I have to say i understand that feeling, i ran away from Crucible as well since the last FPS MP i played was Goldeneye on the N64. However, the urge to get those exotic weapons pushed me to start learning the fundamentals. First invective, then Bad Juju if i recall correctly; and still struggled so hard on it, and then the Thorn bounty came to me. 5 days of crucible, getting to 80 points and then watch that go all the way back to zero, enough said. Thank the thorn for forging me in the fires of the Crucible.

              • Forget it. PvP has been AWFUL from the day "Destiny" came out, and "The Return (more like 'The Revenge') of 'The Iron Banner" was "the last straw" for me. I blew my stack about how frustrating it was, accidentally broke my one and only controller, and got in trouble with my parents; so I'm on the bench until further notice. To whoever came up with this "copperhead" of a mode: I HATE YOUR GUTS! YOUR "FRANKENSTEIN" OF A "GAME" GOT ME IN TROUBLE!

Good post brotha, glad you're having fun at it. I too sucked at first and it took time to get them unbroken medals. Everything you said is good advice. Pretty sure all the chill guardians out there appreciate your post. See you on the field!

              • Thanks for this post- I've been horrific at PvP since day one- I honestly gave up. I just tried my hand at it again literally this morning with my warlock. And while my team didn't win. And I wasn't the highest scoring- I was second highest on the losing team with a k/d of 0.53. When you compare that with my k/d of 0.13 of the crucible with the Titan I was blown away! And I had fun doing it!! So reading this makes me want to go back in and play some more. Thanks again!!

              • I've had a similar experience recently. I hated PvP at first. I found it ridiculously difficult. I was always dying from spraying and praying shotgun/auto rifle wielding twerps. But, the past few weeks, I took up my Scout Rifle and went in. Practice makes perfect. It takes time to get better. Today, I got 25 kills and a 4.5 K/D. That is a massive improvement on the early days. You have to think about the radar like a game of chess. They know where you are, you know where they are ... the question is 'what move should I make?' Also, thinking outside of the box is key. People always play from this point, run through those doors, use this choke ... DON'T DO IT. Be different and think about position and control the space around you. Let the enemy come to you. Run away if you need to. Aim for the head. Keep moving. Have fun.

              • My biggest issue with the Iron Banner is that it essentially ensures level dominance. A level 25-26 going in is going to routinely meet level 30 epeen waggers who are going to be using every goddamned piece of fully-upgraded raid gear they have. For those who haven't had the blessings of RNGesus, it's just one more way the game can give you the finger: Now you have to kill enemies with roughly 50% more bullets just because higher level. Still eminently doable, it's just very frustrating, especially when you have a full team of players with crap like Vex Mythoclasts and Invectives. Treat the entire game like the enemies are playing Perfect Dark with one shot kills on but you don't, since you'll be encountering people with full raid sets every 3 feet. It is hilariously awesome when you pop some level 30 death machine with a green-level pulse rifle from behind, though.

                • Not shabby, but missing some key points: Learn maps. Learn spawns. Learn guns and learn to identify them at a distance by sound/appearance. Remember your enemies class choice. (I usually just stick to top 3 players) The rest was pretty much covered.

                • Good read. Only thing I'd add is the importance of knowing the maps. People seem to come out of nowhere if you don't know the various intersections, back paths, and choke points.

                  • Pity all the things you said work only for that people get a good connection and use the keyboard+ mouse. Why you ask? Simple: 1)First point: agree with you, you need to attack and move, but you forgot to said in crucible people spam bombs and bullets like hell, than there are people like hide and shoot you with sniper rifle. So if you try to escape its to late. 2)The radar system? It suck like hell, because its true it said where your enemy is, but its true it tell you even where are the bombs. So you dont know if on the radar there's an enemy or a bomb (and i hope they fix it). 3)Ok true but, if your enemy use an exotic weapons and you an legendary/normal weapon, most of the time you lose... And most of the time the people use the mouse and get the best connection kill you with 2 shoots, when we mortal people need like 4/5 4)Its true you cant win all the PvP match, but its true if you start die and lost to much you can throw away Destiny and play CoD. Because our server lag and suck :=)

:( Why does PR get such a bad rep? Was hoping #3 would explain that. I started off with AR and it didn't take much for me to just switch to HC...but I've been enjoying PR for most of my matches. I am a beginner, however, and only hit above 100 matches this weekend. My kd for the most time seemed "a lot of hard work for a shat KD" before the switch. Could you please elaborate why I should discontinue using a PR? Is it because it develops bad habits or..? AR used: don't remember, was rare HC used: mostly Nifty_Biscuit til TDYK (but that was for no more than 4 matches)* PR used: Strange Suspect PS: I never use PRs in PvE...mostly HC and Scout.
EDIT: meant to put TDYK on the same line as nifty biscuit, not next to strange suspect
