Hey people. i've spent five and a half hours straight tryin to beat this guy and for the first time playing legendary i've very nearly given up. Plasma rifles and carbines are the only weapons on the level, plasma rifels dont seem to have any effect at all on him. The carbine takes a hell of a lot of shots to take out his shields, and ammo is very scarce. Sgt Johnson's sniper rifle has no effect and neither do the elites who come to help. In other words, the only way (that i can see anyway) to kill him, is to use the carbine which runs out of ammo about five minutes in. Anyone who has managed to kill the stinkin ape (i respect you), could you please give me some useful advice other then what ive already mentioned above. THANK YOU!

Here's how I did it (difficult, but seriously, at least try it): I jumped down to the mid (after chucking a 'nade into the midst of the 4 brutes). level and blasted his sorry ass with my shotgun/brute shot. I then ran around the bottom a bit and found two Brute Plasma Rifles, which I traded my shotgun for. After this it was a bit of cat & mouse killing the brutes, but MY reinforcements (the elites) came in another wave helped out. This time, I waited for Tarterous to kill off the Elite with the needlers. After this I dual-needled. I waited for the Sarge to take out his sheilds then unloaded my Needles on 'im. Since the needles stop any enemy AND blow up, Tarturus couldn't move. Lather, rinse, repeat. InnocentFlame out. [Edited on 11/29/2004 12:06:23 PM]

noooooo do as i told you it'll take 7 minutes, 5 maybe lol seriously, covie sniper and shotgun
Posted by: TheDukeofDanger Just wait for Johnson to take out his sheilds, and then use a dual weild plaZma rifles on his head (I used blue, they seemed to work better). But make sure that you shoot him in the face when you do it. This takes patience and about three downed sheilds to work, but thats how I did it. Make sure that you have Johnson lower the sheilds for you, otherwise your just wasting ammo. Good luck.
sgt johnson won't take the shields down by himself on legendary you have to take the shields down after he hits tartarus twice, then use the shotgun the damage you cause doesn't count, what counts is the number of times you take down his shield
-
My version Johnson takes his sheilds off. Just unload with any weapon you can find, I took him down in about 20 min with duel wielded BPRs work pretty good.

If anyone tries my method successfully on Legendary, message me so I know if it's not just my game that does this. Sometimes glitches are beneficial...

oh and a banshee DOES help to kiil the brute reinforcements that show up once in a while
-
i have the perfect answer for you you need a covie sniper and a shotgun, some of the brutes have shotguns so you can pick up the ammo run around the mid level but, in front of sgt johnson, so that he can hit tartarus when he hits tartarus twice you hit him with a 3rd shot of the covenant sniper, then hit him only once with the shotgun, and he will say:"lucky hit" that starts a cicle, so just repeat what i said, but don't just hit him once with the shotgun when you do this process 3 or 4 times he will lose, it'll take 7 minutes max trust me, this is the best option [Edited on 11/29/2004 11:32:40 AM]

Drive a scorpian or a pelican into the control room or one that worked for me was the forerunner ship that was effective. lol You can also make him swallow the index or throw 343 guilty spark at him. Or try boarding him.you know hold x to board tartarus. [Edited on 11/29/2004 11:20:18 AM]

There's an easy way to beat Tartarus on Legendary, but I guess it's kind of cheating, because it seems like a glitch to me. If you get on the top level of that platform and get a good weapon ( I used dual Brute Plasma Rifles) and stand as close to the edge as possible without touching the gravity lift, Tartarus will make his way over to it on the level below and get stuck at the bottom for like 20 seconds. Just sit and wait for Johnson to hit 3 Beam Rifle blasts and fire at his head like crazy. But he does sometimes shoot up to the top so watch out for that. Also, when the Brute reinforcements come, run back and let the elites kill them because they will shoot up at your spot and Legendary is like literally 1 hit kills for them. Tartarus always gets stuck though if you sit right on the edge above him. [Edited on 11/29/2004 11:24:33 AM]

If Tartarus is the first time you've ever felt like giving up on legendary, you must be skipping around, the only thing about tartarus that's harder in legendary is the brutes that come in later on. Just kill him like you did in heroic, it just takes longer.
-
The fight with tartarus on legendary is boring and long, i killed him in 2 hours or so, the best weapon to kill him is the carabine. I used the elites that had needlers to kill him, i take out his shields with the carabine and then 3 or 4 explosions of needles. At the end, we were shooting at him with 3 needlers(one dual wielding elite, and another one) johnson with the sniper, and me with the carabine to take out his shields. Wow.
-
I must have a defective copy. Tartarus is literally the easiest enemy in the game for me. Grunts with Needlers on Legendary are more dangerous than Tartarus.

I completed it last night on legendary and to tell you the the truth its hard. First get that banshee in there, kill the Brutes in the room with it, and fly it to where the cutscene starts. As soon as the cutscene finishes turn round and head for the room you came from. Grab as much ammo as you can in there and make sure you have the following. Carbine (full ammo) and a Sword. Grab the banshee and fly to the top of the Floors. Aim at Tartarus, wait for Johnson to shoot him twice then shoot at Tatarus's head (until you use up a full clip, his shield will go down (around about the 14th shot). He should say "Lucky hit, you won't have another." Grab the Banshee. KIll the Brutes coming at you from the other platform (like the one Johnson's on). And repeat this method throughout the level. If you want when he comes up throught the gravity beam you can swipe him with your sword (his sheild must be down) but watch this can send you flying off solid ground (i.e you die) As for ammo there is plenty of it: Back in the Room past the Banshee The Brutes that come every 4th hit The Elites that come every 7 minutes Bottom Floor (Carbine inside Covenant Ammo Box) Middle Floor (Carbine inside Covenant Ammo Box) Top Floor (Carbine inside Covenant Ammo Box) Note1. The Plasma Rifles work, but oly on Easy and Normal. I'm not so sure about Heroic Note2. I did this in about 1hr 45mins PS make sure Tartarus stays away from your Banshee as he can destroy it (Although he doesn't touch it when you're inside) [Edited on 11/29/2004 7:53:05 AM]

Wow, cant believe anyone hasnt used the "easy way" to beat him (other than the banshee). Okay, here goes. When the you kill his body guards and he jumps across... don't follow him. Just chill, make sure you have 72 rounds in your carbine and dual plasma rifles. If you dont then turn your sorry butt around and go back into the room where you slaughtered all those brutes and stock up. Okay, now chill; with Sarge for a min and observe your surroundings... you have 4 platforms rotating arounf the center. 2 low and 2 high... one of the high platforms has 343 GS flying around it (keys is standing on that one and 343 is talking to her, hence his interest in that platform. What you need to do is jump onto one of the lower platforms until it takes you to the higher platform (the one without keys, if you get on the one with keys the brutes WILL kill you because they shoot at her almost the entire time.) Once on the platform, explore it a little... notice how you can get behind the pillar that holds it up and it cover4s you from any enemies that are shooting at you from the center platform. Now brutes will be coming pretty steadily but dont worry about them unless they are shooting at you, if they are just chill behind the column and wait to hear 3 shots from sarge and then cloak and pop out and see it sarge dropped Tartar sauces' shields. If so load some rounds into him and get back behind your cover. Eventually some Elites will jump into the fight... when this happensa shoot the crap out of tartarus and any brutes that you can with a plasma rifle, not matter that his shields are up, it just keeps him distracted so your elites can wipe out the brutes that keep pinning you down. When they are all done you dont have to use the cover, cloak, shoot method. You can just chill, wait for his shields to drop and pump him full of rounds. It took me about 3 tries and about 30 minutes to beat him this way. The only time I would die would be because I would get antsy and jump into the fight.

the thing that worked for me is exactly what has been said before (gungie I believe). Just make sure you keep Tartarus in front of Johnson, so Johnson can get two (!) clean shots at him. He won't shoot thrice on legendary. Then fire a couple of rounds with the carbine, reload, take the shields down with two or three more shots and empty your clip. One last thing about the plasma grenades, they're very effective, but when I beat him some plasma nades just went straight through him and didn't stick to him. They still had a large enough damage radius, but didn't do maximum damage. Hope you don't get that glitch. The way to take out the brutes is simply hit & run, but that's been said before as well. Just him 'em with a sword, hide, go invisible, and take out the next one. It took me about 50 carbine rounds, 2 plasma grenades (direct hits that is), and 12 brute shot grenades to take Tartarus out. One last word of advice: Be patient!! It took me 4 hours as well before I found all of this out.
-
well i found that the must fun way to kill him on ledgendary issss..... at the start just throw a frag grenade between all the brutes and that gets rid of all of them.... then give johnson your best weapon... or a machine gun or sumthin good... (not the sniper rifle)... He has unlimited ammo for any weapon he has and doesnt need to reload (and hes invincible by the way)... all you have to do is get johnson right up to tartarus and watch him unload clip after clip at him... (and getting fairly beaten at the same time) you just attach a few plasma grenades to his back.... and after a while of you and johnson malling him... voila... hes dead... it kinda takes a while...
Posted by: Gungie net
Now, as you're running back, make sure you have particle rifle selected. This could take a bit of practice, but what you want to do is swap the particle beam with one of the Elite's energy swords. Because it has unlimited energy against Tartarus.
Eh? Why not just pick up one of the three or four that get left when Tartarus splats all the elites? Why the need for a particle beam to swap and tricky things? All you people who have Johnson actualy take down his shield are bastards, because it would have saved me a lot of tedious trial and error. I spent lots of time on this and it didn't happen once. Why the difference?
Oops, looks like I forgot to explain that bit. You want to swap your beam rifle with another Elite because, not only are you guarunteed a fresh energy sword (useful if attacking the brutes in the centre doesnt exactly go to plan), but sometimes the Elite will stay alive for a while and help take Tartarus's shields down. And for goodness sakes, it's easy enough to knock out the brutes than to attack them with the banshee.

Ok all these sound absolutely lovely but i had the same trouble and NONE of this helped me ages ago, this is my opinion of how to kill him: 1)BE PREPARED! to those who laugh at saying "take a banshee" dont, it helps getting rid of the other brutes fast and ONLY the other brutes it does nothing to tartar sauce (tartarus) a beam rifle aswel also helps. 2)CARBINE CITY! the carbine is the easiest thing to kill him with. "it runs out so fast and there is little of it" BUZZZZ WRONG! there is boxes with 2 guns in each: before the control room (one with the funky floor), 2 the main level of the disc and one on the other 2 levels of the disc thats not "a limited amount" 3)PANSIE BOY!!! get in close, the carbine does more damage if your real close to him (not too close but at least smelling distance... actually no, that would be the start), you should be able to be infront of him and not be swung at at close range, to a degree. 4)FREE PARKING! at the start of the level get the banshee (before following tartar sauce onto the discs) and park it up on the top disc behind a pillar so he doesn't knock it out of his way (whoopsie!). This will make it easy access for when the lackeys come out (careful to move around alot) This allowed me to finish the last level on LEGENDARY..... now if only i had enough time to finish the rest of the game on legendary, lol.
-
I spent about 2 hours on him so i know how you feel. dual wield brute plasma rifles. stay on middle level and stay an ok distance from him and when his shiled go down pump him full of plasma. when the brutes come up top level and try to lure him up there or otherwise kill the other brutes from the the top level(preferably with the carbine. when the brutes are dead again go back to middle level and pump him full of plasma till he dies. not that you have to contantly pump him full of plasma about 6 or more times before he dies. goo luck.

Five and a half hours! You must suck. Just playing, but this part is one of the easiest parts on legendary. This is the easiest way too. Once you learn how to do this, you probably won't get hurt after the first part when theres 4 brutes. Make sure you have a Brute Shot with at least 4 greandes (just 4) and a Carbine. When the lvl starts, begin moving backwards, then shoot the Brute shot at the 2nd brute from the left 4 times in the chest, and he'll die, and the guy on his left should die or fall off the side. If not get out the carbine and shoot him, then shoot the other two if you want but the Elites will probably kill him. Then jump down to the 2nd lvl platform, switch your carbine for two brute plasma rifles, and just run around and avoid the guy with shields. Let the Sarge shoot him with the beams 3 times, and if he doesnt have his shield, blast him with the dual PRs until they burn and then run away from him. I just circle around those holes that let you drop down to the 3rd lvl, and jump to the other side if he gets close, and run away if he jumps at you. When the Brutes come, get the Big brute distracted, take out one of them with the PRs and sneak around behind one of those walls, and sneak up behind them and melee their backs, then if one sees you, dual weild the other PR again and split his wig, or hide for a while and then kill him. Be careful the hammer guy might sneak up behind you. Then keep repeating until the big guy is dead. The Brutes are really dumb on this level, they just stand there and look around. Also if you dont kill them all and you kill the hammer guy, they will be in the movie after you kill the hammer guy, just walking around (they dont try to kill the Sarge or Keyes's daughter). If you can't win on legendary this way then just stop playing Halo 2. Dont even play on easy.

hehe, you can say bastards but not s exual!

i find the best way is to let your guys rush him, while johnson picks him off. Johnson DOES take him shields down i did it last night. when he does, stay on the platform and pick him off with a carbine when his shields are down. When you run out of ammo, go down there and slash him with your energy sword when his sheilds drop.
-
to beat tartarus on legendary is pretty simple, it just takes time. use the grav lift to go to the top level and simply wait for johnson to take down his shield. when his shields are down use the carbine to shoot tartarus. wen his brute friends decide to join in the battle u can either wait for ur reinforcements to arrive or take them out 1 by 1. if u run out of carbine ammo use the dual plasma rifles to kill tartarus. although this tactic seems wussy like its really safe and easy to do. and if he jumps on the grav lift to go to the top lvl just hide from him LOL, he goes down eventually.

I laugh at all who say "Use a banshee". Before entering the fight, I went back and picked up full ammo for a brute shot, and a fully charged particle rifle (the covenant sniper). Make sure you then have at least 1 plasma grenade before entering the fight. When you enter, watch the cutscene if you want, and then walk towards the brutes and Tartarus. Before you get too close, throw a plasma grenade at the second brute from the left, turn and run. With a bit of luck, you'll have finished off all of the brutes there. Now, as you're running back, make sure you have particle rifle selected. This could take a bit of practice, but what you want to do is swap the particle beam with one of the Elite's energy swords. If there ARE any brutes left at this stage, just take them out with a single melee attack from the brute shot. Now, why did you want the energy sword? Because it has unlimited energy against Tartarus. Jump over to the battle area, and wait where Tartaru can see you, but also where Johnson can have a clear shot. Now the rest is easy. Wait for Johnson to take down Tartarus's shields, with a little bit of taunting Tartarus for fun (let him get close and attack, but dodge the attack). If you are CERTAIN that all three of Johnson's shots will hit, move towards Tartarus, and attack with the energy sword AS SOON as his shields are down. When the brute waves arrive, use the energy beam to raise to the upper level, go to the edge, and cloak. Now you just have to sneak behind a brute, hit him in the head with the brute shot, and repeat with the others. If, however, you are not near Tartarus when Johnson takes down his shields, then the brute shot is handy here. Powerful, and with range. Now just repeat until he's dead. This may take a few times to complete, but I have done it on Legendary. It does work. I even managed to attack Tartarus with the energy sword while escaping from him into the energy beam. Going down the energy beam is pretty funny.
