A Guide to The Last Word in PvE

So I just bought TLW yesterday but I'm presumptuous enough to already give out advice on how to use it. That's because I see a lot of ignorant reviews on this forum that can be easily disregarded by giving the weapon a fair analysis. I'll be focusing on PvE where a lot of people say that TLW is useless or sub-par. I think that this is largely due to confusion about how the weapon is most effectively played as well as its actually very steep learning curve. Just because you see people calling the gun "full auto" does not mean that it should be used like an auto rifle. TLW should not be used for suppressive fire or overwhelming mobs with a flurry of bullets. It doesn't have the clip or reload for that. TLW is hand cannon that ought to be played like a hand cannon (one shot precisions on weaker enemies while controlling a mid-range distance) until you are ready to use its special abilities on priority targets. The main distinction between TLW and other hand cannons is its ability to deal a violent spike of damage in a short time. This ability can be played conservatively or aggressively. When playing conservatively, you control mobs until a dangerous enemy manages to get too close, then you forget about aiming down the sights and unload a clip in him from the hip. The bonus damage and rate of fire ought to rip him apart, at which point you can get back to aiming down sights and picking off mobs at your safe distance. With this playstyle TLW gives a reliable "panic button" for immediate threats. Toughness and Battle Recovery are the most important attributes here since the point is to be able to stand your ground. When playing aggressively, you prioritize targets yourself and maneuver to flank them and shut them down with hip fire at the earliest opportunity, leaving only the easier enemies to clean up. This is a high risk high reward strategy that requires a good sense of crowd control (anybody who plays Ninja Gaiden on Master Ninja take note) - you don't just run into a crowd and shoot your guy. You have to be aware of all enemy sight lines and abilities. The most important attributes here are Agility and Battle Recovery so that you can get around and recover quickly when you hit cover. I mentioned that this gun has a steep learning curve. The highest damage it can deal is precision shots from the hip. This is not easy to do, even with its perks. You don't have much (any?) aiming assist when fireing from the hip, so it's all on your skill to line up that circle to give you the best shot at a precision hit when that Reaver Captain is rushing you. Its 8 shots and marginal reload speed are not forgiving on missed shots. This is a gun that rewards practice and talent to reach its full potential. It can be used effectively with any class. Here are some suggestions: Warlock: For Voidwalker builds Blink and the 'Surge' modifier on Energy Drain can give you fantastic mobility and even increased reload speed to help with the aggressive playstyle. For Sunsinger builds Flame Shield can make you tougher when tackling your targets and Solar Wind can give you extra shots on tough enemies rushing you (I think - haven't experimented with this too much). Angel of Light can give you advantageous angles of attack that no other class can manage. Radiant Skin can turn you into a godly tank and of course Fireborn makes you quite the avenger. Titan: For Defenders using the melee modifier that gives you blistering fast reload can really help your dps, especially since you'll have a strong shield at the time. Weapons of light would also probably be really ridiculous with this gun and mobs closing in. Use it with Saint-14 if you have it. Strikers can enjoy going Juggernaut to close distance for their damage spikes. Hunter: Arguably the class that provides the most valuable buffs for TLW. Gunslingers get that extra stability and reload speed with precision kills. Throwing Knife lets you pick off enemies when you run out of bullets. Bladedancer lets you turn invisible to flank targets. Also has Blink to get around. So there we have it. I hope this helps some people get the most out of this gun. But most importantly, have fun with it! Criticism welcome.
