I would like to know of it is offensive to Americans when someone in a fireteam party says "Merica!" or refers to one as a "Murican". And not also when playing Destiny but also in this forum. I am not from the U.S. so I would like to know.
Last night doing the raid one party member blew himself up by firing a rocket launcher directly inside a Titan's shield, and when he laughed someone else said "...that's not funny...it may be to you because you hail from Murica!"... and I thought that was funny but did not laugh because silence ensued. Everyone kept quiet about it.
So is it an offense? The internet tells me Americans like to joke about it too, but I dont know if its the same as being called a bitch or an idiot.
Any thoughts?

I don't see the problem. Americans do like to joke about it. But I personally do not understand how someone blowing themselves up has anything to do with America.
-
It's a big place, but it seems like the rest of the world thinks the United states consists of Texas, California, Louisiana, and New York.
-
The next time I blow myself up with a rocket or my own trip mine (again), I'm going to say "Murica". Should definitely lighten the mood.
-
Nope. Its fun being the class clown of nations.
-
No its not offensive nor is it just for doing something "violent and destructive" it's not something everyone (especially if they're not from the states) will get and it is rather hard to explain I guess. But if used to deliberately insult someone for being American then yeah I'm sure the fact that they are being a target for insults alone, just because they're American, will make it offensive.
-
Most Americans can take a joke. Honestly just have to feel out the vibe of the party. My friends and I joke about that all the time but we come across people who actually get offended then boot them and find new people to play with lol
-
It isn't offensive as much as it is just a meme. I suppose people could be offended by it for some odd reason, but it is just a joke at the way Pres. George W. Bush used to pronounce it himself. So if they are offended by that, then they have some other issues to deal with.
-
Like many other things, it's funny in jest...but not as an insult. Like other things I'm sure there is a fine line sometimes.
-
I will tell you, being in the military, this is not offensive at all. It's used quite frequently as a "good morning" message durning a salute. Why? Cuz 'Merica, that's f-bloop-ing why.
-
Its hard to offend whats possibly one of the most diverse countries in the world. It was silent because it wasn't all that funny. Its something you say with friends because you know it makes you sound like an idiot. Aside from that, its a term we use to make fun of people with extreme ethnocentrism in America. A good majority of this country is made up of Pessimists who dislike living here by my observation. So, no its not offensive, it just makes you look like a foreign asshole if you're the only one laughing.

Edited by Swiftlock: 11/14/2014 6:28:48 PMMeh. I'm used to it, being a 'Murican myself. It's come to a point where most foreigners think all Americans are obese, greedy, selfish beings while the nation itself is sole reason for all the problems in the universe and that the world would be totally fine if the USA never existed. It's pretty much the norm nowadays, like jeans. Seriously, I can't remember the last time I met someone from another country who had something sincerely NICE to say about America. Now THAT would certainly catch me off guard.

Edited by Dovahkrunk: 11/14/2014 6:29:15 PMIt is to me but I'm not about to break someone's nose from it. Not THAT big a deal, but the implied insults are there. The lack of an 'A' means what, I'm too rednecky to include it if I'm from the South? That's what it seems like. Also, the fact that it's that one-word statement implies that we all have super ego's and yell it in everyone's faces. If you're asking for real, seriously. If you weren't being serious, enjoy the anti-US insults below me. I'm from the North, maybe the perspective differs from all over.
-
It's funny, but I probably wouldn't have laughed at that particular joke. But not because I'd be offended. I don't know, maybe I just had to be there. Most Americans are not offended by people saying 'merica, and we joke all the time about it.

Edited by IRONHATE: 11/14/2014 6:22:16 PMThis post could use some more freedom! #murica
-
Nope, not at all
-
As an American, I'm free to point out our flaws and laugh about them a little. I also have a pretty good sense of humor, so, no I don't find it offensive in the slightness.
-
Eh, I don't care. Its just a joke. I mean damn, some of the stuff we do is stupid. Why not joke about it once in a while?
-
Lol, no, not at all.
-
not offensive at all.
-
Edited by Trando: 11/14/2014 6:13:32 PMNah, not offensive, just like if someone calls me something "racist". I laugh it off, life's too short to take "insults" seriously.
-
If someone not from the US called me a "'Murican" and said "'Merica", frankly, I would laugh my ass off. Not offensive at all.
-
USA #1! If you don't love it, leave it. 'MURRICA!
-
Hahahahaha.. I would of been laughing my fking FACE off lolololol
-
MURICA!!!

If someone in my fireteam cant take couple jokes during raid, gtfo. Thats what makes raiding still duable. Talking with friends and making fun of eachother.
