Is this offensive to you?
I would like to know of it is offensive to Americans when someone in a fireteam party says "Merica!" or refers to one as a "Murican". And not also when playing Destiny but also in this forum. I am not from the U.S. so I would like to know.
Last night doing the raid one party member blew himself up by firing a rocket launcher directly inside a Titan's shield, and when he laughed someone else said "...that's not funny...it may be to you because you hail from Murica!"... and I thought that was funny but did not laugh because silence ensued. Everyone kept quiet about it.
So is it an offense? The internet tells me Americans like to joke about it too, but I dont know if its the same as being called a bitch or an idiot.
Any thoughts?

2 RepliesWhen I work with 90% idiots (meaning they dropped out of high school as freshmen) And they all love the term "Muricah" I tend to hate it. I see it as a bash on overall american intelligence. As of someone called a black person "the N word" in a derogatory way.

Nah, not really. As long as you keep it friendly, it's not a big deal. It's kind of like calling a new zealander a kiwi, or implying the English have bad teeth.

As an American I'm not offended by the term Merica. I know too many people that use the joke too much to the point it's sort of overdone to the point it's not that funny anymore. I would be sort of annoyed if it was a Non-American that said that though. Sounds like a dumb move so I wouldn't like it being implied it's an American thing to do. People from all sorts of nationalities do stupid things like shoot rockets into a bubble shield, not just Americans, just like there are plenty of non-idiots of all sorts of nationalities. I think if anyone would be offended it'd be about that, not the fact the term Mercian was used.

Nah man, it's all good. In a sense it's just a meme. Doesn't really have a specific connotation on it unless specific individuals hate it.

I'm American and I don't find it offensive. I do, however, think it makes the person saying it sound like a complete and utter moron. Seriously, it's suppose to be an insult but really it just sounds like the speaker is too stupid to know how to pronounce a word. As far as insults go... it's a FAIL

It's offensive in this context, as it's meant to be an insult by a non-American. It's like saying "You find it funny that you died from your own rocket because you are an idiot that hails from a country full of idiots." That being said, it's a term that sometimes can be used in jest, for example, if that teammate had instead blown up a large number of enemies with a single rocket, shouting "'Murica! -blam!- yeah!" can be a battle-cry of sorts, as if to say "I'm awesome, and I love explosions, like all Americans!" In either case, it's a stereotype of Americans and as such is offensive to the labeled demographic as a whole. Not all Americans are suicidal idiots who think any and all stupidity is hilarious.

I don't see the problem. Americans do like to joke about it. But I personally do not understand how someone blowing themselves up has anything to do with America.
