Please Bump if you agree with this, or leave a comment if you have suggestions to improve this system.
Edit: Updated 2: cost of raid armor items. as per suggestions from a few people. Remember it's tokens per week. You cannot earn all tokens in one week.
Deej, I hope you read this suggestion and pass it on to the developers. I'd love to hear your feedback on this proposal.
The idea is that your character level reflects more of your skill and less of RNG luck. Yes, RNG is an integral part of this game, but reaching level 30 shouldn't be purely based on how lucky you are at getting one piece of gear. I understand that RNG is essential in loot based games to keep the game interesting and repayable. I'm NOT asking you to take away RNG. I'm asking you to help balance out the effect of RNG for those who are skilled *AND* have put in substantial time in the game but are STILL unlucky with RNG.
In a nutshell, something like Strange Coins but is specific to the Vault of Glass raid and have lots of conditions on how you earn them etc. Please read on if you're interested.
The raid tokens are handed out like this. If you complete:
A. The Sync plate phase - You get 1 raid token
B. Templar phase - You get 2 raid tokens only if you got token from phase A.
C. Gatekeeper phase - You get 3 raid tokens only if you got tokens from phase B.
D. Atheon phase - You get 4 raid tokens only if you got tokens from phase C.
If you successfully do the entire raid i.e. A to D, you will be guaranteed a total of 1+2+3+4 = 10 raid tokens (read caveats below though). The reason for increasing tokens in each phase is: firstly; Further incentive to complete the raid and secondly, Rewarded for increasing difficulty of the phases with more tokens.
Raid tokens will (for now) ONLY let you buy Raid Armor sets. It will *NOT* let you buy raid weapons like Vex Mythoclast, Fatebringer, Vision of Confluence etc. These weapons will continue to remain RNG drops the way it is. Reason being gear is vital to partaking in certain activities in the game , specific weapons are not a requirement or must have.
Cost of Vault of Glass raid gear (subject to change): feel free to add your suggestions to this.
Raid Chest Piece: 20 raid tokens
Raid Boots: 20 raid tokens
Raid Gloves: 20 tokens
Raid Helmet: 30 tokens
Some caveats:
1. Raid tokens will only be dropped when you start each phase (A through D) AND complete the phase with the same character. So if you do phase A with your Warlock, then switch to your Hunter before starting phase B and you complete phase B with your Hunter, you will NOT receive any tokens as you did not complete phase A with your Hunter.
2. Raid tokens are NOT transferable through the Vault, you cannot get raid tokens and then transfer them to other characters.
3. Raid tokens are specific to the Vault of Glass raid. You cannot use them for future raid content.
4. Raid tokens cap out to 90 tokens (i.e. cost of a complete raid gear set) per character. You can always buy raid gear with raid tokens and dismantle them for shards, and thereby converting tokens to shards if you wish to do so.
5. Raid token progress, is reset each week. So if you got raid tokens from phase B at the weekly reset, you can receive tokens from phase A to D again.
6. Raid tokens are an additional drop. It will NOT remove existing RNG raid armor drops. It is thus totally possible you get one or two pieces with RNG and after earning enough tokens you can buy the remaining pieces.
Edit: to those wondering this isn't for my personal benefit. I'm already level 30 as I got everything but the helmet within 6 or 7 runs of the vog raid but I feel I've been incredibly lucky seeing how many times others have run it without getting anything.

The drop rate at CE has been fantastic

Holy hell, bump this!
It'd give people a reason to do the raid more than once per character per difficulty.
2 RepliesTokens can be turned in for planet-specific resources maybe?
-
No doubt. Bump. The Raid is still very challenging whether you've done it already this week or not! There should always be some reward, and I think your idea is a step in the right direction
-
Yes it's better than luck to rank up. Leveling up is important so can't be luck based......
-
Yes, bump. Activision and Bungie have a plan to stretch out the game with gimmicks rather than content so, it has to work for their profit plan as well. This looks like a system they could use. It would make gamers much happier if 30 was a sign of skill rather than a sign of luck.

1 ReplyYes please, they really really need something like this, they could even make it similar to how IB works, if you don't get any gear it gives you a raid medallion instead, collect 25 medallions to get a piece and only allow you to hold 30 at a time. Honestly I'm up for ANY form of a way to get the gear other than RNG.

Bump! Was just talking to co-workers about an idea like this. Well put together.

Edited by IMADAJ: 11/22/2014 2:30:48 AMBump Every other drop in this game, from commons to exotics, have a currency tied to them helping combat the downswings of standard deviation. All raid drops should have a currency tied to them too. Have cost correlate to the drop chance.

1 ReplyIf they do it like final fantasy; you get 50 myth tomes per phase of raid except puzzle phases ( gorgons). So pretty much every time you beat a boss. You get 200 a week. (100 should be fine for this game) And the cheapest raid piece was 350 tomes, but since you cap at 200 u need two weeks to get it, but at least it guaranteed. So in this game the raid can drop raid marks per phase. (Save the gorgons) and doing hard would double the marks you get, since it counts as normal too You grind that while getting loot and if rng likes you, then you use raid marks to buy gear to dismantle or use if it's better than your current gear
-
5 RepliesI agree, it took three weeks at the vault just for me to get something other than the damn gauntlets.
-
1 ReplyI would honestly rather they do away with material rewards altogether (save for the odd chest perhaps) since while they're a pain, they can be farmed outside of the Raid. Raid gear however can only be gotten once a week in the bloody raid, and so they should just make all the drops nothing but raid gear. They can always be dismantled for materials if you get multiple copies anyway, and the potential loot pool is large enough that you won't get everything in a week or 2 but it would reduce a lot of the frustration knowing you always have a decent shot at getting what you want. Not a guarantee, but a good chance.

Have a bump.
