Any Vanilla WoW Veterans?

While I didn't start playing until an expansion later, I've heard that Destiny now and the first iteration of WoW had similar problems with loot drops, Raid queues, et cetera. Do you think its similar at all? Because if so, Destiny can only get better...

  •
Do you think its similar at all?
First WoW subscription date: January 2005 and no, there is no comparison. Anyone comparing current Destiny to modern WoW either didn't play Vanilla Warcraft or are looking back through rose colored goggles. Let me tell you a story about my then mage. There was a trinket in the then Upper Blackrock Spire from a rare spawn that was probably one of the best trinkets available until tier 2 raiding. Windywood Reed, I want to say it was. I knew it dropped from one specific boss, in one specific place. I wasn't killing random mobs outside of Undercity hoping for a lockbox that may (or may not) contain the trinket. I could set a goal and work towards achieving that goal, whether it be farming UBRS for that boss for the trinket or grinding Argent Dawn rep so I could get "free" Naxxramas 40 attunement. Story wise, again, no comparison. Warcraft had the RTS story to build upon and even if you weren't into the RTS prior to playing Warcraft the game gave players 8 playable races with their own unique starting areas and 1-20ish quest lines before converging into the larger world and distilling down into two end game story arcs that led into the first set of raiding. Yes, it was told entirely through text, but the story lines in vanilla Warcraft would have filled a novel and made Destiny's entire story and Grimoire cards look like a notepad. Raid queues? There were no queues for raids, you had to gather 40 people. As a former guild officer, it was a nightmare but mostly because of interpersonal squabbles. Otherwise, it was fairly easy to get people together for 40 man raids (or 20 man raids once Zul'Gurub was added). Ten years later and I still have fond memories of helping people with their Onyxia attunement questline in Stormwind City (and later in Orgrimmar). Ten years later and I still have great memories of the Ahn'Qiraj war gates event and helping my then guild get one of our guildmates the Scepter so he could ring the gong. I'm still ridiculously protective of my vanilla Warcraft PVP titles (Warlord, Legionnaire, and Knight-Captain [mage, shaman, rogue], respectively). I really don't see the same being true for Destiny even a year after release, say nothing of ten.

  • Yep, I had a Ret paladin... And we all knew how much people dismissed those before the overhaul in Wrath. Sadly I don't play no more but those days were fun and it was kinda funny to be a rare retribution pally.

      • Vanilla WoW did not have raid queues. You either knew a large group of people to raid with or were part of a guild that had enough to raid. And raiding was a second job because of what it took for forty people to beat it. Each boss always dropped good loot but either everyone rolled on it (problem b/c a rogue could roll on a mage-only item, win it, and it was bound to the rogue character so no other toon, including the rogue-owner's alts, could use it) or the raid leader picked master loot, he got it, and then other people rolled and it was given to them. Loot drops got much better over time. Anyone here remember when First Aid was a primary profession and Tauren had plainsrunning?

        • Interesting that no one brings up the queue-monster and not being able to play for hours during prime time. I could relate that to Destiny server issues. I could also relate these forums to Barrens chat during vanilla days.

        • For the Alliance, btw. Say whatever else you want, at least Blizzard knows how to craft a story and characters that you care about. There were times in my life where the world of WoW felt more real than the real world. Destiny has none of that feels.

        • There's so many things that Blizzard has learned by trial and error in WoW over the years that Bungie should've observed and implemented from the start. Lack of raid matchmaking in 2014, for example, is unforgivable. Don't want to get randomed with people? Fine, don't use MM. But surfing forums for hours and then doing it time and time again when people leave is currently the hardest boss in VoG. At least in WoW you could do it in game in /trade...

        • World of Warcraft is the best game to ever be created. Not t mention Blizzard is a hell of alpt better at listening to their player base and making well thought out decisions about how they want to change their game. They also have an extensive testing process with their test realms. This game will never be anywhere near WoW.

As much as I hated WoW from day one, it had a shitload of content. Bad content, but content. I spent probably 6 months just exploring.

          • Not at all. I played since vanilla and it wasn't so random. The only difference was that you got to see what dropped and had better chances. Granted most loot systems went off the /roll rule which was a 1-100 for a piece of gear That was an also RNG, but The only problem was raiding with 39 other people. It all depended on how many of the same class joined you in the raid for the same loot. If you were in a guild it was known as guild/officer loot. Guild loot used DKP which stood for points for every boss kill you were a part of. You'd pretty much bid on an item using DKP. Officer loot was based on your experience and how well you could carry your roll in the raid. Officers within the guild would hand out the loot if they thought you deserved it. Raid ques were nonexistent but it did however take a while to form one. Being either a 20 person raid or a 40 person raid. I actually think wow was a lot better before wrath of the lich king expansion. Yes wotlk had some great content but the game fell shortly after making it too easy to play/raid. The one thing I enjoyed about wow was world pvp and old content raids.

          • was a vanilla wow player to the max. was able to quit and detox over a few months. that being said. Destiny has way more economical and mechanical problems than WoW ever did. Those need to be fixed before queues/loot/etc can be compared..

I've never had more fun in a video game than I did during BC. No game can even compare. Oh man those were the days. I didn't have a max toon until BC so I can't comment on vanilla. Sadly it's gone nowhere but downhill since then.

                • There were no Raid queues in Vanilla WoW. Just 40 guild people trying to get along while we stop every 4 minutes for Pally Blessing re-buffs (as it took 1 minute to buff everyone individually). Then months later, you finally see a set piece drop for your class and hope you have enough DKP to win it. If not, wait for possibly another month...

                  • Not similar in any way. VoG could be pugged after week one. Molten core required 40 people who treated wow as a second job, raiding 5-6 nights a week, with shared loot drops, for weeks on end as you slowly geared up your members. Your drops in destiny are your own. This alone is a fundamental difference between the two games and really it's silly trying to compare them
