So some friends and I were discussing the Gjallarhorn last night and we pretty much all pronounced it a different way. Their opinion was that the J is silent and pronounced as a soft H and I feel like they are willfully ignoring the J. When typed into Google Translate it says that Icelandic was detected and it pronounced both the G and the J. (Which I think is a point in my favor btw) However I do not profess to know the Icelandic language so I would like to see how other people pronounce it, therefore I thought I would bring it to the forums. If there is yet another way to pronounce it please feel free to post it in the comments.
=)
Edit: Thanks everyone (well almost) for posting. I don't know much about the Norse mythology being of latin descent, so I really liked hearing from those who are in the know. I also highly enjoyed most of the rest of the answers. It's interesting to see how different peoples interpret/pronounce the same word. If I were going by my own known rules for languages, the "LL" would have been the "Y(ish)" sound. So thanks again for being helpful, this community isn't as bad as a lot of people think. =)
And due to one of the early posts that made us laugh we all have decided to henceforth call it the "Yolohorn" just to be dicks. So thanks for that too. 8D
3 RepliesEdited by Sovereign Man: 2/25/2015 8:32:17 PMRefer to the Planet Destiny podcast #5 on youtube, at the very beginning. An Icelandic fellow pronounces it correctly. Trust me, we've ALL been pronouncing it incorrectly.....like, not even close.

2 RepliesIf you check out Planetdestiny's most recent podcast(number5 i believe) they have someone of icelandic decent or something say gjallerhorn correctly. Its pretty difficult to say let alone type so i guess it would be better for u guys to go watch it

8 RepliesEdited by syllynyss: 2/23/2015 7:40:13 AMSo it's Icelandic. It's Nordic, and Iceland is very much Nordic. The guy in the video has an extensive explanation of all the history and crap to go along with the pronunciation. If that's too long for you, then just use Google Translate, set the left side to detect language, type in gjallarhorn and witness the truth. Edit: to listen to the pronunciation, skip to 3:40.

12 RepliesI love it when Americans start talking about how to pronounce foreign words. They can't even pronounce English words properly so why do they bother with foreign ones?
-
Its pronounced gat-la-horn, don't believe me? Go watch planet destiny's 4th or so podcast, a fluent speaker of the language told us the correct pronunciation

3 RepliesJust looked it up because I was getting tired of this. In English, the combinations dj, gj, hj, and lj are all pronounced like j in Swedish, and are pronounced like a "y" In English. Call it what you will, but it is supposed to be pronounced Yallarhorn

9 RepliesEdited by WessMachine: 2/25/2015 10:09:26 PMAll 3 are wrong... It's Yal-Ar-horn. Norse mythology bros and broets. A horn used to symbol the pending ragnarok to the norse gods

6 RepliesYA-LA-HORN. Actually =)

Ga-la-horn. J and r are silent

1 ReplyAll 3 options you give are completely wrong. It is "yahl-lahr-hawrn". The word is of Nordic origin, and would have been in the Old Norse dialect at the time which has it pronounced like that. Planet Destiny had some guy speaking Icelandic try to give it a different pronunciation, but he claimed that everyone would have said it the same, which is wrong. There were literally half a dozen different dialects in that area at the time, where Bungie takes the name 'Gjallarhorn' would have been referencing the pronunciation I posted above. You don't call a car a care or a coor, it's a car. That's the way it's pronounced. The word can be the same in different languages, but different dialects will say it differently. This is the proper pronunciation. The guy in the video was also making fun of the pronunciation of "Asgard", which in the Thor movies and what not is in fact being pronounced based on the dialect the word originated from, and is pertaining to.

4 RepliesIs Gjallarhorn the only weapon you can't swap between characters ? I was surprised that I can place all my weapons in the vault except ole jallar!

I believe Ted Mosby explains it in an episode of how I met your mother. Yallerhorn is the correct pronunciation apparently. Still gal-a-horn to me lol.
