UPDATE January 7th: Because this is still getting a lot of views and the original was essentially a rant, I've replaced it with a much easier to follow outline of the bug. Bungie comments and responses are located at the bottom. A (kind of) workaround is included.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What is the bug?
* Reduces the available ammo of a given weapon or weapon type.
How long has this been around?
* Since game launch.
When does it trigger?
* Death (technically, respawning AFTER death).
* Going to orbit.
* Returning from orbit.
* Cutscenes.
What makes it trigger?
* Any item with the buff to increase the amount of ammo you can carry of a particular type.
* Rocket launchers with a bonus to tube size as a perk.
Methods I have used to test.
* Equipping the item / using a synth and killing myself.
* Gathering ammo legitimately and killing myself.
* Multiple death types (suicide/jumping off cliffs and NPC death).
Results of testing
* With items this has reduced ammo 100% of the time, without them it has never reduced ammo. This is not an intermittent bug, it is extremely easy to reproduce and should be a priority to fix.
*All tests were performed with the items of the type equipped then tested again without them. Each test has been performed at maximum ammo capacity and at varying levels of ammo. Results did not change.*
Items I have personally tested with and witnessed the bug
* Lucky Raspberry (Heavy ammo increase)
* Crest of the Alpha Lupi (Special ammo increase)
* Hezen Vengeance (Tube size increase from 2 to 3)
* Iron Regalia Boots (Increases scout rifle ammo)
* Various other items with the same buffs. Results unchanged and the above are my 'go to' testing set.
Update post-DLC - I have retested with Dark Beyond armor. Bug still exists
Ammo types I have tested and seen reduced
All of them.
Workaround
* Items with the 'Field Scout' perk turned on are not effected by the bug - this seems to only work for certain weapons. I have not found a rocket launcher that it works for.
* The actually loss of ammo seems to occur when you spawn/are revived. Therefore if you have time (such as dying in a hard mode raid) then you can avoid losing ammo by switching out the items that provide the buff before you are ressed.
Other observations
* With rocket launcher tube size increase, the ammo drops until you are down to 2 (thus the bonus isn't active)
* With special/heavy increases the ammo drops until 1 rocket/minimal machine gun ammo
* With primary ammo it seems it only drops to a certain amount then stops, however when you respawn in any situation it seems you are given a certain amount of primary ammo to start with. This seems to be the threshold and is possibly just offsetting the bug. No way for me to confirm this.
This bug has been acknowledged by Deej on the bungie forums in the past.
Yeah. Known bug. Unsure of status. I see you leaving a lot of good feedback on this forum, though.
After I posted the above on Reddit, Deej did again reply, offering the following:
As you have indicated in your original post, this is a known bug. I have no update on it's status. I'm sorry that you think we don't care. The fact of the matter is that I don't have any new information to provide at this time.
BUMP!

Bump P
-
Bump, thanks for the undeniable info.
-
Can't be fixed, they're too busy playing corn hole. No really in all seriousness, this bug has been around for way too long now.
-
-
I hope they fix this.
-
Mega bump. I avoid using gjallarhorn in raids for this reason. Corrective measure loses about 4 bullets from my 301 total.. beats having 2 rockets swiped!
-
This is one of the most frustrating bugs in the game. I don't understand how it's been known about for so damn long and nothing has been done about it.
-
Then don't rely on heavy ammo, look, Xur gave you an unlimited ammo sniper rifle for a reason, use it damn it!
-
So AWSOME it is official... Deej don't know shite, & he is a mushroom they have to keep us busy!
-
FYI Armamentarium is also affected, twice.
-
-
Haha remember all those kids. "Omg like Bungie wouldn't like maybe like put it in the game ughhh" gtfo -->
-
lol I know people here that thought it was intentional.

Edited by Contra Mundus: 1/22/2015 5:11:00 PMI've seen several people saying it's supposed to be that way. For some reason I suspect they did not read this fully. Either that or they think that yes you should be penalized for going to orbit after you've completed something or when a cutscenes occurs. I have been running into other ammo problems however. Yes I lose ammo but a problem I've been having is ammo dropping in the first place(key the person who says thats the juggle modifier). This happens to me even in patrol. It started with heavy ammo. What is odd is that after several successful super uses the stuff starts falling like rain. Lately however, it's been effecting my standard ammo as well. I'm using an auto rifle and despite the fact I'm carrying upwards of 900 rounds it's not uncommon for me to run out before I find any forcing me to use a synthesis, something I have never had to do in the past for standard ammo. This IS a bug and it seems to be getting worse not better. Also to address some other comments the ammo loss bug will take you down to zero ammo on heavy and has even done so when my ammo was full after quitting the game and returning later. I have ammo carry upgrades but not for heavy. In fact I have only ever had that modifier on a weapon. I no longer have any upgraded heavy ammo capacity but I still have the same problem. Edit: If I get kicked because of network issues on either end I lose all of my heavy ammo every time regardless of how much I had. This can be particularly annoying when you just used a synthesis.

Yes please fx! It's so annoying having to waste ammo synthesis during raids with randoms because they keep causing the team to wipe!! Each wipe costs me fúcking ammo and by the time we finally have shit down, I don't have heavy ammo for my Gjallarhorn to blast Atheon with -.-
-
Bump. This to me is much more important than Bungie's failed attempts at fixing the cheese. Should get priority.
-
Make sure your inventory has an open space if your inventory is full then it buges
-
Bump cause hard mode wipefests.

At the very least just let us know you are still at least looking at it! Or we assume you forgot :)
-
Agree and bump. Fix the freaking bug already you lazy developers
