I agree. There are times when I just joined a crucible and within one minute or a few second, I win the battle (even though I just joined and did nothing). For the reward, I got a legendary engram for 0 kills, 0 points, 0 death, 0 everything, basically. So yeah, did I earn the legendary engram? Not at all, it was randomly distribute. I just love how people think RNG is earned as well. xD The game rewards are really just random and mostly not earned (unless it is in a fixed position to be earned, like exotic weapon bounty). On the other hand, if farming for engrams (doesn't matter which), time is essentially important as well as skills because the probability of getting more engram is more likely than it is to spent 5 minutes farming. As far as I know, RNG is more focused in mission, crucible, raid, and strike, than it is to farming. However, farming is consider RNG too because sometimes, a "lucky" person shows up and shoot a few enemies and gets an engram. In one case, It actually took me over 30 minutes to have an enemy drop an engram for me when I was farming. Without doubt, RNG is not earning (for the very least, hard work is not required sometimes in order to get a "good" engram or engrams).
