I have wondered if we were gonna see a shrike like enemy from Hyperion. It makes me wonder if all these events are from the creation of AI and the darkness is like the AI god in Hyperion. The traveler is obviously some kind of machine so maybe the darkness is also.
The only thing I can't reconcile is where the separate factions come into play especially the vex. It means there are at least four factions of AI at war with each other.

I always just assumed that there was a Dark Traveler that created the Hive in the same way as the Traveler creates the guardians; except that since the Dark Traveler, is, well, dark...the Hive came back looking far more grotesque.

The Exo Stranger that appears is quite reminiscent of Moneta in Hyperion.
