So, the update just went live. Atheon can no longer be pushed off his platform. He'll also select people at random to be thrown across time. He's a real bastard, eh?
I talked a lot to the developers about your opinions on the matter. You don't want to be selected at random. You want to choose who gets to fetch the Relic under fire from those nasty Oracles. I spoke on your behalf. Your voice was heard. We discussed your concerns.
I even said "Why not just change Hard Mode and leave Easy Mode alone?"
I was told "The Raid is never supposed to be easy."
At that point, I recalled all the times I stood and delivered the line "...the most challenging encounter we've ever created." It was hard to disagree. As a veteran of Cairo Station on Legendary in Halo, I had to admit that I had been carried through the Raid like luggage assigned to my clan. I did my own carrying later, but carrying had been done.
This is an activity that was designed to be undertaken by a hardcore team that is ready and willing to adapt and improvise to changing battle conditions. Like the moment when the Templar shields random players, the Final Boss was supposed to be extremely dangerous. While we've been working on some of the other things for which you've been asking (i.e. better exotics, voice chat in matchmaking, more bounties), the designers who made the Raid have plugged the holes that you showed them.
If you got in on the ground floor of this thing, we thank you. If you understand the mechanics for how to beat Atheon, it's still a thing you can teach your friends. If you're all up to the challenge, the Raid is waiting for you.
Let's talk about it. Please sound off in this thread, and know that I'll be reading.

I don't mind Atheon can't be pushed anymore but the ignorance of the developers towards the random teleporting is an absolute insult towards a PvE community that already has every right to complain for lack of content and overall repetitiveness of the game! (not to mention the nerfs of weapons for PvP reasons) If the random teleporting was intended from the beginning then why wasn't it there from the beginning?! The answer is simpel and an even bigger insult to all: bad design and/or bad testing (including negative) and the sole reason why there are STILL multiple issues with the raid that have NOT been fixed with this patch. What about minotaurs instantly getting their shields back, what about the glitches in teleporting in general? And with the random teleporting; How to pick up new players and teach them? What about the ability to quickly swith primary that is almost required if you do not have a proper raid gun. What about the the random rewards? You think that we want to invest all the required time into the raid only to get another f*ching chatter white and some shards again and again? TLDR: I think the time for discussion is over Deej. I think you've just flushed the majority of your PvE community that already tried so hard just to like the game cause of the great potential it has. But it does not look like you or Bungie will bring anything other to the table than a slap into the face to us PvE players again and again plus develop the game only things we don't want and paid DLC which undoubtly will be as repetitive as everything else in Destiny. 3 RepliesIt sounds to me like you didn't communicate the core problem with this design decision (that has been stated many times by many players) which is not that it makes it more difficult, but that it negates strategic planning and nullifies the strengths of players and classes. Not everyone plays every roll well, that does not mean they should be excluded from this fight because of lazy design. This change means you can no longer take certain people with you on raids because while they may be excellent defenders, they suck with shield if they ever are called to take it up, or in hard mode they don't have the right weaponry to destroy oracles. You know, certain people like close friends who are the only reason some of us are still playing this game. The prior method allowed everyone to play a part in the battle and contribute properly, now they cross their fingers and hope not to die. Randomness is not about difficulty or skill, it is about annoyance and artificial, lazy gating mechanisms. There are much better, much more interesting ways to add difficulty that have been covered in games past and in original ideas from players on these forums. We don't care what the developers think about this decision at this point - that doesn't make it any more right or thoughtful of the longevity, interest, and enjoyment of the general population. And when you are selling a *game*, that's what's important. Go back to the developers - heck, go back to Activision leadership, and tell them if they continue to ignore the complaints of the players, and fail to take to heart some of the suggestions that have been made to add interest to the gameplay of destiny without alienating friends and family right out of the battle and into <insert major game release here>, this game has no future. Period.

Atheon's revenge is a monkey error bug unleashed on the community that kicks them out of PvP ;)

Thanks for communicating Deej. The developers seem hellbent on making it their way. Halo 2's first mission was a real tough one. Taught me the importance of plasma weapon advantages.

1 ReplyI wonder if Bungie will start listening to the community when people start leaving the game entirely. Some of my friends have already done so and have even let me know that they won't come back when the new content drops in December. Well Bungie, I guess you win. You get to force the game to be the way you want it but you are losing portions of your community. I have 280+ hours into this game now and still haven't hit 30 yet due to your poor reward system. I'm hanging on by a thread but there are other good games out now. I'm hoping you pull your head out of your ass before it is too late.
-
It's fine, but it's pretty much a lvl 30 entry requirement now I think. At least for those of us not in a dedicated raid clique.

Edited by Kilo: 10/28/2014 5:38:58 PMI was going to edit my post but I'm on mobile and can't find it. I originally said have it where only 1 person is guaranteed to be teleported every time if they were the 3rd farthest away. I thought of a better idea. It should change every time but in order from farthest to closest. So the first time the farthest gets teleported, next the 2nd farthest, then the 3rd, etc. That way if you want the same relic carrier you have to really pay attention.

"We heard you, the community that pays for the game. We chose to ignore you." There is no way that you can justify this "fix," especially in light of all the bugs in that fight that you have not fixed. Way to take strategy out of the Atheon encounter and make it more of just another one of your "DPS the boss while not doing to the adds" fights. Most of your patches have been good. Stop trying to talk yourselves into one that is bad. Stop trying to justify something that everyone obviously hates. Stop being stupid about this.

22 RepliesFor me it comes down to stated goals. The keyword being stated. If the raid initially worked with random teleports that would've forced everyone to learn the fight that way. But since it didn't work as, apparently, it was intended from the get go, teams strategized and formed roles based on what their strengths and weaknesses were. Now basically everyone on the raid team has to be at least a Jack of All Trades and Master of None rather than having the distinction of being an awesome Relic Man or Oracle Killer or Supplicant Sniper. Now apparently everyone needs to know how to be a quarterback, running back, tight end, defensive end, linebacker, etc. I just think it's completely counter intuitive. Will players adapt? Sure. Are the roles in the raid so hard that people can't figure them out? No. It's the principle of the thing. This is a videogame equivalent of Peppermint Patty moving the ball at the last minute so Charlie Brown falls hard. The textbook definition of "moving the goalposts".

Did you fix the vex mythoclast? Increasing difficulty while continuing to limit reward seems unjust.
-
I know that this is irrelevant to today's patch, but please don't nerf the Necrochasm in the upcoming DLC, the Darkness Below. If it becomes a glorified pea shooter there will be enough tears in the forums to create an entirely new ocean dubbed The Cry Baby Sea
-
The the number of people who will be bailing on Destiny to play The Master Chief Collection is going to be hilarious. #irony
-
Thank you for posting this DeeJ. Whether or not I agree with the changes is a topic for another discussion - now I just wanted to say thanks for the unexpected and seemingly honest insight you provided with regards to Bungies decision making process. I award you +1 Point for this pleasant surprise.
-
Random teleporting, increasing the difficulty of the raid overall is understandable. However Bungie could have timed the patches better than this. Nerfing our most preferred weapons, hinting at future buffs, then increasing the overall difficulty of the raid before those buffs are implemented is harsh and un-fun. I would have loved to shoot this new and improved Atheon with an equally new and improved Thorn, Bad Juju or Vex Mythoclast.

I personally don't have a problem with the update. It freshens things up and it'll make me feel more accomplished when I kill Atheon, but I feel like the devs forgot about this one piece of crucial thinking: what about the new raiders? People who haven't done the vault before? These people will have an even harder time finding a group now due to most peoples' lack of willingness to help them. I personally think it'll be a miracle if they ever manage to find a group. I'm just worried that it'll make the raid all that much more difficult for newcomers. Easiest think to fix it would be to do the random teleporting on Hard only. Then it'll be evened out.

Your local gamestop already has hundreds of used copies so you may want to return destiny before the trade in value drops more unless you are still enjoying the grind and in that case go ahead and spend your $35 on that dlc but I'm going to trade mine in and spend $20 for preorder on assassins creed or halo the master chief collection. Too many good games will come out before Christmas for me to spend countless hours wiping on hard Atheon cause that guy died in the relic clense bubble that is broken! Too bad bungie doesnt listen to paying customers this game really could have been something.

Quite honestly, everyone here whining about how the random teleports destroys strategy- it doesn't. Make a strategy where your team can communicate who went in, who will take the relic, and what portal to open, in a matter of a couple seconds. Yes, that is possible. For one, let's start with who takes the relic. Seeing as how 3 people are teleported of 6, half the team, and one of those 3 must take the relic, at least four people must be prepared to take said role. You can even decide priority of who takes the relic before the fight, where A has top priority, and will take the relic whenever teleported. B, if teleported, will quickly check if A was teleported, and if A was not, will take the relic. C will do the same, checking for A and B, so on so forth. Secondly, who went in. This is a quick one, whoever was teleported makes it known ASAP. If a person lacks a mic, the team should know beforehand and have others check for him/her. If the away team all lack mics, the home team can still quickly learn who through a quick look around. Thirdly, which portal? Just like who went in, a second's communication can solve that. Again, if the away team is without mics, you can check the mini-map for which portal to open, depending on the away team's position on the map. All three problems can be solved in no more than 2 to 5 seconds. Of course this assumes everyone knows every role in the raid, and before any of you complain about that- no, it's not a pain nor a lengthy process to learn or teach every role. If voice communication is available to your team, you can literally explain how to work every role in the raid with as little as one or two sentences for each role. Make sure everyone knows them beforehand. If your entire team has no voice communication at all, or at least some text chat with your team in preparation before the raid to make sure everyone has the know-how, I'd personally say you've little, if not no right to complain about strategy. Don't join a team full of randoms with no preparations expecting them to have the exact same plan in mind as you. And yes, i did lay out a whole strategy for Atheon- that has consideration for the random teleports- just to give a counter-arguement against those who claim the random teleports destroy any and all strategy.

3 Replies"I was told "The Raid is never supposed to be easy." Please thank them for me, for actually sticking to their guns and not giving in to the incessant whiners! :) The Raiding community send you love and hugs!

When's the bad juju and thorn buff... :(
-
When are the more important issues like the weapon buffs and voice chat going to come around? Its been talked about for a month now. Bungie has said that they are going to fix it, but when?
-
There is a problem going into the gate where we get stuck inside even though our teammates are leaving it open. We have to walk towards the gate or we might be stuck and have to wipe our progress and start back to the checkpoint.
-
Can we vote who is actually the communities voice? Let's make this a democracy. Deej isn't aggressive enough to be the communities voice. He just told us how well he handled telling the devs what we want. I want an impeachment and a election for a new manager. I want someone who tells us what is going on and informative and doesn't back down on a issue till we get a compromise. Bump is agree. Leave hateful comment if you don't. Edit~ I know this won't happen. Just a idea of what I wish would happen.
-
They slightly modified the mechanics of the raid, it's not like my fire team can't just run the same strategy as usual, but now they have to adapt and change their roles on the fly... What the hell is that Bungie? Why are you trying to challenge your players? This is just ridiculous,
-
I'm just sad it wasn't patched sooner, now everyone's running around with level 30 and the Mythoclast (although they arernt using it because it sucks)

10 RepliesWas anything done to stop the Templar being knocked off?

Before patching the game's exploits can you please make sure people can play your game? Today has to be one of the worst days of Destiny gaming, I understand the PS4 2.0 patch probably messed up the game but that shouldn't be an issue with such a huge game such as this. We tried doing the Raid on normal, got to Atheon but from there on in one of the fire team was subsequently kicked from the gaming session, we played 2 hours with connection problems and eventually gave up. I just want to be able to play the game. Please. I totally agree with the patch to solve the exploit where people were pushing him off, thats just wrong and no fun at all. What I don't agree with is the random teleporting, it totally breaks what the previous stages of the Raid is teaching us, we break into smaller teams and do what we're good at. I've developed my ability to use the Relic, and I'm usually the one who uses it and two of my friends support me but now that strategy is gone. You want to make the game harder? fine, but don't change it so that newcomers can't get into a game or progress very far because they don't know how to use the Relic or aren't good at shooting Oracles. NORMAL mode should remain NORMAL, these new random teleportations should be only applied to the HARD mode because there you have seasoned veterans of the game.
