Because there's a metric shitton of backstory and lore to pull from? Just because the main campaign failed (miserably) to portray any of the material, it doesn't mean it's not there.

who wants to go around reading the grimoire though its that fractured and stupid that its hard to make sense of it better to put it in the game when people actually want to know (e.g when you first meet an enemy peter dinklage could explain for you, its not like he was being paid word by word, was he?)
