What's your definition of a "casual gamer?"

I'm seeing disdain for "casual" gamers, people saying they ruined the game. One guy even went so far as to say the "even one filthy casual at 30 is too many." He was talking about the new iron banner update.

  • I play casually after work and on weekends with the goal to max out what gear i have to eventually do the big end game stuff, but I'm not overly worried if i reach that goal tomorrow or next month or longer even, just gonna enjoy the ride, and no i don't want things nerfed to make things easier for me.

Anyone who plays games for fun, regardless of how much, is "casual." Anyone who plays competitively and is all about winning, is "hardcore." Any negative connotation to either term is idiotic.

    • Hell if you play for 1 hour every 3 days but you take that time to progress through strikes, Dailys nightfall, and weekly etc and farm your mats for your gear, your not a casual. But if you log on everyday for 3 hours and play crucible ( which is fine, to each their own ) with the same blue gear from when you first hit 20 that's more of a casual gamer. The casual is more geared towards the RPG Aspect of the game IMO.

    • I’m a casual gamer. I play when I can after work and weekends. I don’t complain and I don’t ask for nerfs or buffs. I know it’s a game for entertainment and not to be taken too seriously. If you don’t like that then the best part about being casual is: I don’t care.

    • It's a term that doesn't really mean anything because everyone views it differently. When I used to play WoW I was happy to be a "casual" because a lot of people there considered anyone with a relationship/spouse, social life, etc. a "casual." This was due to "hardcore" being all about raid progression and being consistent to a weekly raiding schedule that many "normal" people couldn't adhere to. But casual isn't always the same as incompetent, that's a strange mischaracterization. In WoW I played casually but I had a lot of friends in the top raiding guilds and would get invites to raid pretty often because I was considered one of the best healers on the server. I have no idea what "Casual" is supposed to mean in Destiny though. I think I'd still consider myself fairly casual because I don't take the game seriously, but I have done the raid (legit too, not cheating), and I have solo'd the nightfall strikes several times (okay that was done with cheating). I don think the game is old enough and there isn't yet enough content to really parse what makes one a casual or not. :P

    • Hardcore: A gamer that plays a certain type/franchise of games solely to beat other players. Core: A gamer that plays different kinds of games and follows a game's information throughout it's production as well as info about the developers. Casual: A gamer that plays games solely because he has nothing better to do. They usually only play for 2-3 hours in a given day and stick to a thinner selection of franchises while still recognizing a developer's work. Filthy Casual: Like a normal casual. These gamers frequent specific franchises that are continuously re-made as newer games with little to no difference irregardless of the developer's actions in the eyes of the core community.

      • A better question is: where does casual gaming end and when does the so called "core" gaming start?

      • Hardcore gamers aren't necessarily jobless or unintelligent, they just force time into their schedules to play destiny, amongst other games. Casuals' typically don't have that luxury, and just play when they get the free time.

      • I've been gaming since Atari 2600 & i think I'm casually hardcore. I play mostly AAA titles, but have more platinum trophies than most on my FL. i don't do much research on games & it's helped with GTAV & Destiny. I'm not concerned about what was "promised" or shown in a trailer a year before the game was released. I don't feel the need to belittle players that are below my rank & don't admire players above me. gaming is my favorite thing to do with my spare time, but the older i get, the less spare time I have, but that doesn't change my enjoyment of this glorious pastime.

      • Anyone who wants ANYTHING "nerfed," in this game. Go play Demon's Souls people, that'll give you more than enough to complain about. Then, you'll shut up about Destiny! MUAAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! >=3

      • Someone who wakes up at 6am to go to their day job or school. Spends 8 hour bored and stressed out of their minds. Either makes themselves some quick food when they get home, eat dinner with family, or stopped at McDonalds or Taco bell for some grub. Turns on their console and starts Destiny. Runs around playing the story mission, patrols, bounties, or even the crucible. They're just mindlessly playing to relieve the stress of the day. Hasn't played the raid because they play by themselves so often, but you know what he really doesn't care that much. He might go on to the forums to find someone to play with but chances are slim to none. After playing Destiny for 5 to 6 hours they yawn and turn on some late night tv like Adult Swim or Comedy Central. Maybe they watch a DVRed episode of the Walking Dead. The day will feel fulfilled and they'll go to bed to start the day over again the next day.

        • Why would a game company design a game only meant for "hard core" gamers, it would make no money, they are the smallest demographic who buy games. Why is minecraft so big, simple, everyone can play it, from tiny children on Ipads to 60 year olds with great imaginations (a person who is 100 could play for all i know). The hard core people can go build their giant works of art and the kids can build a house made of dirt, all can have fun.

          • Why can't we all just be gamers? I will never understand when or how the gaming community got so elitist and toxic. I consider myself a "casual" yet I play for 3-4 hours a night sometimes. I really don't see why a "casual" term has to be applied to anyone. Why can't we all just be gamers and support each other and instead focus all this toxic attitude towards the gaming companies who are ripping us off with their horrible practices of late?

In my eyes a casual gamer is a gamer who plays games, and follows gaming, casually, in contrast with a hardcore/core gamer, who is always up to date with gaming culture and the releases as well as enjoying games as more than just a distraction. There are also three distinct casuals out there: the casuals who either just play mobile games, or the ones that play only FIFA/CoD/Battlefield/Madden, or the semi-casuals that treat gaming as a true hobby, enjoying some of everything and like to play with their friends a lot.

              • A casual gamer is someone who plays few video games. Someone who only goes for what is trending and does not open up to other games. Someone who only plays one game (example, someone here may only be playing Destiny and think they are "hardcore"). Someone who primarily plays easy games with little challenge, challenging games are a big no no. Someone who doesn't put much time but only plays games to kill time (ex. mobile games). The above are some samples of a casual gamer.
