Difficulty: Is anyone even playing this game without exploits on harder settings (Nightfall, heroic etc.)?

Yes

No

2041

I’m am serious here. Is anyone playing the missions, strikes etc. on harder difficulty (Nightfall, lvl 28 Heroic etc.) the way they are “supposedly” designed? I can’t fathom this. Everything is killing you in basically one hit (or one hit and a gust). I mean how do you survive 4 Wizards and 3 Knights at the same time in the Summoning Pits while staying inside the room when everything needs just to look at you to kill you? I don’t think I am a bad player. If I do strike playlists I’m usually the one without any death while also having the most kills etc. I’ve been beating nightfall strikes and heroics for weeks… just not “the way they are meant to be played”. (tm Nvidia) To cut to the chase: I exploit the living crap out of the AI and terrain. By BlameItOnBrown:
OP raises a good point, and I think many people may have missed it. Is it actually possible to run the nightfall/weekly strikes by actually playing the strike the way it was intended it to be played? Phogoth is a great example, because I don't know if it is actually possible to go into the final chamber with Phogoth on Nightfall, and not die once the high level minions spawn. Can anyone here say they have done it that way? If not, then isn't there something fundamentally wrong with the game's difficulty gradient?
Maybe I worded it poorly but its basically this.

For this Nightfall i had to do it solo because im a loner and have no friends =( .... Anyway, For phogoth i just cleared out the entire room with a scout rifle from the entrance into the summoning pits of enemies and then fired my fusion rifle at him as fast as possible. Managed to kill him after only one drop ship spawn which i got rid of the entire group with one flash bang grenade. I think i could of done it properly if i just had two other friends but, you know, this works to. =] Also, I don't know if this is an exploit but flash bang grenades from my Titan striker were pretty much my main source of damage OR head room to slip past mobs without killing them. =| Crazy arc damage and a stun effect, makes the enemies easy pickings with an arc machine gun OR lifeless mobs for you to sprint past. Like for the wizards, I got them to go into the entrance way that leads to the 3 wave defence, which is a tight chokepoint, I throw one Flash Bang grenade, They all lose there shields and i finish them with a Rocket or my Swarm machine. Defence over and im off to phogoth. =)

  • My group picked off the Knights in pho goth at the beginning and then we ran in and cleared, then stood to the side, set home free, and UNLOADED AN ARC STORM, and after about 3 minutes he was dead. Only 1 spawn group and 1 drop ship came. It was a gamble, but it paid off

  • The issue in terms of nightfall is if you try to do it without staying in a safe spot is that you will be killed. Not sure how many could do it that way. Wizards with 300% damage modifier with 4 of them in nightfall means death. The splash damage is too much to avoid constantly while shooting at them.

I've played all three charcters with the modifiers on, on normal difficulty it's too easy a game most of the time, I wish that Bungie would make a harder patrol so going to earth was worth it I did weekly solo without dying this week, I didn't use exploits I ran anti clockwise round the room using the back to get health and pop a few mobs off only shooting pho goth when I had a sure hit on his crit spot, the only time I've exploited was atheon and I didn't have much choice two people did it while I shot mobs

The level 28 daily heroic story missions aren't that bad, run those all the time "as normal" to get the 2 shards/energy awards in addition to the engram. However I can't see how anyone completes the Nightfall w/o some kind of trick. We had a hard enough time this week running the weekly heroic at level 22. We got through the first time with no deaths, but on subsequent runs we can't even get past the 3 waves room with 4 wizards and a bunch of knights spawning at once, we get wiped every time now. It is almost like the game allowed us to beat it once to get the 3 coins and then raised the difficulty meter 100X w/o telling us. However this is kind of Bungie's mainstay when it comes to difficulty. Going back to the Halo games as they progressed, playing the game on Legendary didn't really make it a challenge, it just made it unfair and Destiny is similar in this vein if you play on the higher difficulty levels. Their idea of making the game a "challenge" is beefing up the enemies so much that you don't have a chance in hell of getting past it w/o some kind of trick or just blind luck. I still remember Legendary on Halo Reach being such BS with the difficulty modifying 1.5X or something for each member in your party, so if you played with 2 or 3 people it was 3-5X harder than normal legendary.

    • I can do The Summoning Pits the right way. Except for the last part. I hide in the room. As I'm sure everyone does. I would love to see a group beat it the right way though.

        • Cheese is the way to go for nightfalls, this weeks pits can probably be done without cheese but killing the wizards in wave 2/3 in sword room would be tough without taking cover in hall. You will see a ton of posts on this thread like "cake, solo'd it in 6 minutes no cheese" well if it's on youtube I will believe it otherwise I'm sure cheese was involved, or self res. I would love to see a nightfall video for this weeks one with zero cheese, zero self res, and solo. If you did it and can prove it, I salute you.

        • If nightfall/w.h.strike were supposed to be played exactly like the low level strikes, where would have been the difficulty? If you only needed a legendary - exotic equipment to run it with the same strategy you already used over and over, wouldn't it be too easy? In my opinion we play those strikes in a smarter way than the low-level ones,we had to adapt to the high difficulty and we found new and smarter ways to beat it,using new strategies and a new playstyle, which make us good players

          • Kiting the wizards and knights out of that room is not an exploit in my opinion, it's just being smart and surviving. Running in and out of the antechamber on Phogoth is kinda cheesing, but hey, it works. Pushing the Templar and Atheon in VoG...now those are definitely exploits and more people are doing that rather than playing legit, at least in the PUGs that I've been in.

          • When i get my friends together i prefer doing it legit, but most of the time im soling shit and i try my best to not exploit it to much and ive gotten better at surviving most shit without trying to cheese bosses etc. Hive Wizards and Knights are way harder compared to the rest of the enemy factions though.

          • I clicked NO. Hiding under the stairs for archon priest, staying in the pre-boss room for phogoth, hiding in the back of the walker room in Devils Lair so norhing can't hit you, shoving Atheon and Templar off a cliff, etc... Those are exploits and not "tactics." Let's be honest here. But ya, like others have said, I am not gonna beat my head into a wall if there's a much more efficient way to do things. And I don't blame anyone else for doing the same.

          • Weekly heroic it kinda depends on the strike and if i'm on a lower level alt, but generally I play it as normally as I can while solo. On the weekly nightfall though it's pretty much impossible to do it solo. Lets take what is arguably the hardest strike in destiny which is the summoning pits. It comes with arc burn and lightswitch. 1. You cannot let pretty much anything melee you as it will 1 hit you. So that kinda forces you to stay back a bit and play with caution. 2. Arc burn with the hive which do arc damage. Again the thrall both melee and bombers, deal arc damage which will 1 hit you. 3. Wizards shoot about 20 shots out in one burst and burst every 2 seconds with it taking around 1 second travel time to reach you. The window for hitting one of these is about a second (though based on your reaction time you pretty much won't get a shot off safely unless you guess when to break cover). How on earth are you supposed to take out 4 wizards (constantly firing), watch out for both types of thrall and knights coming for you and take note of any acolytes hiding behind cover somewhere, all at the same time and stay in the room where your ghost is hacking the door. If you stay in that room the knights and the wizards will chase you around. 4. A Knight with a boomer weapon will almost 1 shot you, leaving even the most basic of hive enemies to finish you off very quickly if you don't find cover. 5. Lets say you wanted to do Phogoth properly inside the room. Obviously you can't go in the middle as Phogoth is there and will walk to you and kill you with melee. You can't hide on the bottom side at the stairs as you will be sandwiched in between Phogoth and the hive tombship as well as the enemies it drops. I believe if you stay near the 2 sides it causes the spawn of the enemies above you (same way that the shrieker, wizard and knight spawn is triggered if you stay in that opening room too long). Only place on youtube I've seen it done inside the room is either on top of the rock or main structure, or hiding behind the rock on the far back left side of the room for the entire fight. Every youtube guide or video is of people sniping through the two rooms. As someone mentioned, it would be better if they lowered the overall damage of enemies (so that a modifier turns a 1 hit thrall or hobgoblin into 3 hits for example) and instead change the mechanics and amount of enemies in the encounter. At the moment a thrall one hitting makes even one very deadly. However if they lowered it to 3 hits but instead of spawning 5 thrall spawned 15-20 I feel it'd be a lot better and actually doable properly. As someone mentioned with the archon priest. With the modifier on, one burst of his gun can kill you instantly. How you're supposed to dodge his damage, teleporting on you, a servitor, 2 sniper vandals, fallen captains, dreggs, grenades, stealth vandals, shanks and a skiff all of which can pretty much 1 hit you, I do not have a clue. Only way I was able to beat him was (at the right level) hiding in that area you first jump down, rounding the corner, take a few shots, retreat up top and repeat, or (at lower level) just hide under that platform and snipe when he lost focus on you.

            • I always go into the room to fight Phogoth, on any difficulty. There's a rock in the back of the room (left side from the entrance) that works well for cover from Phogoth's attacks while you can peek around and kill minions. Sometimes I get overrun and I jump over them to the platform in the far back and hug the wall close to Phogoth so he can't shoot me. I continue to kill minions as they run down the stairs to the platform. If there is a large number of minions I throw my tripmine grenade on the staircaise to deter them or do a large amount of damage. Rocket launchers work well too. After all the minions are dead I can run back to the rock and shoot Phogoth, ducking behind cover when I need to regen. It's definitely tough on Nightfall. You absolutely have to remember where minions will spawn and be able to get to cover and line-of-sight them so they aren't constantly hitting you. Always keep your head on a swivel and watch your radar so you are never surprised. As a hunter, Knucklehead Radar comes in handy, or alternatively you could use Lord High Fixer/Patience and Time.

I cheese everything I can. And it's still difficult and nerve racking at times. Having great armor doesnt mean shit when everything one shots you, and a single blindsided melee hit takes you back to orbit. I agree with the op, we need vids showing it can even be done legit

The way to beat everything on destiny is to never stop moving. Cover only works in rare instances once you're inside a fight.
