Farming mats is honestly not that bad at all. Do some research. Learn some good routes. Farm 16 at a time or more if you'd like, just don't burn yourself out on it. Farming is not enjoyable, you must make it enjoyable.
Also, it's the reward that counts. Farming is well worth the time investment in my opinion. As you can see I am level 30 and I have SEVERAL weapons exotic and legendary maxed, along with all 4 raid pieces and an exotic helmet maxed.

You run a "route" in a loop of places where chests or random open material appears. As you progress through the route, it will respawn in the same areas, you just have to learn the spots and always be looking for them in different places. You can farm an area for hours and still find new chests in places you didn't see them before. I try and coincide my farming with bounties to save time. If I have Moon patrols, I gather Helium at the same time and try to hit a Public Event. If a bounty is for a planet that has a material I want, I will farm at least 16/32 or 50 mats on my way to the bounty. The time spent flying back and forth on this game is annoying enough, so I multi-task everything. Often I come in after doing everything I wanted to with my character and find myself 10-20 rep shy of another Vanguard level; often I have surplus that I can sell off to put myself over and get rewards for the level bump. Note: This is mostly for when running solo or with people who don't mind. Just don't be that guy and go farming when you are on the strike playlists. Grabbing a spirit bloom on the way past is not bad, but rooting through caves, etc., is pushing things.

Caves and buildings in Old Russia have no chest. I've found more chest on the side ledges of outskirt walls than the dark basements with yellow hive or fallen in them. You can't simply jump to the highest point and scope the area out like you can on the moon and mars either. Spinmetal is just all random

In the Mothyards there are 4 caves that spawn spinmetal chests, as well as a couple of rooms in the building along the one side. Other chests spawn alongside that building, under the wings and beside rock outcroppings. Other parts of Old Russia are much the same.

You're wrong. There are several viable spinmetal farming locations. I find spinmetal the easiest of all items to farm next to helium filaments.

Chest farming route in the rocket yard gives spinmetal also pop up every where along the way.

It's alright to begin with, but running circles for hours on end is another repetitive aspect that needs changing. There are plenty of other viable options that can be introduced :)
