Lots and lots of people say that Bungie should put Scarabs into Multiplayer. All of those people share one thing in common: They are all completely retarded. Here is the top 10 reasons why you will NEVER see a Scarab in Multiplayer. Feel free to link to this whenever people suggest it.
1. AI, not vehicle
The Scarab is, contrary to popular belief, NOT a vehicle. It is an enemy, just like Brutes, Grunts or Hunters. It is a very large enemy, and it has a very specific and has very unusual AI code, but it is not a vehicle. Because it is not a vehicle, all you could possibly do in Multiplayer with a Scarab would be to give it a designated team and then let it do whatever it wants. That does not make for a fair game, or an enjoyable one, especially since its movements would be more or less random.
2. No UI
The Scarab, as we just talked about, is not a vehicle. It has no UI (User Interface) that would allow you to actually use it. It isn't like you can just walk over to one part of the Scarab and and get a message saying "Hold LB to drive Scarab." It has no UI, and thus no way to control it.
3. Unevenness
Lots of people have said "Oh, it would be cool if the Scarab were like a big moving base in CTF or Assault." Firstly, you already have that, it's called an Elephant. Secondly, the Scarab would make the game extremely uneven. If it were going against ground troops, the ground troops would have no chance against the Scarab, especially since there wouldn't really be a way to "board" it. If it were going against other vehicles however, the Scarab would be outmatched. It can't turn fast enough, and it just doesn't have powerful enough guns (at least in Halo 3). It would make the game very uneven.
4. Clutter from explosions
Have you ever noticed when you kill a Scarab, you immidiately leave the battlefield on which you fought it? On the Storm, you go up into those buildings; on The Ark, you go up the spire; on The Covenant, you either go to the complete other side of the valley, or you go up to the platform with Guilty Spark. There is a reason for this: When Scarabs explode, they leave a lot of crap lying around on the map. Scarabs make entire parts of the map unnavigatable, probably for the entire remaining duration of the game. If Bungie put Scarabs in Multiplayer, they would quickly clutter the map, making it un-navigatable.
5. Lag
Not only would it be laggy to try and network the movements of something that big, it would also be laggy as hell trying to keep it straight if more than one were ever used in a game. If you think it is laggy in Sandtrap BTB when two Elephants go to fight, you ain't seen nothing yet!
6. Map size
What possible map, including Sandtrap, could even hold a Scarab? Even Sandtrap, due to the way the buildings are structured and layed out, probably couldn't hold a Scarab in a fair and realistic way. Bungie would have to make another map as big as Sandtrap, probably bigger, and then not put any structures, buildings or geographic landmarks on the map just to be able to give the Scarab room to maneuver. The Scarab simply wouldn't fit in Multiplayer.
7. Usefulness #1
How often to you get the idea to use the Elephant when you are playing Sandtrap? Sure, maybe sometimes you respawn on it if a teammate is near by, or in VIP, but honestly, how often do you think to yourself "I should go get in the Elephant turret." The Scarab would be, in essense, a bigger, stronger Elephant. Considering how rarely the Elephants get used, it would be a small miracle if anyone actually considered using the Scarab.
8. Usefulness #2
Let's assume Bungie does turn the Scarab into a vehicle, and they program a UI for it. How difficult do you think it would be to actually use the Scarab? Think about it: You can either shoot your main gun, which takes time to charge, and you have to be looking in the direction you want to be shooting in for about 20 seconds prior to taking your shot, or you could step on stuff. However, you would either be stepping on vehicles or ground troops. Vehicles are probably to fast to actually step on without an enormous amount of luck, and ground troops are so small you would never hit them. The Scarab takes absolutely no skill, and more luck than practically anything else in the world. Does that sound like something you want to depend on to get your ranks up?
9. Getting aboard
So off in the distance you see an unmanned Scarab. You decide to go use it. One problem: How do you get on board? In the Campaign, you have to practically destroy the thing before you are even on it. That or jump on it from a great height. You can't exactly just walk onto it because it is standing if it isn't broken. And you can't exactly jump onto it, because if you could get to something higher than the Scarab, you could probably just get on it in the first place. Even if Bungie did grant your stupid wish to put Scarabs in Multiplayer, you wouldn't even be able to get on it.
10. Currently uneven things get destroyed when they spawn
Ever played a Custom Game where there is one Hornet somewhere on the map? Well, I have, and I can tell you from experience that rather than open up the possibility for someone to get in it, dominate, make the game unfun for everyone else, and get a cheap lead, they just destroy it as soon as it spawned. Someone yells "Hornet's back!" and everyone rushes over to all shoot it as once with Spartan Lasers or hit it with grenades. After it is blown up, we remember our differences and go back to killing each other. The same thing will happen with Scarabs. They'll cause so many problems, people will end up just destroying them as soon as they spawn, so they don't have to deal with it.
And those are the 10 reasons why you will never see a Scarab in multiplayer.
EDIT 1: Edited "Vehical" with "Vehicle" for those of you laughing at my spelling.
EDIT 2: I am not a negative person. I am actually very in favor of new things being added to Halo. I do however think you need to think through all the possibilities and problems with doing so, and sometimes take a calculated risk. So for all of you who say "Oh he's just a negative nancy, F*** HIM!", no, I'm not negative. I'm trying to show you all the problems with your idea, because if it were implimented, you would be the kinds of people saying that it should be removed, and that "Bungee r FAIL!"
EDIT 3: For those of you who say "Bungie can just program it, no problems, you're retarded!", you don't know the first thing about programming. Bungie would have to create a WHOLE NEW VEHICLE if they were to impliment this (mostly because of reasons 1, 2 and 9), and in order to do that, they would have to make entirely new game discs. New vehicles can't just be added though AUs or though Map Packs. At this point, it is too late to create whole new vehicles, and the Scarab would be a whole new vehicle.
EDIT 4: Wow, you people are stupid. The Scarab in Halo 2 was not actually piloted by the red Elites standing in it. Bungie used what's called a Pathway. That's where you program the image to move in a certain direction until it reaches a spot, then turn and go a different direction. Those Elites were just standing there to make it look like the Scarab was being piloted. Those Elites weren't actually doing anything.\
EDIT 5: This post is directed at the idea of turning a Scarab into a vehicle you can use in any gametype. I have nothing to say to people who suggest making a "Everybody vs. Scarab" gametype or a "Scarab vs. Scarab" gametype, other than that the boat has already left the dock (it is too late to program that - See Edit 3).
EDIT 6: It is entirely possible to have a Scarab be a base of some kind, or be a piece of map geometry. That would be perfectly do-able on a future map because it would just be a big piece of map geometry that looks like a Scarab. What I'm talking about is implimenting a moveable, drivable, pilotable Scarab; not just having a piece of map geometry that looks like a Scarab.
EDIT 7 - The Last One: Alright guys, this is the last edit for this thread. I just want to say two things. First off, I am not going to make one about putting the Pelican in multiplayer. I don't think it is a realistic idea, for many of the reasons listed about the Scarab, but I don't want to waste time making one. Secondly, I officially disown this thread. I will NOT be checking it anymore, I will NOT respond to PMs about it, and I will NOT take any bull crap about it in any form. This is my opinion, I support it, I have supported it many times, I think it is sound, if you disagree/agree, fine.
Thanks for reading.

Thats sad
-
Good job on this. Might help clear it up for some.
-
why did you need ten reasons? if the very first point means absolutely NO scarab, why the **** did you keep going?
-
Well, I cannot deny your reasons... Here are a few reasons why 1. It would not be necessary in matchmaking, it would be a cool little feature in forge... 2. Size does not affect the lagginess of a map, polygons do. So, we could pretty much have a giant flat map that could have amazing forge capabilities. 3. Bungie never said they could not program vehicles into the game, they could have easily foresaw that and made vehicles a little simpler to program into the game. When they added the Avalanche vehicles, they made changes in the models themselves... (Or they programed a completely new UI for the vehicle) This shows that they CAN make changes and add to current vehicles. Therefore it is NOT impossible. 4. What could it possibly harm? You should add this to your list though : Too little players allowed in a match
-
lol did you really think that this even needed to be addressed? what would we do without you? probally live a longer more productive life.
-
....for Halo 4 :D
-
i see it would be pretty cool though. if they found a way for it to work
-
1you can easy mod ui into a scarab ive done it before on halo custom edition its not that hard 2you can easy mod it to work like another vehicle like you could easy put a drivable pelican into a map just remove the ai path and replace it with a hornet base and change it so say press RB to drive pelican 3You could put two 4the clutter will just despawn like when you blow up a warthog 5with server update you could fix the lag 6they would obiously make a new map for it 7if it was a scarab everybody in the game would run to get to it everybody would wont it 8 it dosent take 20 secounds to charge the laser and its also got another gun on the top 9 when you stop driving it it lowers like when you take out a leg in campaign 10 it could be a non respawning vehicle the scarab so once its been taken out its out and wont respawn till the next round and it could be easly taken out like it was in campaign the scarab has it strengths and weaknessess witch kinda balance each other out

It doesn't have to be used. I can be a broken Down Scarab in Limbo. 3. If you put Hover Vehicles to the bottom Team then maybe it would be even 4 Make it Un-blowupable 5. As I said for Question 3 6. Sandbox is a big vast map 7. If t were to be a One Flag/Bomb game then it would be used 8. Same answer to 2 9. 3 again 10. The Scarab Wont be too harmful with big guns and all that although It would only get used during one sided games Also wouldn't it be good if there were dead covenant bodies all over it
-
It could become drivable with a few tweaks if the H2 scarab came back and was put into multiplayer then it could work I remember driving one on Coag and it seemed to work (gotta love mods) They could add a teleporter-like structure underneath it for easy access and it would be drivable just like in H2, then have a few more entry ways to decrease camping and it could work or even a Minor Scarab slightly smaller, slightly weaker and a little faster that would work
-
Even if they put a scarab in, in most matches it will probably lag. i lag on team slayer matches. Big Team i lag bad think of a scarab 10x as bad.
-
Ah, but you see, they can remove the AI and replace with the UI from another vehicle. I have done it countless times in Halo 1 and Halo 2 PC. It would be a lot like this! WARNING: READING REQUIRED By the way, I do NOT want a Scarab in multiplayer. But I do want the ^above^ [Edited on 09.30.2008 9:31 PM PDT]

How about you spread some peanut butter on my bawlz and lick it off.

a big part of life is accepting change, i mean, 4 years ago if i said "lets make a zombie gametype for halo" everyone would be laughing thinking i was a retard. point is, a good game is a game that covers alot of things people want. even if some dont agree with it.
-
without readin you cons, i think it could be fun. imagen two teams of 6, however one control scarab. Team#1 objective is to defend the scarab at all cost [while some how in contol of it]. Team#2 must destroy the scarab before time runs out. the level[s] would be like the battle in the storm. so team#2 spawn inside, where it is safe, soon as they go outside, they must attack fast and tactical.
Posted by: triderian Some excellent points, this may sweep away some of the unrealistics ideas concerning scarabs momentarily, but the "it was in Halo custom edition" will most likely return hope to those who are exceptionally obsesed with the scarab. The pelican however has a little more light at the end of its tunnel considering it would be easier to script, basically a warthog that flies, no fancy or unique features required; gunner seat, driver seat, side seats. A map utilizing the geometry of a scarab would merely be teasing the community, that wouldn't be a great idea. Scarab versus all will inevitably fail, one person can deal with a scarab, a team would render its chances of survival for longer than a few seconds more or less non existant.
I think the most important point is what all these people asking for a Scarab in multiplayer share: they are completely retarded.
-
So you say that Changes can't come in UAs or map packs? How about the things that came with the map packs? Like Avalanche where the vehicles were changed to different colors and their weapons got changed. Keep an open mind and you also contradict yourself with saying nobody will go to the Scarab like the Elephant but then say everyone will go to it in a giant battle everytime it spawns. Please choose one.

but remember, the scarabs in campaign as slow, cumbersome... and lets face it their AI is -blam!- retarded. but if a person controls it.... thats totally different
-
i love how u said it would be unfair against ground forces but in campaign it only takes one person to take down a scarab yet in multiplayer there would be 8 people on a team trying to take it down but it doesn't matter because this will never happen.
-
the elites control it in halo 2 dawg. u go inside it. destroy it so noone can have it? does anyone shoot off all the sniper or laser when they pick it up to prevent it from falling in enemy hands? in chess is your whole strategy to sacrifice your queen so they have none? no sir, and anyone who wastes the wonders will have easy d but no offense.
-
Dude dont u ever think about stuff before u actually put it online. Like 6-7 of your things make no sense to put y the scarb shouldnt be a vehicle. 1.AI, not vehicle Is it so hard to change the AI to a vehicle, no it is not. 2.No UI Same reason as the first is it so hard to put a UI on the scarab. Th reason being i didnt list the rest of the reasons is that i have to go to class so i have to log off i'll finish this when I come back.
-
I think they should let you use the Forward Unto Dawn. ^_^.
-
People are so stupid these days. Look I know absolutely nothing about game software and stuff, but I simply know with out thinking that they could not program a scarab in multiplayer. And i also agree with with the lag you were talking about. If some one said bungie could simply program it with out any probs and have barely any lag in the game play after the making of the scarab, then they are a fuc*in dumb as*. I'm so glad you made that cause I have been wanting to tell people exactly what you said. I just didnt know how to put the message in the right words like you did. I wanna play with you on Live some time. My GT is halofreek11557. Would you mind giving me your GT? But you know the thing about getting up to the scarab? Even if they did put the scarab in multiplayer (which i seriously fuc*in doubt), you would be able to get up to it with a tower and ladder on the tower. I hope you didnt think this message was bull crap. Your friendly Halo Freek, Hunter.

how about a pelican one
-
just think happy thoughs... yah know what i bet nobody has given a thought to? Halo 3 PC FTW!!!!! which means: *lost of mods *POSSIBLY new armors and weapons *and some day, in the future... HALO 3 Custom Edition!!!!!!!!!
