Xur makes items have less of a personal value?

I've been only playing Destiny a little bit in the last few days and was thinking about all the exotics people are running around with. I've come to the conclusion that I see everyone with the same stuff (stating the obvious), but surprisingly there are a few players with more unique characteristics. This includes exotic items not many people have. Since thinking about this and looking at other forums related to people wanted certain things from Xur, I feel as if it ruins the value of a certain item if everyone has it. I'll be the first to admit that part of the reason disagree with all of these players "wants" is because I like being my own character and looking different than most others. I just feel as if it makes some items less of a big deal when everyone is running around with it on . I am only bringing this topic up to hear what other people think. Whether they feel like everyone deserves the opportunity to get what they want or it should be earned through dedication and time. Anyone have a different view on things? Edit: I changed the title to a more clear on how some of you define "value".

If I see someone else running around with the same stuff, it doesn't bother me none. I am only concerned about my gear and buffs it brings to my characters. I like that it looks pretty cool, but I am about the stats. Heck, there has been times that I haven't used a piece of gear because it lacks a perk my current gear has. For example, even if the gloves offer more defense then the ones I have, I won't use them unless they have the reload time handcannon perk.
