Legendary gear - 80 materials
Exotic gear - 64 materials
It probably takes an hour to farm 70-100 materials, big whoop right?
But did I tell you it's going to be the most mind numbingly boring thing you've ever done?
Edit: Alternatives,
buy with glimmer or marks
buy with coins or motes
earn via missions; amount scales by difficulty
earn via crucible
Material bounties
Trade weapon parts or class materials for
Earn during patrols and public events
Edit2-update: You know it's boring when your ascendant materials out number your planet materials
451 ascendant materials
182 planet materials
I even have more strange coins than I do planet materials...
Edit3: Math
Will take you 21.76 hours to farm 1,632 materials if you're gathering 75 per hour on average.
To hit level 29 it will take 304 materials if you have one exotic piece.
To hit level 30 you will most likely replace those pieces with raid equipment. That's another 240
(304+240)3 = 1,632
1,632/75 = 21.76
21.76 very boring hours
This is not taking weapons into consideration.

Just do it here and there. I usually do it laying down to force my self to sleep

1 ReplyEdited by DjNormal: 10/23/2014 9:09:59 PMAssuming I have the time to do it. It's kinda zen running around mat and chest farming. Assuming there aren't a bunch of people doing it in the same area. I've also gotten 3 blue ships from looting all those chests. And yes, I also get a bunch of public events done. Which is nice if you have the bounty for them as well.
-
I don't mind it so much. I just hate it when you get some jerk who decide to go the opposite way as everyone else.
-
You can trade them in for vanguard marks. I'd much rather it work in reverse, I wish there were a way to buy materials. Would gladly spend glimmer, marks or strange coins if it meant less farming.

21 RepliesEdited by Hylebos: 10/23/2014 4:45:03 PMI personally think it would be fantastic if there was a way to earn resources for completing an activity. Even if something like the Daily Heroic Story mission awarded you eight of a random resource for completing it, that would help tremendously. Or, perhaps it could be an incentive for players to play ordinary story missions at the higher difficulties. At the moment, there is little reason to complete the story missions on anything higher than the first heroic level (which is required for Target Bounties) aside from personal enjoyment of the extra difficulty. Adding on extra resources from that particular planet for replaying a story mission would be a great alternative to farming chests in patrol, though I imagine they would need to limit this particular bonus to once per day per mission because otherwise people would just kill Rixis the Archon Slayer on the first Earth mission on 28 over and over again and get infinite Spinmetal.

Do bounties when intending to farm youll find a fair few while zipping around

5 RepliesI rather farm mats for crucible marks then actually play crucible. True story
-
Do it while you bountie, its alot more efficient that way.

This^^

Edited by Zarda: 10/23/2014 9:08:57 PMI actually don't mind the material farming, if you know the spots that help make it timely and efficient. Still, having a constant surplus of maxed out glimmer leaves a lot to be desired. Like, for instance, why can't we pay a scavenger robot on the tower 1,000 glimmer to farm a random assortment of Relic Iron on Mars, over a half hour of game time?
-
The most boring and mind numbing thing I do is work. Material farming isn't that bad. You can hang around locations with the wonder of possible events. And if you got peeps with ya then hilarity will always ensue
-
I got lucky... Somehow, ALL of my equipment required spirit bloom. About an hour of farmin the nexus strike spawn area, I was set... and now have no need for materials.
-
If you're not getting but 70-100 materials every hour, you're not farming the right spots/taking too long to kill the mobs in the area. I can get a good 150+ easy an hour. I have a chest run on every planet and 3 different runs on Earth. Although I never run chest for more than 30-45 minutes, I still get enough materials for what I need. If I have a free day where I've already done the raid and Nightfall for the week and finished my bounties for the day I might spend the rest of the day farming materials. Then the next day I forget and trade 50 for crucible marks/rep... Like five times lol.

Turn on some music + do patrol missions at the same time + kill everything in sight = loot, loot, and more loot. Also a good time.
-
Bring bounties and run missions. It seems less mindless and You will get your rank up, you can dismantle the rewards. I wish we could trade. I have so much upgrade (planet )mats and need coins and shards/energy. You have what I need and I have what you need. But nope. It's a shared world not community.
-
Depends where you donot I had 6 relic iron after 20 mins in a spot I heard about I had 64 so you can so 250+ in an hour.
-
I don't mind it, especially when an event comes up!
-
5 RepliesGood company goes a long way! Join a clan, or meet up with some other people from different groups. I always take fun people patrol farming, has never felt like a grind.
-
2 RepliesI plan my farming around public events. Makes it a lot more fun.
-
Since we can turn in 50 materials for some vanguard or crucible points, why can't we buy some materials with the crucible points. 25 pts = 50 mats.
-
1 ReplySo don't do it. Just buy it on the auction hou.... Nvm.
-
2 RepliesI farm mats when Wednesday - Monday night. Nothing else to do?
-
3 RepliesI like to listen to podcasts while I do that and just have fun sniping enemies
-
4 RepliesBut you might get a rare brown ship that looks like all your other rare brown ships!
-
I just pick a good chest run, turn down the volume on the game and listen to a podcast. It helps immensely and I look forward to farming for materials now.

When the game first came out I had an idea. What if xur or the speaker sold bundles of the material you need. As in the spirit bloom or spin metal. Like a bundle of 50 for like 12 motes of light or 7 strange coins. Something like that would be extremely helpful in the future
