On Community Feedback

Hey, there. I'd like to see if we can create a sense of understanding about something. I see a lot of threads on this forum that say things like "Please read this, DEEJ!" or "I hope Bungie sees this!" We read all of this feedback. More people than you would suspect look in on the forum here and in places all over the Internet where players talk about Destiny. We take it in. We measure it against data we have on our end. We triage it against our own wish lists. We plan our work based on the people we have on our team and the hours we have in any given work day. We choose our battles on the development floor the same way you do when you look at your Director. "What can I accomplish next to get better?" is the essential question. There is a process in place to support Destiny. You, constant reader, are a part of that process. Your voice is, by my proxy, a part of the conversation - even when it makes the meeting to which I've been invited a little contentious. I do not post in every thread that appears on this forum because I don't assume you'll settle for being placated with a stock "We hear you!" every time one of you has a good idea. The promise I can make is that I am working with the developers to make sure that they understand how you feel as they go about making their decisions. Now, there will be times when I focus on the positive. There are people in this community who deserve an introduction to happy gamers who are doing amazing things to provide a service to their fellow Guardians. Those people deserve their due credit. This does not mean that I'm dodging your feedback. It means that I'm attempting to see our community from every angle - to give everyone a voice. This may have been ill-advised, but it's something I wanted to say. Hopefully it doesn't blow up in my face, because I actually do like talking to you on the forum. I respect the people who take the time to express their honest opinions on this and other forums. I would compel you not to stop. That is all. For now.
FoMan123 The volume of feedback from the Community is overwhelming. Responding to everybody is impossible ... imagine that this level of volume and work NEVER stops. 24 hours a day, 7 days a week ... Sounds like a lot for one guy (or even a small team) to deal with, right?
And then on the flip side of that sad story we hear of Activisions $500 MILLION, and then the RECORD SALES ... so here is some suggestions; - hire some people to help, - hire someone to do some basic acknowledgement of the communities effort in all this (no technical knowledge required - even a simple "thank you" would work wonders) - spend some of that cash to put a proper support network in place - rather than complain ("a lot for one guy") about our complaining get some help
It's probably unreasonable to expect a response at all
Again - why? How much has the game made - how about investing just a little now to help yourself, either that or watch it die. Doing the bungie SOP of "going dark" is not going to work this time.
"Bungie won't tell us what they're planning with any specificity!" is far better than this complaint: "Bungie LIED to us and made us false promises!"
So better to treat everyone as a child ... and then publicly complain that everyone acts like a child ?!? Do you see the problem here? The perception of lies comes from exactly your proposed solution. Even your claim "every single marketing piece that came out pre-launch was marked with disclaimers" screams deceit ... or to put it nicely "concealing or misrepresenting the truth". And then we have the other voices from within bungie, the way Marty expressed it, and then he gets sacked (or the attempt given how it worked out legally). But yet you feel that to hide "what they're planning with any specificity" is still better?
Bungie is clearly working hard on Destiny. This is something that I doubt any of you would dispute
Except with that backup motto of not telling "what they're planning with any specificity" how can we know ... all we see if the problems, and they are getting bigger. We see bungie blame institutions and universities for their Centipede errors, and then we see this same error effecting a whole continent - how do these two facts play out, unless you want to support paranoia which sees university SysAdmins taking over control of Europe - lol. In the lack of any "specificity" the blame game looks more like those lies you spoke of.
In closing, my advice is to be critical and provide your feedback as thoroughly as you can
Feedback which even you acknowledge is "probably unreasonable to expect a response at all", backed up with a general "gone dark" policy kinda leave a feeling of pointlessness to it all. Bottom line - feedback has to be two way ... hire some more hands, recognize and take ownership of the problems. Triage the process, hire a LOT of "thank you monkeys", and make sure they are team managed so that the right threads are escalated. Don't expect forum members to go searching ... it is YOUR forum, take ownership and have those monkeys direct the traffic ... a simple "thanks" and helpful advice on bungie.net would be a change from the usual ban and blocked thread. And final point don't put your hero - your DeeJ - in the coal pit. He is meant to be a "Manager", have him manage ... at the moment all he is capable of is spinning his wheels getting between problems, too busy to accomplish a single task.

  • "We are the new Bungie. We’re the Bungie that shipped Destiny and that has changed us." -Deej, on the 82nd episode of the Guardian Radio Podcast. Yes, I’m painfully aware of how much Bungie has changed. Started from the bottom, now you're EA. It’s totes cute that Bungie thinks they have actually improved the game, though. Outside of fixing (I use that term loosely) Engrams, every update so far has been a nerf. "Want the exotics you worked hard for to function properly? Maybe later, but first we gotta shut down this loot cave." Lol. If you're *really* listening to and implementing fan feedback, then where are the things we've actually asked for? Because I'm pretty sure changes to the mechanics in the Atheon fight isn't what we asked for.... Gentlesirs, please go back to being the old Bungie we all know and love. You are literally Renee Zellweger right now; Used to be hot, tried to improve your image, and now we all just scratching our heads wondering wtf happened?

    • I understand the logic behind "Not giving us the details" to avoid being accused of lying or not meeting the promises. What could be helpful though is letting us know what is cut and the reasons behind it. I feel letting us KNOW what particular content was tried and didn't meet the vision of the game would help in some way. So we won't view it as empty promises or lies but more of a dose of logic as to why some things didn't transfer over. The Killwalls though... there is no explaining that away >_> I want to go out there even into empty space, it calls me....

Well Deej, I think you would get less flack from a large section of this community if the very few answers to the hundreds, perhaps thousands of legitimate questions you receive, weren't cryptic or obvious side steps, and some simple answers, people would be a lot less agitated. As it stands, this community feels completely ignored by a developer that we used to love for it's honesty and transparency. You've successfully become just another appendage of Activision. You went from having your community love you, to now resembling a lynch mob. Only you (bungie) can fix this rift. It's not on us, it's on you. We supported you, we pay you. If you continue down the path you that you've been on since release, I can tell you this; you will lose this community. You have to battle your own creation when halo: master chief collection hits shelves. You will be going up against your cousin (sledgehammer) when call of dooty is released. If you continue down this path, and the trends go as they already are, your "ten year plan" for destiny will become your "6th month after launch server closure". Long story short, Deej, if you value your job, and bungie wants to exist after this game, I suggest you really, really, REALLY start listening to your employer; the community. They want content, they want fixes, they want buffs they were promised weeks ago. Ffs there hasn't been a decent event since launch! I know you guys lost Joe, and that really hurt, but good Lord, wake up and get to work. Either get good or start looking for a new job bungie, cuz right now you are properly -blam!-ing the pooch.

      • Ktan for Community Manager 2015. I could do a FAR superior job. I will also accept a job as a storyline writer. I'd do 2014, but I'd like to avoid the impending shitstorm that The Dark Below will bring.

That was all bullshit every last word of it. If bungie truly did listen to its community then they would have told us what the hell happens in the last year that caused the game to do a 180.

        • I personally would be happy to see some kind of mark on threads that Bungie read. Let's be honest, you can't read every post so something that let's the author as well as the supporters know that their post was read by Bungie (if you implement these ideas is another thing)

          • DeeJ, I appreciate what you do, as you seem to be the only real voice/conduit...speaker? between us as the community and the developers. What we really need from you though is more transparency. Vague generalizations and vague timelines just aren't enough during your weekly updates. Even if you can't give us an exact date could you give us an estimate? If things like Thorn and Bad juju are getting a buff, instead of saying "soon" could you say within the next 6 months. As a project manager, your updates are infuriating because they tell us very little in terms of the future. I understand hot fixes and bug patches clearly take priority over weapon buffs, but communicate that to us. Give us a list of your priorities that developers are working on and give us a list of the items that will be addressed in xyz patches/months once you figure out how best to fix those issues. Thanks.

          • seriously??? so you give the devs our thoughts and they turn around and spit in our faces any way? all I can say is wow, they suck. thanks for the info im glad that I only purchased the base game ans wont be purchasing any dlc content because ive seen what i'll get from them and I don't believe it will be worthwhile. don't get me wrong with the hours ive logged on destiny its worth the $60 I paid for it but it still seems so empty. i'll admit I don't like pvp games which gives me some clarity on just how empty this games story is because I cant be placated by sitting in the same maps shooting at other guardians.

            • I'm glad you read a ton of what gets posted. I personally visit this website(more regularly now) and the Subreddit and I love the generally positive vibe of this community. And if you keep improving, then I'm more likely to stick around and keep helping out everyone making their way through the game.

Just call arena.net and ask for advice haha... You want a lively social world? Maybe it's time to stop asking the community and start asking the developers who made guild wars 2 or even World of Warcraft (battlenet) My goodness there are some good people here in the community but a majority of it is just cancer to be honest. It's like customer service here on Black Friday, but EVERY SINGLE DAY. That's what I suggest... Though I don't think my voice will be heard in the crowd. Stop patching.. Stop balancing.. Just continue to evolve the game. One step at a time. Bungie, you guys have the client and don't need permission from Sony or Microsoft to update this game. Maybe erase the drawing board.. Erase all the complaints, start fresh...and just make your dream as a company and philosophy for the game to come true.

Has doing a tower defense game mode thing been brought to the table yet? Where there's 20+ guardians fighting on top of the wall and inside of it preventing waves of fallen from destroying the wall from the inside out. Or something like a hall of fame in the tower showing the top records for each strike and raid. Whether it be clear time or clear date with the top 3 fireteams' statues. Small things here and there bug me in the game as well like the glimmer cap, not being able to discard glimmer boost items..and why I get sent flying when being punched by a titan.... Oh well... Waiting to pull another all nighter to try again at first completion of your next raid.. Edit: This really wasn't the post to post this stuff to I think... Carp. :T

                  • Hello, This is my first post on the forums, i have been reading the forums a lot though, As i and my friends i play with, feel the same way as most of the people here do. But i wanted to wait for the "right" thread to come along to share my (our) 2 cents. Content : Just like almost everyone else, i also feel there is not enough. After the reset me and two friends cleared the nightfall, and the weekly strike. We did the nightfall within the hour and the weekly took 30 min max. My gear is maxed out (29 and a bit) and the only reason i still do the bounties, Is to max out some of my weapons. Reason i still want to max all my weapons, is because we raid atleast once a week, And maxed weapons makes things a bit easier, and i want to reach level 30 ofcourse, RNG Gods please be kind this week !!!! The Crucible is nice, but i do not really like pvp all that much, So that is not a reason to keep playing destiny. I did buy the dlc packs allready, but i do not think i can take another two months without anything new. So when Dragon Age is released i will probably play that untill the DLC comes. VoG : I totally agree with bungie patching the sniper platforms, for the Templar encounter, this was clearly not intended. I would not call it a bug though. : The Random Teleport "fix" at Atheon, is not a good thing. I really like the idea of everyone having their own role in the raid. And building a strategy around this. We run the raid with a fixed group of 4 people, and we always take two randoms. We do not care if people have cleared the VoG before, as we will talk them through things. What does happen alot, is that randoms tend to leave the game if we do not 1 shot Atheon. We then spend alot of time looking for replacements, with the new patch i am afraid this will get alot worse, so we will probably only take people that know exactly what to do, So that we will be able to clear VoG without much problems. I think bungie will patch the encounter, so that three randoms get teleported, But i feel there might be something else behind this patch as well. Maybe bungie was not able to fix the bug, that only two people get teleported. and the "easy" way to solve this, was teleporting three randoms, i think that is way easier to code. The last thing i want to say about this, and maybe the most important, is that bungie has said the reason they are patching this is because, this should be the high point of the raid, the epic conclusion, and everyone should be able to do everything atheon throws at you. Well getting three shards everytime you defeat Atheon is NOT very epic, so this is a complete paradox ! If they want the fight to be more epic, make the reward epic as well ! RNG : This is rather funny, we have one friend in our group that always seems to get all the exotics and legendary's If we do a nightfall, he gets the exotic gun or armor. When we farm chests for materials, he gets the exotic gun from the chest. When we turn in our blue engrams, he most of the time gets the legendary's. Last raid we all got shards, but he got the raid armor and exotic rocket launcher from a chest. RNG is RNG, but did want to share as this can get a bit annoying.

if you want quantifiable opinions, you would need to have a growing/ evolving survey. one that that acknowledges legitimate complaints. rate likes/ dislikes on a scale.
