I really like this theory! Thanks for sharing.
It would be interesting if it was Rasputin from the future reaching rampancy (if he survived the darkness in the other timelines) and created the Vex to convert Venus. AI going from saving humanity to erecting its own army to attempt to become the dominant/controlling force throughout time with the end goal of becoming more powerful than the Darkness at any one point as a means of destroying it. Thus, fulfilling its own ego and sense of self preservation.
This inspires more thought.

The thing about AI is that it is effectively immortal if it can remain mentally stable and physically safe. In Marathon, once Durandal gets his freedom (for which he was willing to sacrifice thousands of humans) and his ride (an alien ship), the next thing on his mind is how to escape the closure of the universe...

Would you consider becoming a fundamental law of the universe escaping the closure of the universe (Since the universe isn't ending anytime soon, I will assume closure refers to the finite nature of the universe)? Would this then explain the vault of Glass? I think a simpler, though equal possibility is that Rasputin's expansion is more of a necessity than ambition. With the other warminds supposedly out of commission, Rasputin simply has been assuming the stations that would be controlled by other war minds in their steed. Still, it's scary how well your idea works, it 's disturbing how much sense it makes...

I feel like in a lot of SciFi singularity style plot lines the basic human instinct which is passed on the machines and makes them "aware" is the idea of self preservation. I could completely see that taking persistence over any other objective a self aware AI has. It won't follow protocol of that protocol will lead invariably to its own destruction. Perhaps saving humanity from the Darkness in this case. I know some have pointed out that Rasputin was to protect earth. This might be semantics and what is meant is to protect humanity which resides on earth.
