When doing this week's nightfall, I was using my Ice Breaker after I ran out of ammo on my void sniper against the walker, wishing I had more but unwilling to burn special ammo on it. Suddenly, a lightbulb - what happens if I switch guns after it regenerates ammo? Will I still be at 0, or will the normal ammo penalty apply and leave me with a few shots?
Presto chango- ammo for my Praedyth's Revenge! In fact, given the way the ammo algorithm works, I actually had 10 shots, half of my normal max ammo! This was amazing, and let me breeze through the rest of the strike. As cool as that was... that obviously is an unintended side effect. Unlimited ammo over time for the IB is fine, but not for every special weapon you have. I haven't unlocked my Invective's ammo regen yet, so I don't know if it has the same effect, but it should be looked at as well to make sure it doesn't.
Sorry to be that guy, forums. But you don't really want to be that way do you?
(Also sorry to start this as a related topic, but the app is down and New Topic doesn't work on my phone)
Edit: to be 100% clear, the real problem is it generates more ammo for other guns than it does for itself. This has various side effects and abusable implications, and the solution is as simple as treating the IB ammo as a full clip, not full reserve ammo. Then on switching you would get a half clip.

If Bungie nerfs my Icebreaker (And we all know how much they suck at nerfing things properly or nerfing things that are actually a problem) because you had a conflict of conscience, i will shove a small family of gophers up your ass to the point your 9 generations dead ancestor's skeleton will suddenly develop a furcoat around the entire circumference of their bony ass. PvP players are already helping Bungie screw the PvE players over, we don't need deluded (Your intentions are honorable, but seriously this 'exploit' takes more effort than its worth. Just wait for the recharge and shoot the damn target.) PvE players joining in.

Good point, not a huge deal but I have definitely used this and it seems pretty cheap.
-
Its not an expoilt ... god what is wrong with people on these forums.
-
Nothing wrong with that free ammo is fun and if you wait the game will just give u Ammo it only gives u 12 or 13 shots in the praedyths it not that good

Go find some professional help. I think this change will not change anything about your character in real life.

2 RepliesYou suck
-
3 RepliesNot sure why this was brought up, the ammo loss on swap is dumb for PvE.. Especially with ammo synthesizers on a 5 minute cool down.. Do whatever you want to PvP, but leave us PvE players alone... Not sure if they can re-program just one gun or if they would have to do all guns, so this might have been a mute point... Who knows
-
5 RepliesI bet you reminded the teacher about homework too, didn't you?
-
1 ReplyWho cares man? This is sad.
-
1 ReplyGlad you had the honesty to find this and report it. This is something that should be fixed.
-
The regen is why EVERYONE uses it in strikes and nightfall, there needs to be something to fix the PVE-OPness of Icebreaker.
-
Are you opposed to cracking a hard boiled egg's eggshell with a knife? Cuz you know a knife's intended purpose is to -blam!-ing cut shit right. Things have usefull uses other then what they were designed for. Its not cheating or exploiting, its using your tools to the best in any situation.
-
4 RepliesSeeing as how when you run out of primary and secondary ammo, You get a refill after 30secs. This isn't game breaking. Now maybe if it was giving you infinite Heavy ammo sure.
-
1 ReplyWhen you run completely out of ammo for all weapons you get an ammo regeneration...did you know that? You stand still in a safe area with zero ammo...count to 15 (usually 10 but sometimes longer) and -bam- you've got more ammo for primary and secondary. It's not an exploit to use a different gun to generate the ammo when you can just go stand in a corner for 10 seconds and have ammo regenerated anyway.
-
1 ReplyWhy do you complain about this? I was getting my kills with a fusion rifle, run out of ammo, went back on a corner and change guns, and keep getting kills. It was super usefull. Why do you want it fixed?
-
4 RepliesI used this method to get my fusion kills to unlock the exotic.need 200 kills in nightfall. Its not a glitch. Just the way it is so i use it :o)

1 ReplyListen I disagree with you, but let's agree on one thing first: Not one more nerf or exploit fix until the glaring, serious bugs, issues and glitches are worked out. VM gets clipped, but Atheon still doesn't award loot to many guardians and his weapons piece the shield meant to protect players from him. Pocket Infinity loses five shots but there's still no way to communicate that guys, I want to join your raid. Our that I can't communicate that the entirety of Bravo team is right over here come on. I have to spend 30 seconds fumbling for a synth pack blind because there is no hot button support for anything in the menu. These are serious glaring problems negatively affecting everyone and I've yet to mention the multitude of serious network issues affecting people around the country especially in college dorm rooms. You on the other hand are annoyed at the icebreaker making your game too easy. Prioritize, man.

9 RepliesEdited by Sarogat: 10/16/2014 10:33:05 PMWhat's the difference between this method or just wasting your ammo to get a free refresh? At least IB only provides half ammo for the special slot instead of a top off for everything. #Thinkitthrough

Nice catch!
-
7 RepliesI didn't think that was a bug it's how it's supposed to work. If every time in the raid I changed from invective to praydeth's I had to use a ammo synth I'd be pissed.
-
6 RepliesIt works for any gun in pve when switching to another gun...
-
1 ReplyI'm glad you brought this up. This should be fixed. I won't demand this be fixed right away though. Bungie has a lot of stuff on their plate. This is similar to another exploit to get infinite grenade energy. http://youtu.be/7r1IsRNds50

4 RepliesIsn't that the point of the gun? The ammo regen isn't that fast and certain modifiers can make it useless. Besides 2ndary ammo seems to drop way more often anyway. If you are actually using the gun the whole time with the juggler modifier it is really nice but you will be using your primary most of the time anyway unless you're camping, so its not that useful. In Raids and long term engagements it seems to be really useful though. Ammo regen is the reason why I chose the Invective bounty. Bungie no change!

Nice find, but why do people feel the need to try to be Destiny police and complain about great things like this? I'll be using this, but I wouldn't complain about it? It's not breaking the game

7 RepliesEdited by Cain Zendew: 10/16/2014 10:51:38 PMThe algorithm is working the way it was intended to. In the coarse of battle say I decide I need to switch my sniper to a shotgun and get close and personal with my enemies, what happens? They dock you 50% of your ammo as a penalty as a way of reflecting that maybe that gun you changed to didn't have as much ammo reserved do to the fact that you can only carry so much: It's already a lazy way of keeping track of ammo types in my opinion. By than introducing a sniper riffle that doesn't take ammo and regenerates over time, your going to have that lazy way of keeping track of ammo become very obviously reflected in the games mechanics. So than are we just so posed to than change the code to make it to where switching from Ice Breaker to another weapon has no ammo in the clip or barrel? That doesn't sound fair either: If the system was put in place as a time saver to not have to track all types of different ammunition types, who's to say my guardian didn't leave the tower with a few extra clips for my shot gun, after all, the Ice breaker doesn't require extra space on my guardian's person for sniper ammo. Following that same line of logic, that means I'd have more space for other types of ammo for my other guns. You see what I'm getting at here? Nerfing away the algorithm is not the answer: It will only insure me choosing a different sniper riffle from the start so when changing to a different special weapon I will know I'll have some ammo for it. As it stands, the Ice Breaker is already a pretty mediocre sniper riffle for an exotic apart from ammo regeneration. Honestly I don't know why so many people pick up on things like this and than feel like it's such a big problem as to tell everyone and demand a fix without putting any thought into how it should be fixed. I'm so tired of knee jerk reactions when it comes to patching things: Bungie and the people calling for them need to put some thought into what they are asking instead of saying "Fix this". How about putting foreword an idea that fixes the problem and doesn't penalize people who decide not to use this "so-posed Exploit"? If Bungie than decides to Nerf it to where I get no ammo form switching from my Ice breaker to say my Plan C, I can tell you which exotic I will not be using(Ice Breaker) Don't get me wrong, I can see your point: but threads like these do little to help the community at large when no logical solution is given, let alone any solution other than wreaking some other aspect of the game. Lots of times we end up with a less fun game with another broken aspect because the developer see's this and decides to nurf without thought: This just happened to people's Pocket infinity and Vex Mithoclast when they balanced them for PVP, and forgot that no one was asking for them to be nurfd in PVE. So I ask you, what is your solution? make it clear, and don't think you don't need to state one, because you do. You brought this to bungie's doorstep when many were content to let it be in fear of more unfair nerfs. So lets here it, you brought up a valid point of an unintended consequence of using the thing, so what is your solution?

I saw this during night fall as well, and am kinda annoyed you think this is a negative. It's already irritating, to have full special ammo, and lose it when you swap weapon types, although I get why it's done that way, it's still annoying. In the crucible, you lose all your special ammo after swapping a special weapon anyway. So no issue there. Also, if you just deplete your all your ammo in PvE, you'll just receive more anyway.
