Both are earns. Here is why. Exotics are gold. There are two ways to get gold. 1- Buy it at the store. (This would be Xur) 2- Go to a mine, or river, work that area, and hope you get lucky and finds some. (Farming/grinding) Both ways are earning it by putting in work. One way is by physically getting it yourself, and the other way is working for money to buy it. Can we please drop at least this one argument, and argue about something important? Like how pie is greatly superior to cake.
