I recently received the Vex Mythoclast from hard Aetheon. Now I could get into how the gun handles, or if it should or shouldn't be in pvp, but I'm gonna tackle something I think is far more cool.
The name.
When I first got it I had no idea what "Mythoclast" meant or if it was even a word. However, a few minutes ago I became bored here at work and looked up the definition of the word. The definition is: Destroyer of Myths.
At first I thought, "It's a cool definition, but it doesn't seem to pertain to anything... just like the rest of Destiny's story." So I put my phone away and not 10 seconds later, revelation struck.
Goblin, Hobgoblin, Minotaur, Harpy, Hydra, and all of the rest of the Vex names; they all pertain to Greek mythology. So the definition in this instance could be read "Destroyer of Vex".
I'm sure a lot you already figured this out, but I just thought that this was amazing wordplay.
Edit: I see a lot of people trying to derail the thread about how broken the gun is. I'm going to explain in full detail what is wrong with the Vex Mythoclast and exactly how they are going to fix it in the spoiler.
A regular fusion rifle fires off seven shots at once with every charge. Most fusion rifles have 3-5 rounds in a mag, or 21-35 hits. If you unlock the perk, Enhanced Battery, it ups your mag to 8 rounds (56 hits) no matter the fusion rifle... even the Vex Mythoclast (starts out with 21 rounds, equivalent of 3 charges, and after Enhanced Battery gets 56 rounds, the equivalent of 8 charges).
What separates the Vex Mythoclast from the other fusion rifles is its special ability, Timeless Mythoclast
This weapon has no charge time. It fires a single bolt with each trigger pull.
Once you read that it sounds like a fusion rifle that handles more like a scout rifle... however it's broken right now because it's not working like a scout rifle, it's acting like a full auto rifle.
Before you say that the fire rate isn't the issue, that it's the damage, then I have news for you. You don't have a problem with the Vex Mythoclast, you have a problem with fusion rifles in general. If you fire a fully upgraded Vex Mythoclast seven times at a boss, you'll notice that a fully upgraded fusion rifle (legendary or exotic) will do the same damage off of one charge.
Don't get me wrong I've always thought fusion rifles were overpowered, ever since I got a Plan C.
In conclusion, the Vex is broken because of the full auto feature, and the damage fusion rifles are doing is up for debate.
It's a shame they nerfed the damage of the Mythoclast by 35%...

4 RepliesLast word will outgun MYTHOCLAST just saying

1 ReplySorry, I know this is an old thread but if you look up the meaning of vex it is annoying. So the vex mythoclast is the "annoying destroyer of myths." =)

1 ReplyCan we talk about how the Cabal are similar in nature to Roman Gladiators? 1. Legionary: Military unit of the roman army 2. Phalanx: A little confused and unaware of this one but google tells me it's some sort of large formation, and google images shows that weird arrow shield maneuver to block arrows raining from above 3. Centurion: Hopefully self explanatory 4. Colossus: One big mean mudda that's probably Roman? 5. Psion: Weird psychic shit Also: The Hive are essentially religous crusaders, their religion is Oryx, and they are spreading it by any means necessary (Especially long raids with fireteams of people you don't like) 1. I'm too lazy to do list just do your own research for this one.

11 RepliesRead the description. That's why 'one trigger pull' turns into full auto.

6 RepliesOn your edit: The Fusion Rifles are balanced by being Special Weapon (therefore requiring more rare ammo for use in PvP & PvE). They are further balanced by the need to charge before you fire. You are vulnerable between shots, and while charging, and at range. The Vex Mythoclast has the damage (strength) of a Fusion Rifle, without any of the weaknesses. If I come across a team of Vex users in Iron Banner, and no one on my team has such weapons, it is time to just leave that match.

3 RepliesI believe I have found Rasputin. Yes I do glitches. Only for the fact that I'm looking for lore. I'm currently compiling a video on the house of wolves. I got into bunker RAS-2. I'm sure I've found Raputin. The mechanism that's locked away behind closed doors. The warmind. The AI. The machine... Is Rasputin.

5 RepliesThe answer to beating this weapon in pvp is easy. Two days ago I played an entire team of lvl 30's that all had it. My whole team except for me went .3 KD or lower (I was only at 1.3). 1) make a hunter and use blade dancer 2) use the skill that allows you to scope weapons faster 3) use a sniper with a low mag scope 4) quick scope the shit out of them before they can get a shot off 5) pray that it hits their head before you are mythoblasted see.... easy peezy

it's hidden lore like this that keeps me interested. the game is still shrouded in mystery, and i can only hope this was done on purpose
-
Seems simple to me, this's merely my opinion. In the grimore, it says that it's purpose is unknown, but will reveal itself in time. To me, adding the name meaning destroyer of myths, means it's for a future raid, or DLC where enemies and/or bosses will be more susceptible to solar damage. Just a thought, hopefully it's right, because that'd be pretty cool.

6 RepliesThey're nerfing it's range and giving it 35% damage reduction
-
44 RepliesSo its first word is Vex, meaning that it has to do with the Vex. It's second is Mythoclast, meaning it destroys myths. And the Vex enemy types all have "mythical" names. So basically it's supposed to be a Vex Killer SO WHY THE FAWK DOES IT DO SOLAR DAMAGE?
-
Couldn't Mythoclast mean "Legend Killer"? I mean myths and legends are often used interchangeably (though there is a distinction between the two) and a slang term for "destroyer" can be "killer". If this is true then it would make more sense to me since it was a Vex gun and not a Guardian gun originally. The game wants you to "Become Legend". Hence, lore-wise it may be proper to call high level Guardians "legends". Thus, the Mythoclast was designed to kill these "legends". (Note: I have only passing knowledge of this gun as I have yet to do the raid. Sorry if there is already a post stating this. It was just a notion that popped into my mind when reading the OPs post.)

2 RepliesI can't help but love this gun. Not because I have it, but because of the controversy following it. I have been on the receiving end of it, and never the delivering end, but I don't care. It is a gun dropped off the last boss on a hard mode raid. The person wielding it had to bust their ass gearing up through normals, tackling AND clearing hard modes, and then fighting RNJesus to get it. It is powerful because it SHOULD be powerful. I understand in PVE it feeling a bit weak, because it is a primary and should be on par with other primaries, but it should be something worth showing off. Now, people can argue that getting this gun is trivialized by using mechanics to cheese a fight (knocking Aetheon off, using the platform on Templar), and for the most part that is true, but you have to give credit where it's due. How many here soloed the nightfall without hiding either at the drop down area or under the platform? Isn't that essentially cheesing a boss? Fact of the matter is, it is hard to get, therefor it should be strong. I say this being an MMO player for over a decade. TL;DR - Gun should be strong because it's harder to get.
-
15 RepliesIt means nothing now. It's just a common weapon that everyone has.
-
11 RepliesIt's not actually for killing Vex though. Solar = Wizards Wizards = Next Raid Think about it, it's a HIV killer, not Vex.
-
Maybe the gun was thought to be a myth. Maybe when you acquire the weapon, you destroy the myth.
-
Edited by shadowdra: 10/13/2014 7:06:31 PMMy thoughts on the Naming, Vex Mythoclast, Mythoclast->destroyer of Myth->destroyer of Legends ->destoryer of Guardians Vex- since you get it from the vex. therefore this was the Vex's ultimate weapon for defeating Guardians. That is why it does Solar Dmg and is so strong.

10 RepliesI haven't played Destiny at all this weekend but I can tell that I'm already tired of mid 20 level players using ice breaker
-
2 RepliesMythoclast, loosely translated, is vex for "Butthurt Thrower".
-
That's why they chose the name Vex Mythoclast.
-
3 RepliesEdited by Jonah_Flex: 10/13/2014 5:55:33 PMThere isn't anything wrong with the mythoclast. There's something wrong with the people that can't get it. I bet if Xur sold it no one would bitch and complain about it.
-
10 RepliesI dont see a problem with the gun personally. It can be outkilled in PvP if you aren't a turbo CoD player / dumb. People just love to complain because its not easily within their grasp. "Waaah I dont have it, nerf it!" Well, man up and go get it puss pants. Seriously, regardless of all the ninny ways of killing Atheon, its still not guarenteed, its Exotic, and its only available on Hard mode. Get over yourself that you die to it. I did. And if not, well, you need a hell of a lot of peanut butter to go with all that jelly.

The gun is still out performed by normal fusion rifles i've seen countless battles where it went against them and lost due to instant death from chest shot

Quality thread OP. Have an Epic rock song
