I am pretty positive that his name is pronounced "sure"
(grammar n@zis back me up)
when X precedes the letter I or U it makes a SH sound
when it precedes Y it makes a Z sound
only when it follows a vowel in the english language does it make the KS sound
so Xur Agent of the Nine is a "sure thing" when it comes to exotics...
makes perfect sense now doesnt it you cry baby earners
EDIT: I am glad to see the intelligent discussion (some users) and input from different regions and dialects
This is what we should be arguing about on the forums...not dick measuring over who got what and how

Edited by Doc SoCal: 10/12/2014 4:59:14 PMXur is a marketing term he invented, it means "Bringing of Joy and Bitterness" in some off world tongue. Kinda brilliant as it has an automatic cover yer arse meaning... but I digress... I just call him Mr. X. I used to call him Smokey since he was the Smoke Monster in Lost before he became an interstellar arms dealer in his retirement. One day we were drinking some... I have no idea what... over at the Mos Eisley Cantina and he put his hand on my shoulder and said: "Doc... can you not call me that please? I am afraid of bears and I don't sell weed and that's all I think of when you call me that." We had a laugh, did a bunch of Friday quotes and told everyone in the cantina "Only You!" So now I just call him Mr. X since I knew him back when his name was Xsavior. Only his Mom calls him that now. He said it was cool if I told you all this, so don't worry about calling him Mr. X. He will smile... not like anyone could tell.

1 ReplyUltimately, it doesn't matter to me one bit. I let people call him as they will. Why? All words are guttural sounds we created to identify things, including ourselves. Debating how they are used is folly and ridiculous.

Edited by SC Lawsonhawk: 10/13/2014 3:44:32 PMXemnas= Zemnas Xehanort= Zayhanort so I'm assuming Xur= Zur also the postmaster says "Zur"
-
1 ReplyPostmaster says "Message from/for Xur...who or what is Xur?" And that lovable robot of lost engrams uses a "Z" sound.
-
1 ReplyWell the postmaster often says "message for Zur... What's a Zur?"
-
It's Xûr, not Xur, i.e. it's not anglo saxon, i.e. it isn't a typical english pronounciation.
-
Or we can just call him The Agent and not worry how to pronounce the name.
-
get a girlfriend
-
I'm pretty xur that's not how it's pronounced. How xur are you about this? The only xur bet is to ask Deej (pronounced Du Edge) and maybe we'll get the answer in next week's mail bag. XD
-
For those that post about people's pronuciation for a character's name in a video game... I am pretty positive that his name is spelled "Xûr"
-
Xur told me that it's fine if I call him "Zur" so I'm going to stick with that
-
1 ReplyThe xiphoid process (pronounced with a "Z" sound) is that little nub at the bottom of your sternum. Sorry, but your base argument here isn't correct. Perhaps if we were speakign Cantonese, then our pronounciation would be wrong. However, this game was made by English speakers, and X at the start of a word in ENglish is overwhelmingly pronounced as a Z, regardless of the following vowel.

Agent of decline?

It's however you want it to sound. I just call him squid face.

Edited by wearemany: 10/12/2014 4:38:59 PMAs far as I know, x at the beginning of a word is always pronounced with a z sound, like xylophone and Xerox. There are probably exceptions, but I believe that's the standard.
-
you made a whole post for that, wow, god have mercy.
-
Why is this important? Like really?
-
Edited by Kuromugi: 10/12/2014 3:24:57 PMThe post master even sais as some points: "Message for Zur, what is a Zur?" Pronounced as spelled, maybe they butchered their lines, who knows.

This reminds me of the whole Charles Xavier dilemma. Some people pronounce his name ZAY-vee-er and others pronounce it eck-ZAY-vee-er. Personally, I pronounce it eck-ZAY-vee-er, and I'm from the UK. That being said, the X in this case is followed by a û, and in most cases, excluding some French words, a û is pronounced as a u on its own, as you would pronounce it with a word such as Duke. As strange as it might sound, Xûr could quite possibly be pronounced ecks-YOO-ar, as though you're simply saying X, U, R.
-
You forgot to show that when X precedes an E is makes a Z sound. Xena
-
4 RepliesNah. A copier made by Xerox. "Zerox", not "Sherox". So Xûr = Zuur (and not Zur, the û is pronounced as uu). You're welcome.
-
4 RepliesWhat if Bungie just completely threw out all rules of how the X sounds and it's actually pronounced "Exur"?
