Holy Crap! CPL Jared Foster survives 50 cal through the stomach!

Taken from this thread after I heard about it on my local news.
On March 24, 2005, he was working in Baghdad. He'd just come off what they call "fire watch", or night patrol, and was about to lay down on a cot, inside a tent, to take a nap, when he heard something go off. He thought it was a grenade. "I saw smoke," he remembers. "Then I looked down because I felt something really cold, and when I lifted my hand up, it had blood all over it." He also remembers yelling and trying to stand up, but his body wouldn't let him. Within two minutes, the young Marine was unconscious. A 50-caliber rifle, sitting about five feet behind Foster, had discharged. The bullet went in through his back and out through his stomach. "I think they found the bullet about a mile and a half down the road in a dirt berm," Foster says. "They'll go the distance, 50-cals hold a lot of punch." Foster hasn't heard of any other person in the world surviving a 50-cal round. He says the Iraqis are terrified of them and that the bullets are actually meant more for heavy artillery, like armored vehicles or tanks.
That is crazy, read the rest of the article for more info. Discuss

 • Wow. He probably survived because he was so close to the gun when it went off. Instead of blowing him in two pieces it just riped a hole in him like a shotgun. He's pretty lucky though. S3N

 •
Posted by: lepsis3942 nu-uh, impossible, it was my impression that they explode when they hit their target to get through layers of armor plating
Well, your impression is retarded at best and a fig nuton at worst. .50 cals have multiple load types, and yes zinc-oxide fill is one of them (used in heavy artillery and tank busting) most of what our boys use in the field are just full metal jackets. Perfect long range, high accuracy, and heavy impact.

 • Well, to be realistic, most things hit by 50 cal bullets are at least 50 feet away. He was at 6 feet. Who's not to say the bullet was not at full potential velocity? Anyways, he's still tough and lucky. A very good combination.

 •
Posted by: The Business 117 In regards to whoever up there thought it would tear him in half.. The thing said it was fired from five feet away. Not exactly positive, But I think the bullet Stretches as it travels. So the wound it gave him wouldn't be as fatal if he were to be hit from a couple hundred yards away. I could be terriblly off though. Don't quote me on this.
To late, Mr. I know everything about ballistics

 •
Posted by: Poopybub No. Way. That's impossible, it has to be. If that is true, then that is one tough corporal. I guess that just proves that Marines are invincible. I'm assuming that this was friendly fire as well.
The gun discharged moron..... Anyways that is pretty amazing I would promote him for being more badass than Chuck Norris and Jackie Chan combined! The idiot shouldn't of had the gun facing the way it was though >.> [Edited on 03.02.2008 10:54 PM PST]

 • Injuries:
But he's not ok. He's lost count of how many surgeries he's endured, but guesses the number to be 45 or higher, and his list of injuries is so long he doesn't remember all of them. He lost his tailbone completely, damaged his large and small intestines, and suffered a collapsed lung. "It took a big section of my midsection out," Foster says, but somehow it missed his spine.
Lasting damage:
He is walking now but he still has problems doing so and he has pain in his back and legs. "I still have nerve spasms," he says, "I get fatigued very easily." The lack of tissue, from the numerous grafts, moving skin from other parts of his body to fill the gap in his back, puts a strain on him, but Foster says he gets through it.
