I don't even know why they bring up their gender. Well, honestly, I know why. Because they want ATTENTION. That's what bothers me. I don't like attention seeking people. When I'm playing, I like to play. When I'm on the forums, I like to discuss THE GAME, not if I think that it's cool for some random girl to be playing a game.

  • I don't think you were intentionally getting at the 'lets just ignore this, this should be a place for me to ignore things' angle. Sounded a bit like it, though. Look. Female gamers are part of the game community. They play the game. This is an issue that part of the community faces. We as the community playing the game are part of the experience of the game. So that issue is part of talking about the game. As a male, yes you can bury your head in the sand and ignore it. Most do. Some don't. So we talk about it. It's not your problem, no. You're probably more concerned about SUROS or Mythoclast. But we have portions of the gaming community who can't even comfortably play to be pissed off by the exotics, because of a hostile environment. And that is a problem. So I'm going to talk about it.

They're a part of the game community. They're gamers. I don't care what they have between their legs. They shouldn't be addressed as if they were different from everyone. And I'm not concerned about trivial rants like Suros or Mythoclast. I come here for the few helpful tips and to provide support or advice if I can to new players. That's being a part of a community.

  • Part of being a community is acknowledging issues among said community. This is definitely one that we know to be an issue with gaming at large. So it will be addressed, until it isn't a problem anymore. Then it won't. You play your part, which sounds genuinely helpful btw. But that doesn't justify a 'lets all pretend the problems aren't there' mentality. Not everyone will even look at or join in this conversations. Not everyone will start them. Not everyone has to. But a community that collectively agrees to ignore the problems of part of said community just isn't very healthy.

  • Then we should address the issue as a whole, and not a tiny aspect of it. What about everyone calling names on everyone? How can we address that? That's the way online gaming has been since the beginning. I'm not approving of this, but that's the way it is. I don't believe that anyone can harass a female in this game, based on the fact that you can only speak with people on your fireteam (I assume your friends). On the forums, avoiding that kind of situation is just as easy as avoid telling people on every thread that you're a female. It's not necessary at all to state your gender, your opinion is what matters.

  • I have spoken out here about the homosexual thing, and the race thing. In different posts. For some reason, this one about women has gotten by far the most traffic. Which leads me to believe the shoe fits a lot more feet, yadig? The overall issue, yes, is the ignorant gamer seeing the internet as a safe haven to be an asshat with no consequences. Trying to address it on a high level just... doesn't...seem to get to people. So I'm taking it on in parts. Perfect? Not at all. I'm just one dude with some opinions. But it's something. It's bad the way it is, so I'm doing something. It's something.

  • What I don't really get is how do people find out that someone is gay IRL? Same with race...

  • They don't. But they throw around slurs, they throw around '-blam!-' and anyone who IS of that race or IS gay has to hear so many people speak ill of them blindly. It's not hearing it just once that does it. It's again, and again, and again, and again. It wears on people. And it is hostility that those who do it never need to encounter. They cannot understand what it would be like to have constant assurance that something which is part of their identity is being constantly devalued. They just don't get it. They can't understand. Zero empathy. So no, it doesn't matter if they know IRL if this person is or not. That doesn't mean there is no harm done.
