Unless you spend hours a day farming legendaries and exotics. Of course the gear isn't better than the level 30 gear you already have. Why would it be? Bungie wouldn't make a php event that gives you stuff better than end game gear. My guess is that the idea behind the events is an alternative way for players to get decent gear without having to depend on RNG. It's not designed for the players who maxed out their game in a month. So if you're the one complaining about iron banner being pointless or useless, it's because you ruined it for yourself.
