Does anyone know how enemy resistances work (on shields)?

I was playing a Nightfall mission last night and the white shields that enemies had always seemed to show "resist" when we hit them with PRIMARY weapons. Does this mean that our attack stat wasn't high enough to do significant damage? If the shield came down, such as after being hit with my Arc Grenade, then we would get better damage. Is the best strategy simply to have everyone concentrate on one Ultra at a time, in order to strip the shields (the way you would do in a "kill the target" public event)?

  • Fight fire with fire, literally. Fight void with void, and arc with arc. Basically try and have a sniper or heavy weapon with one of the primary elements to counter elemental shields on enemies.

The way shields wish is: Use the same dmg that goes with shield color Blue=arc Red/orange = solar Purple= void If you use the wrong element or kinetic dmg you do 50% less dmg (resist) If you use correct color you do bonus dmg once shield is gone you do normal dmg again. This effect can be increased with the heroic modifiers that enhance elemental dmg.

  • Yeah this is something unique to Nightfalls. Kinetic resisting shields are a thing. That's why the Raid (available at 26) can give you PRIMARY weapons with elemental damage and Nightfalls are lvl 28. There's progression synergy there from Raid to Nightfall in my opinion.

    • Use colors Orange solar Blue arc Purple void Its pretty easy but you can screw yourself or real high levels using the wrong elements and getting immune.

      • Primary weapons (unless elemental aka raid weapons) will always be resisted. Best strategy for night all is ignore whatever color anyone's shield is and use the element specified in the modifier. If not nightfall, use the same element as the enemies shield. Solar, orange, arc-blue and void-purple. Use a special or heavy weapon of the correct element first to penetrate shield then switch to primary for the kill.

Since none of these comments are actually addressing your question: IN NIGHTFALL USING THE WRONG ELEMENT AGAINST A SHIELD DEALS 50% LESS DAMAGE So no, you don't need to get "a better weapon", you just need to use the right damage type (Kinetic is a Damage type--it is Neutral), which may or may not be what the Burn modifier is that week. That is why you're getting resists. Good day. (People really need to stop ONLY rolling with the Burn modifier element. For example, last week in the Mars strike, Arc Burn was active. But Psions have Void shields and Centurions have Solar shields. Using your buffed Arc damage against either of those shield types will still do very very little damage.)

        • For the nightfall use the buffed effects, solar/void/arc burn, it will remove the shield instantly

          • If your attack rating is not high enough your guns will not do full damage to the target. Hence the resist showing up. Get a legendary and upgrade it.

            • Blue sheilds means use a gun with the "blue buzz saw blade symbol" on it Purple is the "purple vortex symbol" Red is the "fire symbol" Blast through the sheild with one of those and kill him easy.
