So most ppl keep saying Destiny isn't a mmo. I say if this game has raids(that are required to get best gear) then it's a mmo. Just trying to see if I'm the majority or the minority on this issue.
Edit 1: I'm not trying to say destiny is only a mmo. I'm just trying to get ppl to accept that it's all 3 mmo rpg and Fps. Not just Fps

MMO = Massively Multiplayer Online Massively. Fireteam limit is 6. Kek.
-
I wouldnt say it was an official MMO, but its along the lines. Still a great game though.
-
Destiny is so mmo i mean all mmos have max 15 people on screen at once and totally isnt a fps with a social menu in the form of the tower, no way total mmo
-
Edited by hellcat420: 10/6/2014 10:37:49 PMdestiny is a fps rpg. its not big enough to be an mmo, and you cant talk to anyone in the game either, which is another reason its not an mmo imo.

ITT: the definition of MMO and RPG are twisted
-
The planetside's are the only games to claim that honor.
-
Not an MMO at all. 12 ppl does not count as massive sorry.
-
MMO has nothing to do with the kind of content. It's simply Massively Multiplayer Online. People like to argue on the interpretation of that too though...
-
The author must be retarded. What is massive about 16 player lobby? Then EVERY single game is an mmo according to this clown. Thats the main detail that describes mmos. ITS IN THE NAME. MASSIVE!!!!!!!!! jesus christ.

2 RepliesEdited by Kubriks: 10/6/2014 8:43:59 PMMassively multiplayer = A LOT OF PEOPLE =/= 16 people The term massive in MMO does not refer to the size of the game, it is a QUANTIFIER for the term MULTIPLAYER. Borderlands is not an MMO for this same reason. You need a MASSIVE amount of people in the same instance for it to be considered an MMO. If you think 16 is a massive number... I'm not sure how to help you there. Online MMOs have servers that can hold thousands of players at once. For instance, in WoW if all Ally in a server attacked all Horde at their city, you could have THOUSANDS of people fighting in the same area potentially. Destiny caps at 16 in the tower, 12 for patrols and the Crucible. How this is still being questioned, I have no clue at all... Edit: Here's an English lesson for people that still think Destiny is an MMO. The -ly suffix in ''massively'' is what makes it a quantifier for multiplayer. If MMO stood for massive multiplayer online, then yes, Destiny among many other games would be considered an MMO. But it stands for MASSIVELY MULTIPLAYER, therefor you are wrong.

How is Destiny an MMO? -You can only have a max of 16 people in the tower. -The Tower is a very small hub area. -The Tower has no real interaction for players and NPCs -The game has very little interaction between players (no chat of any sort unless you invite randomly). -Only 3 people per fire team even in patrols (unless you are doing a raid or clash / control). So, again, how is Destiny an MMO? If you are just going with a lot of people are playing the game right now, then that would make Call of Duty an MMO.
-
MASSIVE Multiplayer Online. Max people in one area is 16.... its NOT an mmo. Im almost absolutely positive ALL the people that call this an mmo have NEVER played a real mmo in their entire lives. if 16 people in one area counts as mmo then gta 5, halo, call of duty, battlefield, etc are mmos. Because their game lobbys can hold 16 people. Sounds ridiculous right?

Having MMO elements =/= Being an MMO
-
You can call it a mo, just not a mmo
-
2 RepliesIt's an MMO for sure. One lacking content that I am about to sell lol
-
1 ReplyDestiny is not an MMO. Sure it has MMO qualities like the raids, the instancing, the equipment/gear upgrading, but these things alone do not make an MMO. Borderlands had all of these things (except instancing) but that wasn't an MMO. It's an FPS, that's obvious. It's an RPG, also obvious. It is most definitely not an MMO.
-
2 RepliesIt's a first person shooter with MMO elements. Why is this so hard to understand for people?
-
10 RepliesDestiny takes aspects from different genres like MMO, FPS, and RPG. It's far from being a full fledged MMO.
-
I know the devs never called it an mmo, but how many times have fans applied their own genres to games/music/art they enjoy (or hate). It's whatever we call it. Which is perhaps the heart of the issue. Some people wanted a game like Mass Effect, with lots of story. Some people wanted another Halo, with enough plot to keep us entertained with good multiplayer. Some people wanted COD, with fast rewards and complex multiplayer. We got something else. It's undoubtably a shooter, since we're running around shooting things with guns. It's got some RPG elements, leveling, classes, gear options, etc. it's got some MMO elements, repetitive missions/strikes, grinding for gear/rep/tokens, connection issues and more. So whatever it is, it's not what any one group expected. Some people are taking that better than others. Some people are actually enjoying it. For better or worse, Destiny is Destiny. I hope it gets better with time. I'll be around for about a month or two after each xpac and pop in for events. Unless they give me more (and interesting stuff to do - that I'll pay for) it'll be something to do between life and other games.

Edited by Shadow: 10/6/2014 4:43:01 PMLet's just say destiny doesn't know what it wants to be while it has aspects in all 3 it also fails in all 3 categories trying to somehow find a balance between the 3 naming itself a shared world shooter which is ridiculous SWS is a watered down version of a mmofps with less people. A matchmaking game with h no matchmaking LOL, a RPG with little to no customizations to both weapons and gear, MMO aspects but is seriously lacking in both population and content, Social game lacking any social features but waving and dancing, only thing it has right is the fps part but coming from the creators of halo this is to be expected of the fps gods lol. I say bungie has no idea how to do anything but fps so its gonna take time for them to learn I say they listen to the community its their best option.
-
5 RepliesWhy are you people still arguing this? The makers of the game never called it a -blam!-ing MMO so it's not a -blam!-ing MMO. Blizzard calls WoW an MMO. It's a shared world FPS now stop trying to make irrelevant points about it being MMO, it's not. I don't care how many aspects of one it has or doesn't have, the devs don't call it an MMO = not a -blam!-ing MMO.
-
It cannot legally be an mmo. The servers aren't dedicated, which is the ONLY requirement to be an mmo. Bungie said it's not an mmo, because if they did, they would be sued six ways to Sunday. It probably wouldn't even have been released if they made that claim, because bungie wouldn't be that stupid.
-
Edited by sergeantawesome: 10/6/2014 8:27:11 PMIt doesn't have enough MMO or RPG qualities to really be considered either of those. I have child's wagon with 4 wheels on it, but should I call that a car?
-
3 RepliesWell, 16 players in the tower is not what id call massive. Multiplayer? Well if u have friend that play or u join a clan yes. Online? Well its online but where are communication functions hidden?
-
I'm not even going to vote. I'm simply going to tell you what Bungie has told the world several times. Destiny is a Shared World Shooter. At least that is how bungie describes it.
