After playing the game for quite a while now, I have to say the above is absolutely true. Not only because Bungie defines the Hunter class as the Damage Dealer for BOTH subclasses (Alongside the Warlocks void class, versus the Support heavy Solar class) but because our agility and speed and invisibility techniques when running Bladedancer all go towards keeping us alive and helping us maneuver (preferably behind our target for the massive critical strike damage) so that we can dish out even more damage. My perks in that class all go towards armor and survivability, no matter how you divide out the perks, though, your job remains the same as a Bladedancer: Damage. We have absolutely no abilities that support other members directly like Solar Warlock and Bubble Titans. Gunslinger we shoot things in the face, Bladedancer we knife them in the back, go invisible so that we can escape close quarters, drop a grenade on them, rinse and repeat.
It's our way of supporting our team indirectly because if you gave us all the same weapons, our skill tree allows us more damage output than all the other classes. It's how bungie designed Hunters to be. I'm trying to find the page that said as much that we saw during the beta but can't seem to locate it anymore -_-
