Phogoth encounter is just terrible.. Any advice?

We've tried this two different times. I play with my brother, we're both good to slightly above average players in PvE content, I would say. We have great teamwork and anticipate each other's actions very well, as expected after some 25 years of gaming together. We tried once, at level on normal difficulty. Actually we were all 2 levels above or so. After like 15 attempts we gave up.. We tried it again today, we're level 22 and 21 and have been for days of heavy playing as nothing ever drops with light on it. Did set it for lvl 20 hard. Did better, but never get the boss below 20%. My bro is a Warlock. Not sure what spec he runs most of the time. But it is usally the one that increases grenade cooldown super. I'm a Defender Titan. The number 3 guys just join in and drop over and over, usually giving up after 3-4 attempts. Despite the extra firepower, the 3rd guy often makes it worse, by being idiots and releasing the boss almost immediately or just not really carrying their weight. We've done better on the rare times it's just the 2 of us before a 3rd person joins. The problem is, this boss, and in fact many, just have obscenely stupid amounts of health and each weak spot shot does like 0.04% of the lifebar. Weak spot rocket attacks barely even visibly move his health bar. But the boss isn't even the problem. It's the again obscenely stupid number of reinforcements that come along. We just get attritioned to death over and over until we get unlucky and the last Guardian goes down. The sheer length of the fight makes that more likely as time goes. We fight so many waves, and get to a point where there seems to be like 40 enemies attacking at once, Wizards flying around, Knights than 2 shot stab you, or Knights that bombard you with artillery from across the map while you're being swarmed by 12 other badguys. Enemies spawn from literally ALL 4 directions around you. Can't count the number of times I've been instantly killed by a swarm that came up behind me, that I can't hear because all I hear is a constant loud repeating ROOOOAAAAAAAAAARRRRR!!!!! from the boss who literally won't shut his damn noise hole for more than a second.. Easy to get swarmed when there is so much chaos going on for so long. Usually I have a sword knight kill me while I am jetting away, by him slicing where I was about a second and a half ago, despite not having any perceptible lag. All this is not helped that upon reaching level 20, enemy ammo drops seem to have dropped by at least 70%. Even with most shots counting, and indeed, a lot of precision hits, I run out of ammo all the time with my blue hand cannon that gives ammo on kills. There are even some times where I have zero ammo with all weapons and have to run around trying to beat stuff to death with my hands, hoping for an ammo drop. The number of adds, the bosses ludicrous amounts of health, and the seeming lack of enough damage from my weapon just make me despise everything about this fight. I quit playing for the day because I got so sick of taking getting kicked in the balls over and over after 20 minutes of fighting the boss only to die and have yet another new 3rd player come in, just after we got the last guy to stop messing with the boss right away and the cycle repeats I wanted to play more but it's so damn depressing to have to start all over after such a long fight, over and over. All so we can do a bounty and get some loot that probably won't even be worth the time and trouble. Outside of this boss, and some other boss, dunno who he was, crawls out of a pod.. We've generally done quite well and steamroll mission bosses and did just fine against several other strike bosses.. These encounters just seem imbalanced and overly difficult. First question, other than obvious things like "get better" or "get better gear" does anyone have anything to share about how to make that fight easier? Second question: I feel like I need better than a blue weapon, but after getting some 40-50 blue weapon drops, nothing has yet been any better than what I already have, I have just one purple weapon, a chest piece (that my class could use, another lame feature suddenly getting crap for other classes after spending the entire game only getting what you could use) But I don't have remotely enough of the rare materials upgrade it even one time. The guns seem excellent for everything but bosses. We've been running strikes, most successfully. We've done a lot of public events, but we're barely moving up vanguard marks despite all the effort and time spent. What is a good way to get a better weapon? Light gear? Or is it all either luck or vast amounts of grinding?

  • Let me give you a bit of advice from someone who has beaten Phogoth many times without anyone on the team actually dying. I play Titan, and I usually play as a Defender during this time. I will normally have it on "Blessing of Light", so we are fully protected inside of the shield but can have a extra shield once we leave it. You will always want to select it so that you can reduce the cool down time of Ward of Dawn and also that the duration of it lasts longer. Use Magnetic Grenades. Also, make sure force barrier recharges. As a Warlock, your brother will need to run the "Sunsinger" class, if you keep dying, make sure he has the thing on where he can instantly respawn himself if you both die, that way he can get you. He wants to save his solar grenades and stuff for wizards. Here's a quick tip for the minions. The shield color of the enemies dictates which weapon damage will take it down fastest so you do not get "Resist" when you shoot them (Red = Solar Damage, Blue = Arc Damage, Purple = Void Damage). Taking down wizards with Solar Shotguns or Sniper Rifles really makes things easy when dealing with them. You are going to need good communication and a reliable third, but you are also going to have to make sure you have plenty of Sniper Ammo and primary ammo to dump into Phogoth. DO NOT WORRY about enemies on top, just the bottom, and run if you really need to. Save your HEAVY WEAPON ammunication for when Phogoth barely has any health left, or when you are being SWARMED by minions. Also, having Heavy Weapon Synthesis if you run heavy machine gun will help as well.

    • this is the easiest boss ever, just stay in the entrance room the whole time, when the shrieker spawns just run back to the room behind the room where the shrieker spawns he despawns after about 30 seconds run back up shoot phogoth and when the shrieker spawns again do the same thing, rinse and repeat and its over

    • A few weeks ago there was another thread about this same thing and there were some good tips. I too used to be in your same boat, this fight can be overwhelming at first. What I can tell you is that my 11 year old and my 16 year old love this fight and beat it on a regular basis. ME on the other hand, I like the fight but hate the constant noise from Phogoth. BTW I run a Titan and A Warlock and the tactics work for both. Tactics I use: Once you get to the door run straight through and immediately turn left, on the semi circle platform you will have to deal with 2 thralls sometimes more, kill em quick, and make sure that your right side is blocked by the pillar, or rock just in case your other members have released the beast. Continue moving down the left side killing the acolytes along the way, but do not get caught up in a prolonged fight. Once you get to the back you will see the rocks on your left, you will be tempted to take cover there, and if you have to momentarily to avoid eye beams then do so, nut as soon as you can get out of that corner. Run directly across to the other side, you will probably have to deal with 2 or 3 acolytes along the way, and there are 2 low barrier walls you can crouch by if need be to avoid eye beams, typically I just run straight across to the back right corner of the map, not the area down the stairs, but the area bathed in yellow light. Once there, you will have several areas that you can use to cut off the angle of attack from Phogoth and focus on the adds. More importantly if you watch on the right you will see the Tomb ships come in to drop the adds, this will happen 3 times. Once you see the Tomb ship coming in watch it because it is going to fire 2 purple rounds, and they do a lot of damage, just make sure that Phogoth has no angle on you while you are watching the tomb ship, once the adds drop, start taking them out, Acolytes and Thralls first, you also need to watch the stairs to the right as Thralls will typically approach from that direction. When you are clear of adds, shoot Phogoth in the sweet spot if you can see it, if not pop him with a few rounds until you have the aggro then shoot the sweet spot. If you have a sniper rifle and you should for this fight, you can take out knights at a distance, and you can put some hurt on the boss as well. The reason I do not go to the left, is because this tends to be where the adds stack up, wizards, knights, thralls and accolytes. By being on the right side, there are fewer mobs to deal with in a close proximity, and when you do get aggro from the left, they have to cross the map giving you time to react. Wizards, and Sword Knights are your biggest threat. Don't shoot at wizards from across the map unless their shields are already down, or unless you are clear of all immediate threats and you can be scoped in to deal with them until they are dead. Any weapon with 150 or better will deal with the wizards fairly quickly. Save your magnetic grenades for the sword nights, or any knight in general that is in your proximity, this typically will kill them in 1 shot, sometimes you need to shoot them with a follow up but not often. If you have rockets, unload them on Phogoth, don't worry about the sweet spot just unload all 5 rockets on the main boss as quickly as possible, and then turn your attention to the adds. Once all Wizards are down, clean up the remaining adds, and then focus on the boss. I too also use a hand cannon for my primary, and you will run out of ammo, when you do, look before you leave cover there is typically some primary ammo laying around. My personal favorite loadout is hand cannon and shotgun for my titan, shotguns will tear through wizards and knights if they get up in your grill, or if you get caught reloading the hand cannon, and I often will switch between both Sniper and Shotgun during the fight as there is always enough special ammo laying around. ***Teammates, so if you teammates go down and they are relatively close and they were behind cover you can go and revive them, if they are on the opposite side of the mask, don't worry about reviving, and instead your focus now changes to staying alive for 30 seconds, so stop taking any unnecessary risks which would cause a wipe. If you have your Ward of Dawn use it as needed, when caught out of cover, over whelmed by melee mobs etc. *** Never go up top on the right, as this will spawn more adds, I never leave the ground floor just FYI.

    • The mobs will eventually stop spawning and in the end it's just you and your buddies and the abomination. Don't even worry about hurting him until the mobs stop.

    • Defensive strategy. Do not run n gun for that will get you killed... a lot. Find a good spot (I usually sit around the back left) and just hold off. I have 1 person shoot the wizards and knights while the other 2 concentrate all firepower on Fagoth. You will need someone with the Defender Titan sub class so the shield can protect you. ^^thats my strategy for the weekly strikes For a vanguard Tiger I just hide behind corners and pop out when he's not looking

    • There are a lot of good answers in this thread. I'll add what little I can, much of it reiterative. First - use the rocks on the lower left of the arena (facing in from the door) as a relatively safe spot. Adds will spawn above you at certain points late in the fight; stay out of their top-down LOS and you'll be fine. One player can move out (to the right, back towards the entrance area) and cut the mobs off the top balcony above the rocks I'm discussing, if you need the breathing room. Second - adds spawn in waves in the lowered platform at the rear of the arena (roughly opposite the entry point). They spawn in relatively tight groups and are potential fodder for grenades or AOE supers. If you're worried about ammo, have at least one player move out of the cover area and crush these mobs when they spawn (you'll get a rhythm for when it happens). This should allow you at least some ammo reloads. You can also usually get a decent amount of ammo from crushing the thrall waves with AOE attacks. Third - fire at the boss in rolling order. That is to say one or two players shoot the boss while the other mows mobs (if necessary). Keep the players who are shooting the boss some distance apart. He will split his attention between the two. As long as they use the angled metal walls and rock outcroppings carefully, they can avoid Eye Beam damage. Rotate who shoots at the boss so you keep him switching targets. Fourth - use sticky or linger AOE grenades (examples: Defender Magnetic, Striker Pulse, Voidwalker Vortex, Sunsinger Fusion OR Solar). When able, hit the boss directly with a grenade; it'll do a bit of damage while you reposition to shoot. Fifth - Try not to let the boss get too close. He makes your screen shake to the point that moving and aiming is difficult. Sixth and important - USE SOLAR ON WIZARDS. These guys aren't too annoying if you can keep them in check, but if two or more Wizards are moving around freely, they'll make it much harder for you to use cover to deal with the boss and the rest of the adds. Solar the Wizards to break their shields, then mow them down with headshots. Once their shields break, they're pretty easy kills. Seventh - as another poster stated, try and save your Heavy ammo for the finish. Phogoth becomes a little more aggressive when he gets under a certain percent of health. Just run and toss grenades and/or launch rockets at him. Don't let him get close. I also remember the Strike boss you're talking about who climbs out of a pod; I forget his name, he's some Fallen dude. His adds tend heavily to be Shanks with quick-firing Arc damage, who spawn in numbers and are disposable, but threatening en masse. Use the caves high on the cliff (but be careful of Shanks spawning near and backshooting you) and move away when the boss pursues. This boss is also vulnerable (as are most) to sticky and linger AOE grenades. Move from cover to cover, watch for the boss to do a dash teleport (he goes a fair distance and usually tries to melee at the end of it), and have at least one player thinning the Shanks consistently. Takes patience but not really too much skill, just willingness to put up with bulletsponge BS. Good luck and good hunting!

    • There is a small rock formation in the back left corner. When you enter the area, just run straight along the left wall. The rock on the ground is good cover to run from, lob a grenade, and run back. Behind that rock is a wall formation, but there is a rock that juts out where the boss cannot hit you if you crouch behind it. When he's not firing his laser beam thing, you can either snipe, use a heavy, or otherwise DPS him to oblivion.

My friends and I simply take out all the acolytes and knights and whatnot in the beginning. Stand behind cover left of the door not to far from each and burn him down with everything we have. When we get adds we kill the ones that are running towards us(usually the thralls and acolytes), the knights usually linger behind or slowly make their way under the entrance area. Started doing this around level 16 and it always works flawlessly for us. A good tip is to save your supers for the adds so you can generate more orbs for your team mates when you kill them with it. Don't wonder off far from each other or it'll just be a problem if someone dies and you have to go on a revive run.

Get comfortable with that level. Run around enough, don't try to camp more than short times. You'll learn where you can stand and fire minions without Phogoth firing at you. Whenever you can fire a clip to Phogoth's belly (I fired at his head/mouth for too long without realizing his real weak spot), do it. But Phogoth isn't your main enemy here, it's the other ones. As someone mentioned, solar damage for wizards (or rocket launchers if you really hate those bastards as I do). Fusion rifle or a sniper usually works well with them, at least for me. Learn to save your super for the tough situations. You don't need to fire supers and rockets at Phogoth, he'll die eventually and rockets are more helpful against wizard+knight mobs. The good thing is, you'll start to notice the spawn patterns. Every time Phogoth has lost a certain amount of health, a spawn wave comes in. You'll get familiar with it, you'll know which enemies are coming and where they're coming from. Every time I'm getting mobbed, I start to run around in a circle, near the pillars surrounding Phogoth. Sometimes running through the landing bay or whatever it is (on the opposite side of where you enter the lair) also helps to recover my shields and possibly take out wizards/knights from afar. I'm not a pro myself, I'm actually pretty crappy, and I found that strike hard too at first, but now I can do it on Vanguard Tiger (lvl24) every time. It's not only because I now have better gear, but because I don't "panic" anymore. I know what to expect. I don't panic when Thralls are running at me screaming, or when the screen/controller shakes violently as everything is happening. It's about getting used to it and being comfortable in moving around. You'll do it. And then you'll do it on the harder levels. You'll get there. Then you'll feel glorious.

    • you need to get your faction rep up. start with crucible and vanguard and cap your marks every week. this will give you access to legendary guns and armor. patrol missions, strike playlists, and dailies will give rep. don't rely on engrams for gear

Just use a solar fusion or heavy on the wizard and you'll be fine, also stay on the group floor so you can hide behind the huge wall when creeps spawn so you can take them out without worrying about boss fire, and if possible one of you should camp the very bottom platform to take out all creeps that the ship drops with your super/heavy it'll make the run much easier, hope that helps

    • He can be hard with modifiers if you are doing it solo. Be generally with a strike team you can get through him...at this point the most difficult mission is the one with the Cabal Tank..at lot of bosses...I tried it on hard solo many times with heroic and juggler...I died..Over and over...even with a decent team it was tough. One shot from the cannon. That's all she wrote.

    • The far left hand side has plenty of rocks for cover. I always focus the weak adds, then Knights, and finally the wizards. If you get in trouble just start kiting around the map, and make sure you have an arc weapon for the Knights and solar to take out the wizards.

      • Have people try to take care of any Knights of wizards that are within the area. After that focus on phogoth with someone period ally killing the extras. Take cover behind the rocks and pillars, and sliding is helpful to quickly duck behind the rocks and what not. Hope you can get through it. Also aim for the center crotch-ish area because that's where his weak point is. NOT the head.

      • Phogoth? I think the best strategy is to keep one person and the far back left corner, near the drop off and above the stairs, that's just unloading at the weak spot. Two buddies in the rock formation just in front running interference on the foot soldiers that get too close for comfort. Save the rockets and supers for when Wizards and bad ass Knights come rushing up. That spot is the safest to keep enemies at distance, IMO. Only weakness is when wizards drop in from above, so you have to be ready for that by everyone focusing supers on it. That position made the boss pretty easy. Stay close to revive each other.

Focus on taking out the small fry. Eventually the flood of spawns slows to a trickle and you can all focus on Phogoth in peace. Bring Solar Damage weapons so you can drop the Wizards extra fast. Learn when to fight and when to simply run in order to stay alive. Get your Warlock to equip the ability that lets him use his super to revive himself, and have him hold it in reserve in case everyone goes down - this can save the entire attempt. I've pulled a boss fight back from the brink several times by doing this. EDIT: also, if you want vanguard rep, you need to do bounties. Religiously. As in you do all of them before you do anything else.
