Who or what built them and why are their so many?
Edit: I find it kind of sad that we have to come up with our own theories instead of having a foundation to this game that explains the different races. (I'm not saying I don't like everyone's theories. I find them enjoyable to read)

This is just a theory but the grimore says that the vex are bio-mechanical so that goo in their stomach is really a part of that thing you defeat in The black garden. Which is why the vex have "one mind" they are all being controlled by the same person
-
Hypothesis: They are not robots. They are probably an ancient sentient race that learned to clone and enhance matter mechanically, and thus evolved to a robotic state. /hypothesis

My theory is the vex were microwaves and then megaton turned them into vex.
-
Obviously they built themselves. Seriously though, who made us? God? Then who made him/her? It's all the chicken and the egg. No one ever knows.

Let me throw out a theory. Of course it's all based on fun and imagination XD. It goes off topic too but it's enjoyable.
The Vex could have been a race built before humans even existed. During several missions you here that the Vex can time travel and they are continuously beaming in, so what if the Vex are paradoxal beings. Where once they achieved timetravel they went back and created a paradox where they made the Vex themselves and then went even further to the near beginning of time to protect themselves in such a way that if another race tried to wipe them out they would fail because the Vex would be around before them so they could wipe out the other race. Another thing is that we know there is an enemy called the darkness. So what if the "darkness" was even earlier than the Vex and so advanced that they created a manifestation of themselves through large clusters of particles that they could control any being. Here is where it gets more interesting. What if the "Darkness" then binded to the Vex then they became a type of guardian for the darkness because we do actually know that the gate lord protects the world locked outside of time. So here we go for the "darkness". They were so advanced they could travel through multiple dimensions and alternate realities to the point where time had no reach. Here is where the "darkness" has no end and control the very fabric of the universe. This is where Destiny comes in. What if the Traveler was of Vex origin and a type of gate lord that was binded to the darkness but realised that the "darkness" it's self was beginning to break the foundations of the universe so the "Traveler" fled and ended up in the solar system. Here the power of the traveler acted as a shield that covered the presence of the humans for them to evolve. Once the humans hit their golden age their presence could not be sheltered anymore so the "darkness" came to eradicate but since the Traveler could also a trans-dimensional construct it had embedded itself in the solar system it was formed. The Darkness realised this grave threat and used the Vex to enslave other races during their evolution but it didn't always work. Eventually the darkness homed in of the humans and just before the end the traveler used it's remaining power to anchor itself to earth through soo many dimensions it became permanent. When the Darkness arrived in the solar system the warmind rasputin witnessed the entry point, he reported that the very fabric of space and time ripped causing huge gamma bursts and some planets to be destroyed. the warmind tried to recreate this event but failed because the darkness was acting off emotion, like it was scared. The warmind then issued a recovery protocol to recover Iris and transport it to earth. In the Process the warmind put into effect a few final defence systems one of which used the power of the traveler and in that it shielded a small area beneath the traveler.
5 RepliesMy biggest concern is, if the Vex are all linked and are hyper intelligent AI, is it really a good idea to let your Ghost hack into them?

Not sure but during the missions they say they are created by the black heart. Unless I miss interpreted what I heard. They tried to invade earth before and were stopped by the traveler that's why there are reminants of them around. The black hearts returns those ones to life while porting in New ones.

2 RepliesHumans made them during the Golden Age and they revolted and attacked humans. Remember the traveler made it where we could colonize Mercury Venus and Mars. Also, while in the story the Vex are coming home to the Black Garden on Mars. Just a theory though.

2 RepliesDyson was fed up with trying to find the proper amount of suction so they set their sights on the proper amount of robot labour to make your floors sparkle. The broom sweeping robot in the tower was a prototype. Wanting some extra cleaning power Dyson invented formula 9,999 a mega formula capable of cleaning the germs that clung to germs, they then put it into a robotic spray bottle. The vex were created to handle formula 9,999 and eliminate all bacteria, pathogens and germs. The only problem was vex would clean too well, spraying humans in the face with formula 9,999 would kill them as a side effect to the burning eyeballs.

3 RepliesAncient unknowable black melted marshmallow. AKA the thing in the garden. What I really liked about them though, is somehow they evoke a feeling of being ancient, despite the whole robot thing. They remind me of an ancient culture, but I cannot for the life of me bail it down. Like a combination of meso-American and vaguely Grecian designs.
