Halo 1 and 2 question: How did Sgt. Johnson survive?

How did Sgt. Johnson survive the explosion in Halo 1. If you listen carefully when the Sgt. comes to pick you up before the awards ceremony he says that its "Classified" as to how he survived.... Anybody have any speculation or cold hard facts?

 • if you read the book you would know. In the book htat is a huge part in the plot, i fyou remember when he picks up the helmat in the first book in one of the levels(i dont remember wich) you see sargent Johnsen and his crew get mobbed by the flood. In the book it Master Cheif find a ship with sagent johnsen in it. Cortana figures out htat there was some reason why the flood didnt kill him, something like his body frequency matched whatever and i dont remember. But any way Cortana writes two reports, one will tell everything on how he survived and the humans will have to kill him to study the flood and the other one will like let him live and -blam!- and ya so thats how he survived

 • in the third book, "first strike"...chief almost kills johnson because he cant believe he is alive. Later in the book you find out that johnson has some kind of disorder caused by burns from plasma rifles that changes his blood chemistry or something. The thing that the flood needs to infect someone is what is missing in johnsons blood so even though he got covered in those little bubble flood things, they didnt transform him. After chief learns this, one of the surviving officers on halo wants chief to give military intelligence a data stick that tells them about johnsons condition so they can disect him and innoculate all of earth so they cant be infected by the flood. At the end of the book chief crushes the data chip because he realizes that one man can make a big difference in this war and he is not willing to sacrifice Johnson for dissection just so everyone on earth can be innoculated. He ends up giving them a data stick that has all the info about the flood except the info on why johnson wasnt infected.

 • Yeah but it's kinda funny... I think they meant it as a running joke... cause Imagine he was the arbiter... he's all feelin the Sarges ass (look again..... he cops a feel).... Then Sarge is like "HOW YA DOIN?" like he knows him........ Hahaaa

 • Correct. Also, that Elite in the LEgendary ending of Halo 1 ISN'T the arbiter. That Elite was wearing Blue armour, not Gold...

 • The ending where he's hugging an elite was put in there for fun, it actually has nothing to do with the plot. HOWEVER, in Halo: First Strike, Sargeant Johnson is one of the few humans to survive the battle on Halo Installation 4. He and a few others escape on a Pelican before the ring explodes. The MC suddenly realizes that he saw Sargeant Johnson get attacked by the Flood in the video he retreived from the dead marine's helmet... to which Johnson explains that he has a rare blood disease which made the Flood reject him as a host. So although the ending sequence is unrelated, it WAS surprising that Johsnon made it off Halo since he was attacked by a spore anyways. And that's how he survived. http://stormchasr03.tripod.com/prophet.html

 • I think they knew Johnson was going to be in H2...thats why they showed him and the Arbiter together at the end of Halo1. They never said how the Arbitor got off Halo ether in H2 so it was a hint that they would both be in H2...So this being said, does this mean any extra info obtained at the end of H2 is a hint to H3? Hmmm whats that hint at the end of H2...oh yeah Feb 9th. My guess would be that Gravemind transported them both knowing they would be important tools in the near future. By Johnson saying its classifyed makes me think he may not evan know himself. He may be a bigger part of the picture then we thought. Someone wanted him alive...but for a good reason or a bad one we will have to wait to find out.

 • Actually, i was going to say that he's a ninja. But you can read the books to find out how he's a ninja. Or ya, more accurately a badass. I was thinking, was the original plan to have Johnson be such a main chaacter? or did bungie go in that direction after johnson made such a big impact.

 • This makes me realize how long it's been since I last played Halo: CE. This is actually a case where there is too little knowledge to devise a theory on how he escaped, although, reliance on an alternate ending to convey an element in a sequel is nothing new: Tiberian Dawn had an alternate ending available which helps explain the survival of Kane in Tiberian Sun. The information is classified, whether this is some element to be explored later (is he perhaps an impending betrayer?) or simply a joke on the part of the developers is up to the writers. It also has an additional benefit though: Even if his survival is for the most part insignificant, he does open up the possibility of other survivors without creating the sense of sudden plot additions.

 • Maybe in the Halo legendary ending, the elite he was hugging was Arbiter -- and guilty spark emerges and decides to save them both for some reason (maybe simply because they're foes of the covenant). Or maybe they don't have a reason and just wanted him to live cuz he's a great character.

 • I have often wondered this myself, on various fansites however it is often mentioned that sgt johnson had some sort of neural disease (Borons syndrome) that says that he was immune to the infection of the flood. So he survived the initial outbreak. It also should be said that the legendary movie you get as a reward was really just meant to make you laugh, and although it shows johnson clearly getting blown up it should not really be taken seriously as ' vital plot development' it was just an extra to make you laugh. Besides Johnsons hardcore, no massive planetary explosion can stop him! [Edited on 11/17/2004 1:30:08 AM]

 • I'm guessing... he got picked up at the last few moments by a longsword fighter and hid in the aftermath of the explotion waiting for the Covies to pass by and go into slipspace along with thier ships like Keyes did in Halo 2.. or got teleported by 343 guilty spark I'm only guessing.

 • I think him and the Arbiter dude (who were fondling each other) Snuck off the ring..... LOL that's why he says "HOW YA DOIN" Before he gets bludgeoned unconscious (PS I know this is utter BS)
